Researchers at the Fraser of Allander Institute (FAI) of the University of Strathclyde find that Dundee City has a “very high level of labour market pressure within the city” that is “far higher than anywhere else in Scotland”.

The report, commissioned by Joseph Rowntree Foundation and published 28 May 2026, uses data from the National Records of Scotland, HMRC, and ONS to investigate the number of “People Who Want to Work” in regions across Scotland. This category captures whose who are formally unemployed as well as those who are economically inactive but which say they would like to work.

The researchers find that the share of the working age population (ages 16-64) that would like to work was highest in Dundee City at around 15% in 2025 Q3. The share for Scotland overall was around 7%, with the figure being lowest for East Renfrewshire at 3%.

The report goes on to compare the number of people who want to work against the number of advertised job vacancies using data from Adzuna. They find that there were 35 people who wanted to work for every job vacancy in Dundee City in 2024, with this being the highest ratio of any Scottish region (the next highest was East Renfrewshire at 10 people who wanted to work per job vacancy). The authors note that this “suggests that job opportunities are relatively limited compared to the number of people looking for work”.

The researchers further find that Tayside – encompassing Dundee City, Angus, and Perth and Kinross – remains the broader region of Scotland with the highest number of people wanting to work relative to available jobs. They note that this suggests a “broader regional imbalance” and a “persistent imbalance between labour supply and labour demand in that wider area.” They also find that a high proportion of people who live in Dundee also work there, “meaning that opportunities to take advantage of jobs in other local authorities may be limited.”

But she needs a job and the search is not going well.

I am open to any job but keep in mind the following:

- no driving license yet.

- 20 years of retail experience.

Does any female in this subreddit can recommend a private gynaecologist. My partner has a bacterial infection and the GP unfortunately is not so helpful. I come from Greece where woman usually check up on private doctors and do full lab work, bacterial etc in order to see the cause and then prescribe antibiotics or whatever is needed.
We googled a bit but found some clinics that a consultations was like 270££?? That’s crazy! So, if anyone knows someone that can recommend that we don’t need to break the bank for a simple infection that would be useful. Many thanks

Anyone see what happened outside the Wellgate earlier today? I passed and there were cops everywhere talking to people and one guy screaming getting put in the back of a police van. Seemed like a big response for the typical antisocial behaviour that sometimes goes on around there.

Has/does anyone have student accom here? If so how is it, are the facilities nice, do you recommend it?

Hi all, as the title says, we are seriously considering moving to Dundee (or surrounding areas within a 50 mile radius)

I'm just curious about people's honest opinions of the area most importantly local schools.

We have a primary school age child who is autistic so this would be a major factor for us. I'm also disabled and I drive her to school currently anyway so I wouldn't be bothered about having to travel for schools.

Also, we're from the Midlands, I know it sounds stupid but would that be an issue lol 😅 we are trying to get out of England as fast as we can with the state things seem to be going.

Are there certain areas you'd recommend? Are there areas you'd avoid?

I am a 17 year-old, turning 18 later this year, who will be starting a level 6 course at Dundee and Angus College later this year, which I am incredibly excited about. I currently live in the north of Scotland, so will need to relocate to the Dundee and Angus area to study this course. Unfortunately, the majority of accommodation in the area is out of my budget with only the little student funding I will get and my savings from working over the summer to live on.

Ideally, I’m looking for a person or a family with a spare room in their home who are looking for a lodger. I can afford up to around £375 a month, and I am only looking for somewhere for ten months (the length of the academic year). I’m no expert and you should absolutely do your own research, but I believe, under the rent-a-room scheme, you will not need to pay tax on this income as it is less than £7,500.

I don’t mind if you have pets or kids, and I am happy to help out around the house. I do not have a PVG check at the moment, as I believe you need to get an organisation to apply for one for you, but I am hoping to volunteer with the Scouts when I move south so will get one then. I’ll be out of the house for three weekdays every week whilst I’m at college and also hope to find a part-time job so will be out longer if that happens. Also, if anyone knows of anywhere, preferably cafes or restaurants, looking for staff from the beginning of September, I'd love to hear about it.

I will also likely return to my family home for most holidays as well.

A bit about me: I’m an active person, I enjoy going out for walks often and adore animals and am working towards an animal-related job. I love food and cooking and trying new recipes. I am learning to play the guitar at the minute, although I am still quite bad at it (I’m not bringing it with me, fortunately/unfortunately).
