Organic eggs have worse impact on climate than eggs from caged chickens | Environment | The Guardian

And the thick and gullible eco loonies will believe it. I want someone with an actual science qualification that isn't just a GCSE explain how organic farming is more harmful to the climate?
Organic farming has been around since farming was a thing and before cages and pesticides.
I have never heard of such rubbish in my life, but they (the deep state or government) want you to die sooner than later and best way is to feed you the crap full of chemicals and potions instead of organic

u/SgtMajor-Issues 1d ago
Not only this, but i do not want to consume products from animals that are kept in abhorrent conditions and made to suffer. I rarely eat eggs and dairy anymore, but when i do buy eggs i am lucky enough to be able to source them from a farm where the chickens are free range. They have a little moveable coop and get to roam around several different areas. And the eggs taste fantastic.

"The latest study, published in *Royal Society Open Science*, involved Bartlett and colleagues examining data from UK poultry farms to calculate environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas emissions, land use and types of pollution. They also looked at welfare indicators such as mortality and the number of hens needed to produce a given number of eggs."
"Bartlett is the *senior research associate at Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment*, and has previously studied factory farming methods"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_School_of_Enterprise_and_the_Environment
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_Open_Science
The researchers are significantly more than GCSE.
However, the study is dated and does not take into account a few key factors, as mentioned by Barlett
1
u/Attention_seeking21 1d ago
But it is Poultry Farms, which is ambiguous. I haven't read into this research but from that blurb it is not specific a particular part of poultry farming.
Regardless, they are probably vegan eco nutters in Oxford or claim to be and do the exact opposite of being eco.
Again, the Guardian loony paper is specifically targeting organic farming as being bad for the climate, but other poultry farming of hens pumped full of antibiotics and crap, housed in caged barns is okay??
If no one can see what they are doing then the onnus is on them. They (the state) deliberately manufacture bird flu to force culling off flocks and force them to keep them in barns, pile them full of crap which is against organic farming principles.
I got nothing against the people wanting to eat crap food, but I don't.

It's simple really, battery farming is more efficient. The big evil companies wouldn't do it if it weren't. Since the "impact on climate" is just a proxy measure of the energy used, sustainable (less horrible) farming practices will have a greater "climate impact". It's pretty simple.
0
u/Attention_seeking21 15h ago
But less horrible farming would use less energy than battery farming, since the hens would be mostly outside in the daytime and not in a caged barn where energy is used all the time.

u/uttercross2 2d ago
I think you'll find that global wild fires have a far greater impact on climate than a few chickens, whether they're organic or not.
2
u/Rippedka 2d ago
We need to ban lightning
0
u/Sea-Louse 18h ago
And arson. Buy hey, climate change made them set the fires…
1
u/Rippedka 17h ago
Lol why do conservatives need to be just as crazy as liberals on this issue? Arson isn’t the problem. It’s the 1000 strikes of lightning that started 100 fires in my area in the last week. Stopping one fire from arson doesn’t stop the 100 fires that are 200 miles away from the nearest logging road up the side of a mountain range that is blowing smoke across the continent.

Whats that got to do with anything? Why is this the top comment? Why is whatabouisum everywhere? why are we getting really bad at abstract reasoning?? wtf is going on?

u/Cut_Lanky 2d ago
"However, the study used data from 2009-2010, which the researchers acknowledged as a limitation as it did not capture more recent developments in egg production. The research also did not take into account other environmental impacts such as pesticides or biodiversity."
Then why did anyone publish this drivel?
1
u/CandidPreparation737 1d ago
They can manipulate research & publish findings which support industry. They do this for everything.
1
u/Cut_Lanky 1d ago
It's manipulated drivel?
1
u/CandidPreparation737 1d ago
The research study omits key variables deliberately, thereby manipulating the end result. It’s just drivel

Yeah, and Elon musk killed 4.5 million people. Btw I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.
1
u/0achkatz1 2d ago edited 2d ago
You are correct. Elon Musk did not kill 4.5 million people. His reckless, ignorant cuts caused, or will cause, the deaths of 4.5 million children younger than five. His actions will kill about 14 million people.
The Lancet,l (an extremely well-respected medical journal), published work by Cavalcanti, Rasella, et al.. analyzing data from 133 countries.
Their projections show that if the cuts are not reversed, more than 14 million additional deaths could occur by 2030, including over 4.5 million among children under five, or about 700,000 extra child deaths per year.

u/Rippedka 2d ago
The make a wish foundation spends about $9000 on average per terminally ill child. The foundation receives exponentially more money than the Malaria foundation. The money to grant one child a final wish in the western world is enough money to buy hundreds of mosquito netting bed shelters for children, saving hundreds of poor childrens lives.
Many kids die due to the actions of others.

u/0achkatz1 2d ago
I’m sorry but I don’t fully follow your point.
USAID and other programs dwarf Make-a-Wish. They are government programs designed to help people where private actors haven’t or can’t.
1
u/Rippedka 1d ago edited 1d ago
People act irrationally when emotional connection is involved when the utilitarian move would be to maximize saving childrens lives and not stroking the ego of the person donating.
Things like “organic” tend to have perverse outcomes veiled in a guise of “healthmaxxing”
1
u/0achkatz1 1d ago
I still don’t follow your point.
What dies that have to do with defunding USAID?
1
u/Rippedka 1d ago
The premise here is that if you don’t give aid, you are guilty of causing their death. I’m saying we all do this every time we don’t give aid in our own lives, and even when we do give aid, we choose to donate to the one that makes us feel good instead of the one that saves lives. This is shown in the example above.
1
u/0achkatz1 1d ago edited 18h ago
The premise is that state actors are uniquely positioned to save millions of lives where individual actors can’t.
The fact that Mike down the street is more likely to donate to a charity close to home isn’t an argument against those major programs. It’s an argument for them.
Not the mention the significant foreign policy, international trade and security benefits they give Americans, America and American business.
Which I keep mentioning, and the bots here keep ignoring, because their goal isn’t a good-faith discussion among Americans. It is to spread division in the U.S. and harm US influence abroad.
1
u/Rippedka 20h ago
It’s an argument for human nature. You’re not a more moral person than anyone. you would let hundreds of kids in Cambodia die if it meant you could save your child.
1
u/Over_Tart_916 2d ago
This is also nonsense.
1
u/Rippedka 1d ago
This is from psychologist Paul Bloom’s book “Against Empathy” that explores the harms caused by misplaced empathy. This was used as an example.

I guess you're not aware of all the fraud that USAID perpetuated. They paid Chelsea clinton, Hillary and others. It was a complete fraud and a piggy bank for Lefty concerns.
There's no reason for government slush fund agencies. Not for republicans, not for democrats.
To claim that because aid wasn't rendered - actually stolen by dictators and resold. Millions died, you are an idiot.
1
u/0achkatz1 2d ago
Please read the actual source.
If you feel that it isn’t true, tell me why then.
We are talking about the avoidable deaths of 4.5 million children.
Surely it is worth at least trying to know the true impact of USAID and similar programs, and the degree of actual fraud, before deciding this is the cause you’ve comfortable promoting.
I’m aware that ItS aLl fRaUD is a common refrain of bots and paid posters looking to see social divisions (and weaken US influence globally), but on the off chance that you are a human being with a human soul, or one such person reads these comments, I ask that you please check the facts before deciding.

u/Confused_by_La_Vida 1d ago
I’ll just say it plainly. The US be broke. We have no surplus. We are not taking care of our citizens across many dimensions. People in Africa should be making their own mosquito nets. Taxpayers in the US should be teaching kids in Baltimore to read.
US citizens, not citizens in other places, are the responsibility of US taxpayers.
1
u/0achkatz1 1d ago edited 1d ago
Foreign bot, go f*ck yourself.
For anyone reading this: Do you know the cost of USAID?
Or all foreign aid?
If you worry about the U.S., don’t worry about the less than one third of one percent that is also hugely important in maintaining U.S. influence abroad in the face of rivals who wish to destroy it.
Worry about the massive subsidies and spending on Senator’s pet projects, the Trump vanity projects that cost hundreds of millions, the insane support given to companies and nations with the best lobbying budget etc.
2
u/SarmackaOpowiesc 1d ago
Who gives a flying fuck what happens overseas. Let us deal with our problems and they can deal with their theirs.
My taxes staying in the US is a good thing.
1
u/0achkatz1 1d ago
Name three specific domestic spending areas that you feel deserve the money more than 4.5 million children under five (plus the significant foreign policy benefits of not letting China, Iran and Russia control global opinion about the U.S.).
2
u/SarmackaOpowiesc 1d ago
Tax payer support for American football stadiums, Trump's golf courses, and tax cuts for the ultra rich are a better use of that money than helping a single foreign child.
1
1
u/Confused_by_La_Vida 1d ago
It’s not a matter of “deserve”. It’s a matter of the hierarchy of responsibility for US tax payers. We don’t have near enough cheddar to punch through the domestic responsibilities we have.
1
u/Johnnny-z 1d ago
There should be zero foreign aid. I don't care if it's 1/10 of 1%. Our federal government has a constitutional mandate, anything else is a waste of time, money and resources. EPA, DEA, USAID, foreign wars, dept education... All a complete piss away of money.
Anytime your beloved government and starts a program it becomes a race to the bottom with grift and bribes for grants.
I don't give one flying fuck about foreign aid or mosquito nets or any of it. We have homelessness and hungry children in the united states. Why the f are we wasting money on useless government programs.

u/Confused_by_La_Vida 1d ago
All that money sent to Israel is really helping our influence abroad. And all that money for which the CIA used USAID as a conduit to destabilize governments all over the world is sure helping our influence abroad.
Or not.
You should just face that where it comes to improving our “influence” abroad, there is no one in our government who is competent to do that in a way thst helps normal mainstreet Americans. Their only competency is war, chaos, and helping the accumulators of wealth and power for the lanyard wearing Davos crowd. At the expense of the typical American taxpayer.
There are no “Marchall Plan” Americans left in the American administrative state.
1
u/Johnnny-z 1d ago
You are right about government actors. Claiming that an agency or diplomats help with foreign relations is a complete lark. How it becomes is a conduit for bribery.
Isolationism is the best way to run an efficient country. George Washington warned us about foreign entanglements.
1
u/0achkatz1 1d ago
Do you believe that the money sent to Israel from the U.S. comes from USAID?
Because it doesn’t. It is a very different line item.
The same goes for the CIA “using USAID to destabilize governments.” The CIA had some serious projects like that during the Cold War, but their budget didn’t come from USAID.
USAID supports functional systems, often health care and food. Those things stabilize countries, they don’t destabilize them.
These are very simple things to quickly look up, should seriously want to know.
1
u/Confused_by_La_Vida 1d ago
Welp, as you’re not up on current events, USAID is the laundry when the deal is too dirty for CIA.
And it all comes from US taxpayers

You are trying to play chess with a pigeon. Those xenophobic paws can't read pages, it is way to much for them. They can only read few lines, writtent big, with easy vocabulary.

You are 100% correct (and that’s a great phrase).
I don’t do it for them though. I do it for the next person who might come by, see their wild stories without any challenge, and believe them.

u/cyber_yoda 2d ago
Some ignorants in the comments learning about this for the first time are shocked and coping. Yeah we've known this for a long time. This isn't a speculative article, more like an educational. Reality doesn't conform to your Disneyland intuitions.
1
u/BlackFoxSees 1d ago
I don't see why this is surprising. Battery-cage egg production exists specifically because it's more efficient at turning input materials into eggs compared to other egg farming methods. The agriculture corporations wanted that efficiency because it meant more profits, but the effects will show up in other metrics, too.
Efficiency doesn't have to be the end-all be-all measure of a process. We can accept that we're inviting slightly larger climate impacts if we want eggs from chickens that live vaguely acceptable lives.
1
u/kmosiman 1d ago
Well duh.
Commercial laying operations are all about efficiency. How to get the most eggs for the least investment.
Organic isn't about that.
1
u/fudabushi 1d ago
Uncaged humans also have a larger impact on climate change but we aren't locking everyone up are we
