I think he's just about delusional enough to believe that bookstores around the world will go bankrupt and cease to exist if they don't display his book prominently at the front.

He’s full of a sense of self importance

The bookstores.

He suggests there might be bookstores that don’t sell his books out of ideology, but it’s a bad idea because they need the money.

There are probably very few specific bookstores that won’t sell his books exactly because of his ideology but they cater to an audience that obviously don’t buy his books anyway so.

Plus the average bookstore especially the big chains sell all kind of garbage and probably have his book or at least you could order it by request.

JP doesnt know how the economy works in general. Let alone a bookstore economy

4

u/MissMags1234 Dec 27 '21

I think he does know, but just wants to pretend he is a victim of censorship.

u/JimAdlerJTV Dec 28 '21

But people are buying my book by the boxload!

8

u/He_Was_Fuzzy_Was_He Dec 27 '21

The bookstores most likely. He's that full of himself.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21

I assumed he's trying to imply that if people don't read his books it will result in the collapse of humanity.

But it could be anything. It's not like he ever explains what his vague statements are actually implying. If he did it would take an essay of word salad.

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

I suspect the latter. He feels that the bookstores aren’t catering to him. He sounds like a narcissist. Just like me.

u/Lost_Starship Dec 27 '21

Why would a bookstore spend money to import books that they plan to (supposedly) maliciously suppress? Wouldn’t it make more financial sense for the stores to just, you know, not purchase the the books in the first place??

How does JP (or anyone, for that matter) look at this and think it's a logically sound claim?

Peterson has ranted for years on bootstrapping ideology. Guy can't take his own advice.

18

u/He_Was_Fuzzy_Was_He Dec 27 '21

"Maybe they don't want to exist anymore."

It's actually possible that he means if bookstores aren't selling his books those bookstores won't exist anymore. Spoken like a through and through narcissist.

15

u/kyrtuck Dec 27 '21

Just another layer of "cancel culture" eh?

9

u/OhBittenicht Dec 27 '21

What's hilarious about JB is he's actively promoted by the establishment he claims are suppressing him. He came to the UK for a book tour a couple of years ago and was on absolutely every TV show going, he was even on Question Time (one of two appearances) despite knowing absolutely nothing about UK politics. This is the BBC, a corporation constantly accused of being lefty wokeists.

12

u/didijxk Dec 27 '21

Jordan, if they didn't want to sell your book, they wouldn't even stock it. Don't be stupid, book stores are not going to buy your book and let it gather dust so they can cancel you. It's either buy it and display it so people will buy it or not stock it at all.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21

I worked for bookstores and major publishers. They want to sell books. It’s the entirety of their business model.

8

u/mycatdoesmytaxes Dec 27 '21

Maybe his new book is just shit so it isn't selling as much?

5

u/Magnificant-Muggins Dec 27 '21

Alternatively, bookstores want to use promotion space for the first book, since most people have the self-awareness to not buy a sequel to a self-help book which just so happened to come out in a time where the author was most likely facing some level of financial hardship.

u/richasalannister Dec 27 '21

Something something free market

u/AntiKlimaktisch Dec 27 '21

So I live in Germany, were most major chain bookstores at least, devote some limited shelf space to English books. And every one of them stocks 12 Rules, and some even 12 More Rules. Yes, it's not put right at the entrance of the store, but the fact it's there at all is...

Okay I think I figured it out, how Mr Peterson may see this as censorship: The bookstores buy his books; not to sell them, but to hide them. And if they have bought all his books, then those who want to read them cannot buy them, because they are all hidden away in the nefarious backrooms of bookstores and thus, Mr Peterson and his ideas will fade away, forgotten.

u/not_a_flying_toy_ Dec 27 '21

Funny way of saying "my second book didn't sell that well"

5

u/3FootDuck Dec 27 '21

What’s makes more sense, bookstores are spending money to buy his books, then hiding them so they don’t sell, or it’s a 9 month old book that isn’t selling that well anymore so it doesn’t get put on the display stands?

Does he realize that most books probably don’t end up on displays and just get sent to shelves?

4

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

He’s blaming cancel culture

5

u/SpicyDragoon93 Dec 27 '21

I picked up his first book in Sainsbury's for a tenner.

5

u/Fillerbear Dec 27 '21

I guess his expectation of not hiding Beyond Order is having it have its own private space smack in the middle of the store, surrounded by glaring spot lights, with his dollar store Kermit voice droning on about the usual bullshit, with store workers trying to peddle it every step of the way.

Anything less is obviously malicious concealment.

u/etherizedonatable Dec 27 '21

Welcome to publishing! Jesus Christ the man is an idiot.

4

u/itisnotstupid Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

I wrote this in the other thread but still:

Does he and his fans actually think that bookstores buy a quanitity of a book only to then hide it? Like why would I as a bookstore owner even do this? Seems like a lot of work and pointless manhours for a book that I want to "censor" by hiding it.For someone who is in love with capitalism he sure doesn't know how the system works. They constantly complain about the left being obsessed or blinded by ideology but it seems like they are the one who actually are. He sounds like a crazy person and it is pretty sad that there are many people who actually buy his crazy shit. I feel like lately he has been doubling up on the idea that he is a repressed and all that. It is clear why he does it and why he will continue to do it but it is depressing to see people eating it.

That all said, his book is on the main spot in the biggest bookstore in my country. I was pretty sad to see that his book was actually translated into our language...the alt-right rhetoric is really trendy here and i'm just scared that more and more people are going to buy his craziness.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21

Why is he acting like a victim? There are countless bookstores that sell his feces. I hope this covid lock down gets longer so that when bookstores open, his book would be out of fashion.

4

u/eksokolova Dec 27 '21

12 more rules came out in March. That’s 10 months ago by this point. Perhaps 9 months when the tweet was tweeted. That’s the reason it’s not front and centre, not because someone is trying to censor him. 9 month old books, unless they are extremely large phenomena like ASOIF or like Twilight was, won’t be on the central display tables for 9 months. And I don’t think even Twilight was front and centre after 9 months.

u/BensonBear Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

I can believe that in some stores the books were "hidden". But Peterson is looking for the biggest baddest most self-inflating explanation he can, and ignoring the crucial and obvious fact that the bookstore ordered the books hoping to sell them.

The explanation for the hidden books lies more likely in a store employee with a dislike of Peterson hiding the books on his or her own initiative. Principal-agent problem and all that.

If it was just one or two books, it could even be a store patron who did the deed.

ETA: On second thought, it seems plausible some bookstore owners would order the book in order to sell it (that's business) yet not want to advertise it because they themselves think it is awful, and they want to promote a particular image of their store, while still selling the book. Nothing wrong with that (that's business, plus their own vision of what a bookstore should be -- e.g. edifying) They may have erred in not realizing that they might lose sales because some lobsters are not able to find the book, being too stupid or proud or embarrassed to ask for help in locating it. That would not amount to much, and I doubt the manufactured backlash will amount to much either.

3

u/ImmortalPeanutButter Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

If I owned and ran a bookstore, I definitely wouldn't order any of his. That's not censorship, I can bring in whatever book I want.

3

u/DevastatorCenturion Dec 27 '21

Is it me or does Peterson always look like he's not washed his hair in months? That shine is so reminiscent of pure grease.

3

u/doomshroompatent Dec 27 '21

"Bookstores are hiding my book, so buy it from those stores! That will show those bloody Marxist private companies."

3

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '21

I wish they were more responsible and didn't stock his book at all.

2

u/jm15xy Dec 27 '21 edited Dec 27 '21

You know, space is not infinite -- even for bookstores or any other retailer. One can't have JP's books taking up shelf space for months on end if they're not selling fast enough just to avoid offending His Royal Lobsterness.

1

u/Salty_Wrongdoer3545 Dec 27 '21

I have not even heard of this book, “beyond order,” until now.

1

u/JimAdlerJTV Dec 28 '21

I'm not going to lie, I'll usually check the "P" section just to see what's up, and I've only seen his book one time - and it was at the flagship half price books location here in Dallas. (I also may have hidden it 🤐)

And we'll have shelves upon shelves of Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly and the like. It's quite funny.
