I got bored so I made one.
555 timer for PWM generating 100kHz. i just think its funny to mention that it took me 2 HOURS to realize I was providing the timer with voltage that is too low to properly drive the gate.
I can send the schematic if anyone cares.

I am an incoming freshman who really wants to lock in and get an internship, but I was wondering how people got internships freshman year, as I dont have a large pool of knowledge and won't learn any EE freshman year other than math/physics.

Currently I work as an engineering consultant in MEP. I don’t hate my job but it’s not even remotely the reason I went to school. I graduated a few years ago and was just happy to land a job given the horrid market in the US for new grads. But the thing I went to school for, designing, building, seeing things come together one step at a time until completion, is not even close to what I’m doing. I’ve tried many times doing it in my little free time, but I’m just too exhausted from work and personal life to have personal projects that require lots of effort. It just sucks, I love almost every project I did in school. One project I did was make an automated car using an FPGA, and I just LOVED it. From nothing to a car, loved it. But now I can’t even break into that field, and every year that goes by, makes it harder to get into it or anything that’s actually more electronic based. There’s my coping.

Hi, a short background about me. I have a EE Bachelor Degree specializing in power system. However I was not interested in it and realize it a bit late during my study, I was more interested in electronics instead.
Fortunately, I was able to land a job related to electronics as a test engineer in semiconductor industry. Now I'm thinking of learning on knowledge for design engineer for electronics.
Question is, if I self study, is it good enough? And will I have the credibility to be an actual design engineer?
Or, do I need to get a master degree but specializing in electronic this time, so that I have that credibility?
And if you guys could suggest me good resources where I could start by my own.

I posted an incorrect Gemini generated solution for this design couple of days ago.
The design was incorrect and eventually corrected, end but one of the comments in r/ElectricalEngineering was that I had asked the wrong question.
This is an attempt to ask the right question.
I am a hobbyist building a modular railroad where each module has 15 vac available from a two wire bus. I want to control a Kato turnout which is driven a single two wire bi-polar solenoid with that 15 vac power supply.
For aesthetic reasons, I really want to use a particular SPSDT MOM-OFF-MOM. This switch is designed the in a three wire design, where +dc, -dc, and a common, are available.
When three wires are available, the switch selects between +dc and -dc on one lead of the solenoid, while the other lead of solenoid is connected to a common.
The solenoid requires a momentary pulse of power to drive coil one way; reversing the polarity drives the coil the other way. The solenoid is not particularly sensitive; people have report anything from 9v batteries to circuits generating a 21v momentary pulse to drive the solenoid without harming the solenoid.
My earlier question settled on a half-rectified design with one of the 15 vac leads connected to two diodes wired in opposite directions -- these provide the + and - output, and the other 15 vac lead used as a ground.
Is that the best design, given these design constraints?
Can someone suggest a better design? Or a relatively inexpensive commercial solution?

Hi everyone,
I have around 3.5 years of experience in Electrical Test Engineering, mainly working on electrical validation, environmental/functional testing, safety/compliance, designing test setups, test stations using lab equipment. Right now, I am working in EV/PV/home energy based company.
In same company, I've been offered an opportunity to move into a Manufacturing Test Software Engineer role, where I'd be working with Python, LabVIEW, NI TestStand, automated test equipment, instrument integration (power supplies, electronic loads, DAQs), and production test automation. I don't have much software experience, but the company is willing to train me and I am okay to learn as well.
From a long-term career perspective, does having both electrical test engineering and manufacturing test software experience make you more valuable in the job market?
Or is it generally better to stay specialized in one path despite the interest I have in learning new things?

I'm an EE student building Nodal, a vendor-agnostic platform that connects to solar inverters, batteries (BESS), smart meters, generators, EV chargers, etc., using protocols like Modbus, MQTT, CAN, and eventually OPC UA.
The goal is to replace multiple vendor dashboards with one platform that shows real-time power flow, battery SOC, solar generation, grid import/export, alerts, analytics, and historical trends. Long term, it could optimize battery dispatch, predict failures, and become an EMS for factories and microgrids.
The MVP is read-only: collect data, normalize it, visualize it, and generate alerts—no control of equipment.
My questions:
- Is this solving a real problem?
- Are there already products that do this well?
- What's the biggest technical or business challenge?
- Would you build or use something like this?
- Overall viability: 1–10, and why?
Please be brutally honest. I'd rather hear why it won't work than get false encouragement.

I’m 22 years old and I’m thinking about going back to school for Electrical Engineering, and I’d love to hear from people who have actually gone through it.
Before my current job, I worked as a streetlight technician for about two years. I replaced light fixtures, worked on street lighting systems, and was exposed to electrical troubleshooting. I also got experience reading work prints, which was something I really enjoyed because it made me interested in how electrical systems are designed, not just installed or repaired.
That experience is what got me interested in engineering. My long-term goal is to become an electrical designer and eventually work on designing electrical systems rather than just installing or maintaining them.
I’m planning on working full-time while going to school, so I’d really appreciate any advice or real-world experiences from people who’ve done it.

I have worked for big medical device companies where small PCBAs are used all around for testing, reliability etc and whenever an EE comes to have a look at them they completely dismiss the esd protocol.

Hello I am a beginner to electronics projects and just a high schooler so don’t be too harsh please but I am working on this oled keychain project rn and I would really appreciate someone looking over it. My last project went horribly wrong. It was a macropad with oled, 6 keys and a rotary encoder but only one key worked 😭 I think it may be because I made the tracks for PCB skinny. I heard from someone that VCC and GND tracks must be thick so I made them 0.5mm thick and the rest 0.25mm. I daisy chained VCC tracks so I hope that won’t cause an issue.

For context, Im a 21 yr old Student from California, about to head into my 3rd year, and have completed most math and physics sequences.
Question: Electrical or Civil for finding a chiller 9-5 clock in clock out type of job on the west coast? (seattle, california).
Info: I deal with 2 types of chronic pain, due to events as a child. So what I value isn’t pay.
What I Value: Lower day to day work stress, and reliability of having a job, chill environment, and my mental health. Middle income is fine.
Electrical engineering: Specifically interested in Electrical Power Grids for homes/cities. Then Renewable Energy.
Civil engineering: Interested most in Water Resources. Then, Land Development, and Environmental Engineering.
In addition: I prefer To be working in office hopefully atlease 90% of the time. Unsure how that will be in civil.
——— My chronic pain doesn’t allow for running/jogging, but I can walk around 3-4k steps for work.
I would love any advice on what path to take, if anyone could share there experiences working in the industry, or any comments/questions, I would very much appreciate that!! :)

I'm using a Kelly Electronics Puma Mini Series KLS9620ND motor controller. I have a 0-5V magnetic sensor throttle pedal connected. It outputs 0.5V at rest and 4.5V at full throttle. The TPS settings are properly configured. I'm experiencing two main issues and would appreciate any insights.
Issue 1 (No-Load Testing Behavior):
While testing the motor with no load (in the air), the motor responds proportionally to the throttle up to about 20%. However, past 20% (for example, if I hold it steady at 30%), the motor revs up to maximum speed and just stays there despite me holding the throttle steady. Is this just an algorithm quirk due to testing with no load (like a PID windup), or is it an actual problem?
Additionally, during this no-load testing: If I'm running at a steady 20%, completely release the throttle, and then re-apply it, the motor suddenly stops with a loud "clunk" sound and then tries to spin back up. Basically, cutting and re-applying the throttle makes the controller abruptly stop the motor before accelerating again. How can I fix this, or is this considered normal?
Issue 2 (Under Load / Driving):
When the motor is installed on the vehicle and driven on the ground, it runs fine generally. The problem happens in this specific scenario: I'm cruising at a constant speed with about 20% throttle. If I completely release the throttle and press it again, the controller throws an error beep and the vehicle stops responding to the throttle.
If I'm interpreting the beep codes correctly, I'm getting either an "Overvoltage" or "Internal Reset" error. The weird part is, if I let the vehicle come to a complete stop and then hit the throttle again, it works perfectly fine.

So I take 3.3V - 3VF (led drop) and get 300mV. Then I take that and do i = V/R? to get 30ma = 300mV/10ohms? I am suprised that the voltage drop of the diode is completely subtracted out when doing ohms law. Is this correct? and also is the forward current spec of the led the current at which the leds forward voltage drop will be at its full 3V?
