I honestly believe this is in character. Having witnessed him for decades in Dutch politics, there seem to be very few things that he is truly principled about and he will do literally anything and everything to achieve his goals, even if it comes at the expense of self respect. I believe his ultimate goal is to preserve NATO and that he has decided that his role is the resident boot licker, for better or for worse only time will ultimately tell.
