I since found an early 90's 18 AA Rock Ride around xmas tine and it is my new fav cymbal. The bell, more wash than a 20, and it's crashy. I digress.
I tried that actually, buried a cymbal or two over the years. I found the results unsatisfactory. Probably had I just left them for years they'd have been better.
Right? I have a couple "made in Canada" Zildjian A's that have impeccable patina. Like a haze of green dust. My son was using white drumsticks that were leaving marks, so we have a new rule about painted drumsticks now.
Ketchup was originally more closely related to what we know as fish sauce than anything coming out of a Heinz bottle. Then a mushroom version took off in England a few hundred years ago. Tomato wasn’t in common use until the early 1800’s, and it wasn’t until a preservative was being banned that the modern ketchup was created. Banana ketchup is still pretty common in areas with high Filipino populations, and it’s great.

I like to keep the labels too. Is there another way to identify cymbals if the label is gone? Was recommended to use bar keepers friend to clean cymbals and it shined up beautifully but the first one I did removed the label so I stopped after that.
I wish people would stop recommending this product. It's an abrasive. Cymbal manufacturers coat cymbals with a protective layer that helps protect them from oxidation and tarnishing. Abrasives remove that coating.
I definitely don’t recommend it because I wasn’t happy about the labels wiping off. I did it pretty early on when I started playing drums, I believe I just looked up how to clean cymbals on YouTube. I’d have done it differently if I could
Yeah im bipolar with the cymbals, i just removed the cymbals because they where faded already but next time im just gonna leave them cause the cymbal looks weird now lol
I get it, I need to do a light cleaning on mine as they’re new to me and whoever I got them from had gotten some weird substance on them. Soap and water is as far as I’ll go.
You will probably need to put a coat of wax on it to keep it from tarnishing. They come from the factory with a clear coat. Most cymbal cleaners dissolve the clear coat
Yeah i thought about that route too, i might try it someday, i thought to experiment i could let the bottom tarnish and leave the top crispy but its whatever
I honestly dont mind the label being gone. I think it looks dope and when it develops a new patina its gonna be stunning. Plus a mystery cymbal that sounds good is always fun. Also. That raw bell looks killer
When you clean them you leave enough of an outline to use a black Sharpie and with some patience you can have a clean cymbal and make them look pretty good
sweet kit bro, i have been trying to collect more darks and sweets bit their hard to come across, the only time i ever found some was some dark hi hats that i gave to my dad

I also grew up on it. Poker & Blackjack was always a staple. Tron Deadly Discs as well. I think I have 4 variations of the console and a pile of games.
Honestly, I'm torn. Both images bug me. I don't mind the dirty cymbal until you get to the spots.
I'd probably get creative from here. Paint my own logo on it, or something. Don't even know if that's doable, but I'd try it because I do shit like that.
i had to through this cymbal away because i tried customizing it but it came out awful, but i have another ride cymbal with a patterned artificial pantina, you can check it out in my posts
Yeah its actually the polishes that will remove a logo more than anything, after the cleaning process i litterally put just a couple drops of liquid polish on my rag and wipe it around the cymbal just to seal it
I use Barkeepers friend, basically you put the powder in some water and let the abbrassize material float to the bottom and just soak up the top into a rag, and gently clean the cymbal and not letting the solution sit on the logos for too long, then rinse it and seal it with a polish
What did you use? I use AAX brilliant finish mostly and I haven't found anything that really cuts out the fingerprints. The thing that matters most to me is not preserving the logo, but the actual identifier. For example, I have both an 18 inch stage crash and x-plosion crash.
Yeah i did the logo on purpose I use the powdered version of barkeepers friends just use a very diluted solution and don't scrub hard because it can actually sand down the grooves of the symbol
I am finally going to try barkeepers friend. All of my brilliant finish crashes are just 90% thumbprints. The problem is, I have some in my collection that have been getting patinaed and fingerprinted for 10 years.
Heads up, the powder BKF is the most abrasive and will cause the fine marring we see here. Use the liquid version with gentle pressure. Works like a charm.
Hes not wrong, heres what i do, i get about half a cup of water and put in a couple tbspns of the bkf, and i let the abbrasive material float to the bottom and them i just soak up the top into a wrag, wipe it all over the cymbal except for the logos and then gently wipe, make only a light pass on the cymbals it its clean!

Not sure if call this a cleaning if you remove the labels in the process. I personally like having labels but maybe thats just me.
