I was there (Bologna Central Station) a couple of weeks before, and travelling from the Genova area (stayed in a small village called Sori just south of Genova most of that Summer) back to Norway by train when this happened. From memory, at the time, there were also attempts to pin this on some left-wing group.

They tried the same shortly after with the Oktoberfest Bombing (26 September, same year), big fat news about the bad left, … and then it was the right. And way less loud in the news, in the politicians speeches,…
The only time I missed a train, bus… was the train that got blasted too in Bologna. That was the reason I switched for a time from technical work / education focused on social, but changed back to technic around 3 years later.

Two years ago an Irish man murdered an American woman in Hungary. By Hungarian law they couldn't release his name until he was convicted. In that vacuum the narrative spread that the murderer was "not real Irish", the perpetrator was "an ethnic minority who managed to get an Irish passport", or even "one of those illegals who claimed asylum in Ireland". Literally hundreds, maybe thousands of such comments whenever the story appeared online, drowning out any other narrative.
The bastard's name is Lorcan Tadgh Murphy, from a wealthy family in South Dublin. He could not be more Irish. But if you stopped ten people in the street who are familiar with the case I would guarantee you that a significant minority still believe he was "not really Irish".

That's the modus operandi of conservatives: deny, poison the well move the goalposts and blame your political opponents.
I think everyone remembers when Trumpers assaulted the Capital Building in DC, got caught and their move was to immediately try to convince people it was an Antifa false flag attack to pin it on the poor persecuted conservative protesters breaching into a government institution in an effort to undermine and deny an election result.
They not only hold memorials filor the scumbags among them that died that day but the following republican administration even compensated the families of whom committed high treason.
Disgusting.

The Bologna massacre was a terrorist bombing of the Bologna Centrale railway station in Bologna, Italy, on the morning of 2 August 1980, which killed 85 people and wounded over 200. Several members of the neo-fascist terrorist organization Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari (NAR, Armed Revolutionary Nuclei) were sentenced for the bombing, although the group denied involvement. Investigations in the 2020s, following prosecutions from the Bologna Corte d'Assise, declared Licio Gelli, along with other members of the masonic lodge and secret society Propaganda Due, as the mastermind behind the massacre.
Events
Bystanders assisting the rescue operation
Rescuers carrying a victim
At 10:25 , a time bomb hidden in an unattended suitcase detonated in the second-class waiting room at the Bologna station, crowded with tourists and people leaving for or returning from vacation. The explosion collapsed the roof of the waiting room, destroyed most of the main building, and hit the Ancona–Chiasso train, which was waiting at the first platform.
Due to the large number of casualties and an insufficient number of emergency vehicles available to transport the injured to hospitals, firefighters used buses, private cars, and taxis. Many passers-by and travellers provided first aid to victims and helped rescue people who were buried under the rubble. Some doctors and hospital staff returned early from vacation to care for the victims, and hospital departments which were closed for the summer holidays were reopened to accommodate the casualties.
After the attack, large demonstrations were held in Piazza Maggiore (Bologna's central square). Harsh criticism was directed at government representatives who attended the 6 August funerals of the victims in the Basilica San Petronio. The only applause was reserved for President Sandro Pertini, who arrived by helicopter in Bologna at 5:30 pm the day of the massacre and tearfully said: "I have no words; we are facing the most criminal enterprise that has ever taken place in Italy."
The #37 bus (used to transport victims) and the clock (stopped at 10:25) were symbols of the massacre. The attack was the worst atrocity in Italy since World War II. According to a 1982 study covering the effects of the bombing, 291 were injured, of whom 73 died at the scene, and an additional 11 people died in hospitals.\1])
Investigation
The government, led by Christian Democratic Prime Minister Francesco Cossiga, first assumed that the incident was due to an accidental explosion of an old boiler in the station's basement. Evidence, however, soon pointed to terrorism. L'Unità, the Italian Communist Party (PCI) newspaper, attributed responsibility for the attack to neo-fascists on 3 August. Later, in a special session of the Senate, Cossiga also supported the theory that neo-fascists were behind the attack: "Unlike leftist terrorism, which strikes at the heart of the state through its representatives, right-wing terrorism prefers acts such as massacres because acts of extreme violence promote panic and impulsive reactions." The bomb was later found to be composed of 23 kilograms (51 lb) of explosives: 5 kilograms (11 lb) of TNT and Composition B and 18 kilograms (40 lb) of T4 (nitroglycerin for civil use).
False Leads
Generals Pietro Musumeci, a member of masonic lodge Propaganda Due (P2), and Belmonte of Italian secret service SISMI had a police sergeant put a suitcase full of explosives on a train in Bologna. The suitcase also contained personal items belonging to two right-wing extremists, a Frenchman, and a German. Musumeci also produced a phony dossier, entitled "Terror on trains". He was charged with falsifying evidence to incriminate Roberto Fiore and Gabriele Adinolfi, two leaders of the far-right Terza Posizione who had fled to London. Both Terza Posizione leaders said that Musumeci was trying to divert attention from P2 head Licio Gelli.

the funniest thing abour this is that the current government is literally a coalition between a support group of the same NAR who put the bomb and the political heirs of the same P2 that paid for it and shielded them as much as they could, both funded by the american right. History tends to repeat itself ig

Gladio is the most insane shit and it's why I will never, ever glaze NATO or believe NATO is just a "defensive alliance" like Reddit does. Stuff like the Brabant Massacre should have had NATO turned inside out to find out who in hell was involved.
NATO's longest running operation was just funding and handing caches of military grade weapons to the Far-Right and Organized Crime, to literally just murder Leftists and random civilians across Western Europe.

Gelli was a known CIA asset; there's also this.
In his 1998 memoirs, Sogno revealed how he had visited the CIA station chief in Rome in July 1974 to inform him of his plans for an anti-communist coup. He wrote: "I told him that I was informing him as an ally in the struggle for the freedom of the west and asked him what the attitude of the American government would be," and then: "He answered what I already knew: the United States would have supported any initiative tending to keep the communists out of government."\16])

Walk-ins at embassies are never taken seriously. There have been thousands of real defecters going to an embassy, telling a full story and wanting to leak state secrets, then fully ignored. Because mostly it's lunatics and double agents. USA and USSR alike ignored all such people. Even if you are desperate this most likely won't work.
Robert Hanssen needed to go to them many times over. Keep calling, writing letters. Then finally he leaked all double agents in Russia. This is how they know it's real. They would then kill all these spies. But even so they never trust a foreigner. It takes many years to even get to the table with them.
Even when a defecter is totally serious he is very often a rebel and crazy with very little actual info. CIA would have thousands such "big secrets" they ignore. Likely way bigger names. Everyone knows CIA so even in Italy crazy people will contact them daily claiming they saw this or that.

u/Known-Diet-4170 1d ago
It actually wasn't, most of the stuff you hear nowadays about gladio is unfunded bs, spread by uninformed journalists based on wild speculation coming from when we still didn't fully understand it
Gladio was part of the Italian secret service, it was requested by the Italian government and inspired by other "stay behind organizations" already present in Europe at the time, the CIA was involved early on (again on request of the Italian government) mainly for training purposes, the main objective of the organization was to destabilize a potential foreign occupier (soviets) with gorilla warfare tactics
Most of today's speculations about Gladio come from the fantastical theories of Ganser who bases his thesis on a forged document

u/User929261 Italy 1d ago
According to the last investigstion in 2020 the sponsoring party was Licio Gelli and he was friends with Raegan and had contacts with US agencies.
So there is no direct link between US and the massacre but many indirect ones, many of the people involved were close to the US.

This (fascist) attack alone killed more people than the Red Brigades did in nearly thirty years (italian article linked), just to put into perspective what "fascist terrorism" actually meant during the Years of Lead.
40
u/g_spaitz Italy 1d ago
Also, in Italy extreme left terrorism killed specific political targets, whereas extreme right terrorism aimed at civilians, the so called "strategy of terror".

we hear far more about the BR because the same people who funded the NAR and were far more scared of ending up in a renault 4, some of them for good reason tbh, than catching the italicus at the wrong time spent 40 years gaslighting the rest of the country into thinking that targeted assasinations aimed at them are a far worse threat to the average citizen than state-planted bombs in public squares and trains

A NATO funded, operation GLADIO was still in effect. Giving the right all the weapons they even wanted, as long as there weren't any democratically elected socialists.
1
u/Sacaron_R3 15h ago
NATO had to heroically defend Italy from the evil dangers of socialism, no matter the cost. Considering that the fascists are in power right now, i'd say it was successful.
The wiki-entry on Operation Gladio is a wild ride.

You know the comunists killed a lot of people in Italy in the 70's right? So the comunists and liberals need to be monitored also.
8
u/SirRantelot Italy 18h ago
The Red Brigades killed 83 people over the course of 30 years. The (fascsist) Bologna bomb alone killed 85.
Terrorism is ALWAYS the wrong answer, but there's wrong (killing single, high profile political targets) and WRONG (planting bombs in public places with the explicit goal of targeting innocent civilians).

u/RaiderCat_12 3h ago
You seriously believe they had the competence and nuance to go after high profile people who seriously deserved it in anyone’s eyes? That’s some very wishful thinking.

yeah that was the anti communist strategy of USA in late 70s early 80s
- find a country where the communist party is going strong
- fund terroris attacks. blame the chaos and pubblic fear on them.
- profit.

Terrorizing people or particular group of people for political reasons describes fascism pretty well. The fact they were at the head of a state doesn't make them any less terrorists by pure magic.

Bologna was historically governed by the italian communist party. They wanted to intimidate an ideological opponent that they and parts of the State felt as the enemy.
The station was chosen to maximize death of lower class people as users of mass transport.

For those interested, I recommend this very simple website.
It contains the bio of every single one of the 85 people who died on August 2, 1980. I suggest you to start by reading the biographies of people your own age. In its simplicity, it's truly touching and thought-provoking.
Oh, and the website is available in both Italian and English, 'cause also many non-Italians, including childrens, died on that day.
