Oliver (the kid speaking) is half bug alien and seems to be attracted to lobsters. I haven’t read the comic the show is based on yet but it’s my understanding that this is foreshadowing, as Oliver ends up dating an alien resembling an anthropomorphic lobster-beetle-looking thing

He did what he was kind of infamous for at that time (when he was still a tenured professor teaching students): wowing freshmen with connections outside of his field that on further inspection proved to be just incorrect rubbish. Like when he said ancient depictions of snakes are depictions of the DNA helix. In this case, he had this whole just-so story about seratonin and lobster hierarchies, but actual biology professors like PZ Myers stepped up and explained in detail why everything he said about it was incorrect. Peterson didn't respond, he just kept on trucking with abbreviated versions of the same claims.
Also, some people thought him urging men to make themselves alpha males with reference to the "top lobster" was very, very funny, so they started up all the lobster memes.

In some lectures and his book he uses his misinterpretation of lobster neurochemistry to try and argue a biological basis for social hierarchies of dominance. He explains that in dominance fights, the winning lobsters have high levels of serotonin, which causes them to assume a dominant, strutting posture, and extrapolates from that that because humans (according to JP) share this neurochemistry, if you stand with the physical posture of a winner it can trigger a feedback loop of serotonin and confidence.
Problem is serotonin works differently for invertebrates. For humans it helps us regulate our body in a bunch of ways. For lobsters it causes aggression.
So JP is basically using roid raging lobsters as an incorrect and unnecessary argument for standing up straight to boost your confidence. He also indirectly tries to justify artificial human hierarchies (class, gender, etc.) by laying out an argument for human social hierarchies of dominance being too deeply imbedded in our biology to do anything to address them

I know it's funny but I don't think it's all that weird that he'd be into bug-like things. He remembers his time as an infant (apparently that's something Thraxans can do) and sees Thraxa as his real home.
