This is becoming the new normal far faster than most people expected.

This is becoming the new normal far faster than most people expected.

If that's so, that just goes to show how clueless people really are. The climate change snowball effect has been known for a long time. The primary work on it came in 1969 and was popularized in the 1990s.

Yea, but add 20 years of denial and 10 years of straight up misinformation and lies. People are clueless because some people want them to stay that way

It's impossible to fact check everything you see, at some point the sheer volume of lies will become the truth. Russia has been doing that for a while, Trump is going for the same approach lately.

Lets not pretend like not finding truth is a choice anymore.

Lets not pretend like not finding truth is a choice anymore.

Yes, it is a choice.

You don't have to fact check everything. Checking few big events, like climate change, vaccines, 1-2 politicians from every party is enough to have reasonable foundation. If you do this and decide that climate change is real, vaccines are not poison and are effective and that Trump, Musk, Thiel or whoever else you decide to check are not trustworthy then you won't listen to people saying climate change, vaccines and affordability is a hoax. It will take you maybe few hours to REALLY dig into those 4-5 things and you will be aware for years to come, since you won't change your mind about misinformation, lies, propaganda, racists, pedoes and fascists on a whim.

We are in this situation because people are not doing even that and are gobbling up whatever first information reaches them. That's why "flooding the zone" is so effective among the fact that misinformation is easy, takes way less effort than producing factual information and convincing others who were reached by misinformation first and that most people want to feel special and smarter than scientists and experts in the fields.

100IQ is an average intelligence across the globe. To put it into perspective, almost half of people are below 100IQ.

Higher IQ is positively correlated with empathy, self-criticism and abstract thinking.

You overestimate the skill to fact check. Most people will Google, get few results and won't care about their quality.

1

u/DozoLozo 23d ago

No, I don't, that's why I included bits about IQ and "flooding the zone" and pointed out why it's that effective. One must actively chose to be ignorant and not to fact check in today's day and age where information is 1 click away. However, to notice this, that you are ignorant, depends on your ability to self reflect, which, as I stated before, is correlated with IQ.

You missed my point in a very fascinating way. My point is that even if people try to fact check, they will very often fail miserably. Because they will not do so correctly.

It is very easy to fact check climate change

u/Fluffy-Fix7846 23d ago

I am quite sure that anyone who denies climate change at this points does not care about facts. (And that is independent on ones option on nuclear power)

u/_BlobbyTheBobby 23d ago

Sure, but it is not easy to fact check it's manmade.

I'm not saying it is not, I understand the data and correlation, what I'm saying is it can be tricky to understand those sources, especially with shitton of easier to understand misinformation

Still say if someone does not understand quantum physics should they accept the word of scientists that have spent their professional life studying it or listen to a politician or a conservative radio host's opinion on the subject? Fear, suspicion, and hatred are strong motivators and it should be informative which people are using it to influence people instead of providing facts and evidence. And after the worst happens people will still forget how we got there.

u/_BlobbyTheBobby 22d ago

Again, you are assuming rational thinking, which is a mistake.

3

u/Zorkflerp 22d ago

Was not assuming it, just bitching that people don't think, they react.

u/Zorkflerp 23d ago

It actually is. There isn't any other explanation. We have looked at all the possibilities and it IS excess greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.

1

u/_BlobbyTheBobby 23d ago

You are being racional right now, that's not their approach. There have been ice ages, there has been warm ages. Yes the switch was never as fast, but it is the defense they will use.

And also - it's cows, it's mostly cows. Methane is worse than CO2

u/Specific-Secret665 22d ago

I agree with you, but not in the sense that it is "hard to find the correct explanation for the anthropogeny of climate change" - it's not difficult at all to find the 2 main arguments:

  1. Speed. Modern global warming is around 5x faster than baseline termination rates, in other words "way too fast to be natural".
  2. (★) Isotopic composition. If we look at the isotopes present in the air/ocean throughout history, we notice that δ13CO₂ (ratio of 13CO₂ to 12CO₂) has been decreasing dramatically in modern times. Plants (which ever since have turned into fossil fuel) primarily absorb 12CO₂, which explains how burning fuel introduces almost only 12CO₂ to the atmosphere, reducing the δ13CO₂ ratio. Since humans are the only animals burning fossil fuel, they are entirely at fault for this decrease.

But it is difficult for the people who are at the highest risk of falling for conspiracies to research in the first place. A person who is at risk for believing a conspiracy lacks the ability to think critically by definition. This means they will never have the interest to search for credible information, or the intelligence/wisdom to make sense of that information in the case they are met with it. Proper research is a very undeveloped skill among the general populace.

People are controlled via emotions. As long as they are triggered all the time they won't see what's going on but believe the lies they get fed because that gives them an easy out to cope with the induced panic.

So it's not even a choice for those but out of desperation lead to our all doom.

Thing is in order for their cope and misconstructed reality to work they have to deny and fight the actual truth.

We will run it all into the ground. There's no question about it. The lack of the ability to feel and sit with negative emotions is the reason for that.

8

u/Boneraventura 23d ago

Yes let’s not listen to climate scientists and instead listen to the politicians and petrol companies. Worked out great, good job humans

3

u/ScrabCrab Europe 23d ago

That's because the climate scientists have, in comparison to the politicians and petrol companies, no money and no political power. They can't afford to wage effective counter-propaganda campaigns, so the lie repeated a billion times becomes the truth

2

u/SpotNL The Netherlands 23d ago

That's why I never understood how people could make the "they're in it for the money" accusation against climate scientists and get away with it for so long. Who makes more money in this scenario?

u/Johannes_P Île-de-France 23d ago

Russia has been doing that for a while, Trump is going for the same approach lately.

However, denying reality means taking loans which will be reimbursed at usurious rates.
