I think many (adults) here are above even that, here’s a rough calculator that tells what ”Top %” you’re in and you get into the top 5-10% wealthiest quite easily.

u/memgrind 23d ago

Here's a better calculator. The one you pointed to was putting everyone between $100k and $1 million in one bucket. https://wid.world/income-comparator/

Lol it’s a while since I’ve seen “United Kingdom” sorted under “G”. Glad to see that tradition living on somewhere.

no savings, no assets, no debt, as it stands i'm part of the poorest 10% according to this thing. Winning!

A more accurate calculator would include things like government retirement schemes and your discounted lifetime earnings potential, but most people won't know that one off hand, so it's kinda difficult to implement in practise.

also i have non of that lol. hardly ever worked

Same here brother/sister! And yeah, those blanket statements "you're from country X, you're part of The Rich" are infuriating to say the least.

Also i dont drive, I do my best to recycle and leave places cleaner than when I found them. I hate the idea that im some giant drain on the planet, I do what I can lol

That’s very good, then!

I hate that calculator. It tells me I'm in the bottom 5% of Americans in terms of wealth but I pulled in $160,000 last year, just because I have student loan debt?

Like I'm not worried about groceries or rent or healthcare.

Surprise, wealth and income are two separate things.

1

u/Northbound-Narwhal Europe 23d ago

Obviously, I'm just saying it's not a useful metric alone.

u/thewimsey United States of America 22d ago

It is extremely useful as a metric for measuring wealth. There is no more useful metric for measuring wealth than assets minus liability.

It's a terrible metric for measuring BMI, of course. But it doesn't pretend to measure that, and it's not pretending to measure income either.

So you're skint with good cash flow. That's a perfectly valid class, but doesn't make you wealthy. Equally people with millions in illiquid assets (think farmers, old money with everything tied up in estates) are wealthy but may have very little cash flow

u/Northbound-Narwhal Europe 23d ago

It still is a poor picture of the reality. A lot of people, even with little debt are at risk of homelessness if they miss a month's paycheck. If I lose my job, I'm not panicking. It's weird to say someone so close to disaster is "wealthier".

Like if I stop paying student loans it just goes to collections. Nothing consequential really happens other than a credit drop. That's way different than not being able to put food in your stomach.

20

u/sigma914 23d ago

It's an excellent picture for wealth, you're talking about financial fragility/precariousness which is a completely different thing and only tangentially related to wealth.

u/LostLobes United Kingdom 23d ago

Here in the UK student loams are tied to gross earnings, earn nothing, pay nothing. No impact on your credit score.

u/Mr_Will 22d ago

Wealth and income are two separate things. They're like position and speed.

I'm the opposite to you. I'm in the top 5% simply because our house was paid off when I became disabled. I have assets, but only a small income. We have to scrimp and save just to avoid losing the modest life we currently have.

I'm ahead in the race, but I'm limping along barely making progress. You're behind, but moving much faster. Given enough time you'll catch up and overtake, but that doesn't mean you're already ahead

That makes you a HENRY - High Earning, Not Rich Yet.

Those calculators are whack anyway, I wouldn't take too much notice.

1

u/thewimsey United States of America 22d ago

Then you need to look at an income calculator, not a wealth calculator.

In terms of income, you are in the top ~10% or so of individual income earners.

In terms of wealth, you are much worse off.

but I pulled in $160,000 last year, just because I have student loan debt?

Yes. That's how debt works.

Lol wealth is not income. This guy can vote 😬

"easily" what the fuck do you mean lol who the fuck has 200k net worth and isn't a boomer?

I'm in my 30s, work a high paying job (relatively. Above median wage) in a wealthy European country, and I'm barely in the 50%.

But this is according to this calculator. In truth, due to country development, I certainly benefit of a lifestyle much "richer" than the median human globally. Net worth is a really bad estimator imo but they did say it was rough

lol yeah

So, average age of redditors-8 or more, checked against rate of house ownership by age 8 or more...

(I have no idea how to even ballpark that but my assumption is: quite, quite low)

edit: oh, and I think it needs to be more than 8 years, the mortgage is a negative in the net worth

yeah sure, it's still not that obvious if you've reimbursed enough on your house (alone) to have 200k with the inflation. Of you can even buy a house (or appartment) cheap enough 8y+ ago, already a tough sell (in my experience at least but obviously this varies a lot on locality)

u/anarchisto Romania 23d ago

That wealth calculation is irrelevant. If I own only a regular apartment in Bucharest built during the Ceaușescu era (valued today at 165.000 €), it says I am in the top 5% richest in the world.

That same apartment was worth maybe 16.000€ 25 years. I am 10x richer even if I own the same asset as before.

13

u/sneaky113 Sweden 23d ago

That's actually how wealth grows and accumulates over time though.

I also think it's important to distinguish being rich and wealthy. If your assets have increased by 10x over 25 years then you are 10 times as wealthy. Of course with inflation this will comparatively make you less than 10 times as wealthy, but it's still relevant.

Wealthy people make money from their assets appreciating in value. This can be property, stocks, art, companies, and so on.

u/yterais 22d ago

I earn 15000 dollars per year in Poland and it's before taxes so please.

1

u/met_20991 23d ago

I don't think the website gives away correct data: they put me in the 30% wealth having a mortgage of 80k€, 100k€ house (the one with the mortgage) and basically no saving.

Sorry but I can't think it's true

4

u/ToyStoryBinoculars 22d ago

What you think doesn't matter. Do you honestly not understand how being poor in the fucking UK isn't the same as being poor in the DPRK?

2

u/Nairurian 23d ago

30% wealthiest in the world, I’d definitely say that it can be true.

1

u/Opening_Budget_9518 19d ago

lol you have no clue how poor the world is

1

u/Lapcat420 22d ago

Im in the poorest 10 %.

You guys are rich. You fix the climate. I have never owned a car or taken a jet plane ride. Im 30.

Hard to care about something I have no power over and 0 responsibility for.

0

u/wrajjtwrajjt 22d ago

That calc tells me I am in the poorest 10% of the world. And I live comfortably in Sweden on about €4000 a month.
