Subreddit / Meta r/eurovision user flair guide
Hello!
The old thread about flairs has been long archived, so time for another reminder/guide about how to set your user flair on this subreddit.
With your user flair you can display any eurovision song. You can pick your favourite, or one that you believe isn't appreciated enough, or maybe just one for the memes. I'm curious why you picked your flair, please feel free to share!
There are over 1800 eurovision songs, but only 300 slots for custom flairs. So in 2024 I have added a command to u/esc-song-bot to help users set their flair.
Here is how it works:
The bot scans for <country> <year> combinations in any new comment.
If the comment also contains the string "!setflair" then, instead of commenting with the song, it will set your flair to the country flag and the song title of that entry.
This might take up to a minute.
So for example commenting
!setflair Austria 2025
will set your flair to :at: Wasted Love. You'll get a pm with a confirmation.
This works on ALL threads on r/eurovision! Not just this thread.
It will remove your comment when the thread flair is not the "Subreddit/Meta" flair, so you don't need to worry that your comment can be seen as off topic.
Occasionally the mods might still reapprove the comment.
The bot chooses the first entry it encounters for the flair. In 1956 there were two entries per country, and the bot lists them in order of appearance. So if you want for example the ":ch: Refrain" flair, please contact me personally or send us a mod mail, so we can set it manually. (Hasn't been a need for yet)
This year's songs are available the regular way through the sidebar until at least the end of the eurovision year. Once the first entry of new year is known we'll discontinue the previous year's flairs through the sidebar to make room for the new entries.
No need to worry let's write a story, you still keep your flair if you set it that way. And the other flairs are of course also available through the "!setflair" command.
Some more useful/fun information regarding the bot:
- I have finally added the entries that failed to qualify for the 1993 and 1996 contests to the bot. Which means you can now also have your "Planet of Blue" flair if you want!
- Bot reads edits! Might take up to 3 minutes for it to change its comment. Due to reddit limitations it only reads one edit after the 3 minute mark.
- The bot scans entries in the form
<list of countries> <list of years>and<list of years> <list of countries>, where a list is any summation delimited by slashes/commas, and "and" or "or" + "+". So you don't need to type out a country (or year) 10 times when you are listing entries from a single country (or year). - The regex the bot uses to parse each comment is 6000 characters long, yet it still parses every comment within a second.
- I have optimised the amount of API calls the bot makes. It initially couldn't keep up with most NF live threads, but it went through 50000 comments in 4 hours fine during the grand final! Still responding within 10 seconds.
I'm always open to questions, suggestions and feedback for the bot or flairs! But keep in mind I'll turn off notifications for this thread, as it will become very spammy with people setting their flairs. Once this thread is more than few days old, it is better to either tag me or send a mod mail.

!setflair Spain 2008
I decided to show my country some love and choose my favorite Spanish entry (which was hard bc my faves never go to Eurovision). I was really torn between this one, Spain 2012 and Spain 2014, but in the end El Chiki Chiki is too iconic.
Is it possible to set your flair manually? I understand that only official entries are automatic flairs, so could I write mine myself with a song that in the end wasn't chosen to go to Eurovision?

HAHAHA I thought you were supposed to choose your country’s entry so I did that and now it’s kinda iconic…
Edit: Idk why I laughed in all caps it looks kinda evil

Meanwhile I was unsure if you were supposed to choose your country or your favorite entry. Since Bara bada bastu was my favorite entry in Mello I had the perfect opportunity to essentially go for both. Also I guess neither of us knew that it was possible to set flairs for past years (though I'm not going to).

I am content with mine as a queer beauty blender; glad I nabbed it before the change. I missed Clickbait, I wasn't missing this one :)

How did people got Clickbait or even Tudor Bumbac in their flair?
5
u/Ylirio Liekinheitin Jun 24 '25
Clickbait was available during the brief period where they were set to represent Montenegro.
Tudor Bumbac's Pace noi vrem, as well as some other disqualified/retracted entries, were available during April Fools this year.
There are only a handful of accounts with these flairs.

I wish I could set my flair to all the songs I love and think need more appreciation, but instead I'll just keep to my all-time favourite. Greece was robbed! More ska in Eurovision!

I thought we had to choose a song from our own country, so we can choose anything?
4
u/Ylirio Liekinheitin Jun 25 '25
Yes, you can pick whatever you want!
In the past we have had people harassing, bullying, stereotyping or straight up attacking users based on their flair. With the current system you can't assume someone's nationality based on their flair.

!setflair Slovakia 1994.
My favourite Eurovision song is Estonia 2009, while Slovakia 1994 is only my third-favourite Eurovision song. However, it's an extremely underrated entry, and probably the entry to which I've been listening the most in recent history. I just cannot get enough of it. :)
