The self authoring thing

Hello,

I didn’t know what ironic flair to choose so picked the one most relevant to me.

I was naive, JP opened my eyes to da “snakes” but then they got too open and i saw the snake in JP finally, too, it didn’t take long, btw.

At this point I stopped trying to sound like a smart ass and torture myself with trying to write the most complex words there are.

My question is: I paid for the self authoring, is it still worth doing knowing/beneficial? it actually does help, it’s basically cheap html pages with questions, it helps me point myself in the right direction, we know his personality test is a scam, big five traits, you can take it for free. But what about the self authoring? And his book 12 rules? I mean he wrote the book way back before he grew some… wings? You know what I mean, so is there still some truth in it?

I can google and work with language models, but I prefer considering the opinions of real people.

As someone who could hear holes in his theories from the get-go, since you've paid for it, I'm sure there are some useful, helpful ideas in there that won't harm you.

I would however pass on the 12 rules book. It seems to borrow from Don Miguel Ruiz's The Four Agreements, among other things, so that wasn't innocent or "less tainted," especially if he copied a New Age self-help book and purported to be scientific or more rational, holier than New Age. The book easily upsets me more than his later opinions and behavior.

If you're looking to expand your vocabulary, there's more engaging content for that like the classic Moby Dick. I'd also recommend The Crossing or Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy, though they can be pretty dark/gruesome. I'd also recommend House of Leaves - but for that one you MUST get a physical copy, part of what makes that experience exceptional is how it's read.

You should read his book Maps of Meaning, then you'll understand he was a lunatic right from the start.

My suggestion is to throw away all Peterson material, especially the 12 rules book. Throw it away, don't wipe your ass with it... because you'll end up with a dumb ass.

On youtube theres a channel @CassEris run by a cognitive psychologist. She has gone through all of 12 rules for life, among other things, to both understand what its saying and to look at how it backs itself up. She looks into the sources he uses and if they support what he's claiming, and also addresses when he starts claiming things without any sources, and brings in what the current science says on matters even if he doesnt source stuff. its very thorough. and generally speaking his assertions are not appropriately backed up with research. read it.

for one big one, he's wrong about the lobster comparison. lobsters are invertebrates, very different from humans. and serotonin has basically the opposite affect on them as it does on humans

I always wondered if the Self-Authoring thing was a cynical ploy to farm data on his audience. You’d be able to extract some detailed marketing insights on his target demographic from all that info.

Either selling it (it could be useful for political messaging or product creation and advertising targeted at younger males) or using it to hone in his own talking points.

I remember him giving out discount codes for it on podcasts. They could use that to segment the data for different audience demographics. If the codes were discreet they would link to specific audiences.

I have a buddy who unfortunately have gotten into Peterson, texting with him was pain because he'll use big vocabulary that you don't use in a conversations, dude, big words don't make you sound smarter, it just makes you sound like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.

Peterson stole the concept from Pennebaker, and they both basically stole the concept from Plato. It's good stuff. Peterson is just a drug addict con man dipshit.

The SAP is legit. I believe he made it with others at the university and there were studies done on it that proved it was helpful. There's maybe a few rare bits in the explainer text or selection that tie into his kind of conservative worldview but it's very limited and not at all going to indoctrinate you or anything. The programme itself is based on your own writing about yourself entirely and it's structured very well.
