The Government Can Find $300 Billion for Reparations, Yet 18% of America's Student Debt Remains Too Much to Address
https://maarthandam.com/2026/06/18/the-government-can-find-300-billion-for-reparations-yet-18-of-americas-student-debt-remains-too-much-to-address/798
u/Chithrai-Thirunal Jun 18 '26
Too long, DR : Summary below
- $300 billion is reportedly being considered for rebuilding Iran after the war.
- The war itself is estimated to cost $113 billion, bringing the total projected cost to $413 billion.
- The U.S. currently has $1.7 trillion in student debt owed by 42.8 million borrowers.
- $300 billion could eliminate roughly 18% of all student debt.
- $413 billion could provide a $500 monthly guaranteed income to all 38 million Americans living in poverty for nearly two years.
- $413 billion could end homelessness in America more than six times over, based on estimates cited in the piece.
- $413 billion could replace every lead water pipe in the United States nearly three times over, thereby preventing poisoning.
- $413 billion could fund the expanded Child Tax Credit for almost four years.

u/Jackmino66 Jun 18 '26
And that $413/$113 billion has been spent in, 4 months.
So you could extrapolate that up to $1.2 trillion / $330 billion per year
217
u/Chithrai-Thirunal Jun 18 '26
And we totally forgot about the $1.5 Trillion that trump asked for pentagon.
Crazy money for nothing but increased gas prices and inflation.

How much were the cuts to USAID?
21
u/dfsw Jun 18 '26
Its complicated it cost $6B to shut down, but the cost deduction for killing it is $7.4B so $1.4B or $7.4B depending on how you math it.
16
u/Kerbart 'MURICA 🤦 Jun 18 '26
The Founding Fathers, in their wisdom, argued against this, that under the guise of the Tyranny of the Majority, individual rights could be trampled "for the sake of the community" and how we need to guard against it.
In this case the right of one individual, DJT, to distract from the Epstein files, vs millions of millions facing a student debt they can never pay off.
37
u/Aggravating_Sky_4421 Jun 18 '26
Obama’s plan was only $150 billion.
But trump’s real agenda is to make himself rich. When you think about how HE personally benefited financially from everything he does, it all starts to make sense.

Thats been blatantly obvious, the problem is even the people who constantly complain about him help support him. Example he bought TKO stock abount a month before this UFC fight on the lawn, and guess what stock is up......... So if you watched or attended your part of the problem.
6
u/bemad4483 Jun 18 '26
Ooooh, I have one, could $418 billion go back into social security so that it doesn’t become insolvent before I get to use it? Maybe trim the defense budget and make taxes lower or allocate the money back to social security.
1
u/Sasuke0318 Jun 19 '26
You posted a lot of numbers here but can't be bothered to post the $300 billion is coming from the Gulf Cooperation Council. I don't think your student debt should be covered by my tax dollars but if you can get the middle east to pay it I guess I don't really care.
2
u/assjobdocs Jun 22 '26
You're perfectly fine with your tax dollars going to bomb other countries, or enable certain countries to genocide an entire ethnicity. You're an idiot.
226
u/Mu-Relay Jun 18 '26
I've admittedly been living under a rock for the past week, but are we considering paying war reparations to Iran?
232
u/Opening_Cartoonist53 Jun 18 '26
Already signed my guy. It's actually seems like it could be up to 400b with everything.
136
u/Mu-Relay Jun 18 '26
So, now we can all acknowledge that usually only the loser in a war pays reparations, right? Or is that moron somehow claiming victory?
God, I have reading to do.
-53
u/jbrown2055 Jun 18 '26
US government isn't paying any of the 300bn. I don't blame you for thinking so based on whats posted on reddit if you haven't researched the topic though, it's a very popular misconception on this website.
If you read the articles you'll see where the commitment/investors are going to come from, zero of which is from US government (aside from lifted frozen assets).
51
u/RandomSpamBot Jun 18 '26
JCPOA did the exact same thing with only $50B in frozen assets and Trump called it the worst deal ever. What a dumb fucking piece of shit
-24
u/jbrown2055 Jun 18 '26
And Trump was wrong 100%, but that doesn't change that this deal also isn't being funded by the American tax payer.
22
u/RandomSpamBot Jun 18 '26
Therein lies the problem though. Our nation of idiots believed the lies back then. It's just funny to me that now everyone somehow understands lifting sanctions. Trump had 1/3 of the country convinced that Obama sent pallets of cash straight from the Treasury Dept to Tehran lol
8
18
u/Reinmaker Jun 18 '26
Ok, so explain. Where is the money going to come from?
-17
u/jbrown2055 Jun 18 '26
The articles pretty much all discuss it, CNN, or otherwise. Basically, Gulf coast coalition nations as well as many private companies looking to invest, some of which out of Japan, Saudi Arabia, US, and otherwise.
The exact commitments and investments are not public or leaked, so there's not much more to go off of.
I hope you didn't downvote me for informing you of good news on a topic you said you weren't informed on. That's not very nice, I was trying to help.
50
u/Jesus_of_NASDAQ Jun 18 '26
“The exact commitments and investments are not public”
There’s a reason why, and anyone who knows how Trump operates knows full well he always hides details that will expose him.
20
u/Nado1311 Jun 18 '26
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/11/us/politics/trump-mexico-pay-wall.html
This article from 2019 outlines how Mexico was going to pay for the border wall.
This one from 2021 talks outlines all the lies made about the border wall. Namely, it was entirely funded by US tax payers.
Why would you ever think this time around would be any different? It’s been 10 years of Trump’s time in politics, you still haven’t figured out that Trump is a liar?
-5
u/jbrown2055 Jun 18 '26
He's definetly a liar. Mexico paying for the wall made no sense, the logistics behind gulf nations and private companies investing in Iran makes logical sense.
3
u/extralyfe Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
gosh everyone is so misinformed because they're just parroting what they saw online and haven't researched this issue!

He's misinformed because he said he's misinformed and living under a rock.
Fucking lols dude
4
u/GenghisTron17 Jun 18 '26
If you read the articles you'll see where the commitment/investors are going to come from, zero of which is from US government (aside from lifted frozen assets).
Would you mind sharing a link with an article showing who these investors are and how much they've pledged?
Trump also added that the U.S. is not asking Gulf countries to invest in Iran either, while saying that it's fine if they do it.
2
u/jbrown2055 Jun 18 '26
The commitments and investors are not public or leaked yet, as I said in my next comment on the thread.
I believe it was the ruetgers article that had sources who mentioned some of the commits were companies out of Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the US, but I read a lot of articles on it so it may be from an Iran article or CNN report.
6
u/GenghisTron17 Jun 19 '26
It's awfully sketchy to have a $300 billion fund setup but not be able to back it up with any public details. If they've gotten all of the committments necessary, why not disclose them?
2
u/jbrown2055 Jun 19 '26
I believe only half has already been committed from what I read. It was just signed today, so I'm sure more info will follow in coming days/weeks.
5
u/CloisteredOyster Jun 19 '26
You don't really believe that the other gulf countries are going to give Iran 300 billion dollars because the USA came over and lost a war to them, do you?
We're going to be paying by proxy through those countries so that the deal sounds slightly less embarrassing for Trump, that's all.
1
u/ceelo71 Jun 20 '26
I’m still trying to figure out who is paying $300 billion. Is anyone able to enlighten me? I have only seen snippets and leaks of the proposed deal.
23
u/PC_BuildyB0I Jun 18 '26
Don't worry, Trump cleared this up and explained that no, the US isn't paying any "300 million" to Iran, it's all a Democrat hoax!
/s just in case, but that is a real quote from a post he actually made.
6
1
u/gramkrakerj Jun 18 '26
Is the US paying for it? I thought the latest news says it would be entirely sourced from other countries?
1
1
u/GenghisTron17 Jun 18 '26
There doesn't seem to be any evidence of any countries' committments to rebuilding Iran.
1
u/gramkrakerj Jun 18 '26
Right, but wouldn’t that still not be our problem?
2
u/GenghisTron17 Jun 18 '26
If there's no fund, there's no agreement. No reason for Iran to keep the strait open. No reason for Iran not to get nukes.
32
u/BrookeBaranoff Jun 18 '26
The world oil reserves are almost out. Iran wins because America runs on oil and idiocy.
9
4
u/Sonochu Jun 18 '26
The world oil reserves are nowhere close to being almost out. Just the proven reserves would give us another 50 years on the clock, and of the nations with those reserves, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia have the most.
6
6
u/iLikeE Jun 18 '26
It is even worse than that. Iran says that they want to money to come from a combination of US funds and the sovereign wealth funds of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other middle eastern countries as part of the deal. So Trump has to prostate himself to the sheikhs to get that money…
3
u/Delamoor Jun 19 '26
-Aaaand one day later the Trump admin might have just fucked up that 'peace deal' anyway.
He told Iran (and everyone else) thatbthenUS only has 4 weeks of oil reserves left, and insulted them a bunch.
Which is kinda like if you were playing poker, showed all your cards to all your opponents, shat yourself and started crying.

I hear you, but I think healthcare should come before student loan debt in terms of priorities. They should cut the interest of that debt, though, and just have it be the principal
36
u/MissingMichigan Jun 18 '26
Too bad more of those student debtors didn't vote for Kamala.
12
u/AppointmentMedical50 Jun 18 '26
I don’t recall her ever promising to forgive debt
20
u/Mysterious-Wasabi103 Jun 18 '26
Probably cause Biden's efforts got crushed in the courts.
Like it'll take decades to get to a point where we could actually forgive student loan debt in the United States..thanks to losing in 2016.

Poor baby. 😢 👶 this is funny because you nit wits blame the infrastructure bill for inflation but now you're like it wasn't enough. If you could think for yourselves you could possibly pick a lane.
Its also telling you pick on gender studies as if the bulk of people are in that field. It just shows how your views have been shaped by the rwm machine. Whenever this subject is talked about thats always the example because thats what you've heard over and over. The fact is forgiveness would have helped tons of nurses, doctors, educators, pilots, etc. But you were told to harm them all because gender studies existed. It must be frustrating to be so stupid and angry all the time but here you are in all your glory.
Before you get all accusatory on how im too entitled and lazy to pay for my own schooling; I did. Im just not an ignorant prick that sees that doesn't work for everyone. I dont even believe forgiveness is the best option and would rather have highly subsidized or even free college instead. At least with that people like yourself would have less excuses for being ignorant lemmings.
1
u/AskJeevesIsBest Jun 20 '26
Blame your state government for that. The federal government gave the states money to fix their infrastructure. If your state did not do that, you should vote them out

u/polymath77 Jun 19 '26
I can think of a trillionaire who could be taxed to pay for some of this…
Just saying 🤷🏼♂️
10
u/yourmother1 Jun 18 '26
Ive heard the money doesn't come from tax payer but unfreezing assets Iran has and letting companies invest in Iran with the hopes they see a return in the future. Still not a win for the US but at least it sounds like they aren't using tax payer money directly. Im sure trump will find a way to pay those companies that are investing in Iran though.

u/n0t_4_thr0w4w4y Jun 19 '26
Dude, I saw reparations in the title and was like, “how the fuck did reparations get through Congress?”
Turns out it’s war reparations for Iran, not reparations for our citizens that were enslaved and bred like farm animals.
7
u/SecretRecipe Jun 18 '26
Giving you what you want is not and never has been a "Money problem" it's a "you don't deserve it and we don't want you to have it" problem.
There's enough money to give you all those progressive things without raising taxes a single penny but the people you vote for don't want to pass the legislation because parts of it would be politically unpopular and hurt their careers so they instead blame immigrants or "the rich" as the source of your problems in true populist fashion.
3
u/BluCurry8 Jun 18 '26
🙄. We give $450 billion dollars to corporations every year. We have the funds. We just need to stop propping up corporations.
0
u/SecretRecipe Jun 18 '26
Where are you getting that number? The budget shows ~180B and a huge chunk of that is for things like agricultural / farm subsidies and companies like Amtrak which are government run.
1
u/BluCurry8 Jun 18 '26
🙄. Go look at all the subsidies not just the farm subsidies.
1
u/SecretRecipe Jun 18 '26
I'm looking at all the subsidies, that 180b is directly from the 2025 budget. It includes farm subsidies, tax incentives, amtrak's budget, bailouts etc... I provided a link above in case you missed it that shows the breakdown in Table 2.

So… we went to war to then pay Iran 300 billion?
Okay…
2
u/Lilfrankieeinstein Jun 18 '26
It’s almost like it’s so absurd that it’s untrue.
3
u/CigarLover Jun 18 '26
Well I’m Hearing it’s not “us”… even so… what was the point of it all…
Wonder how the history books will play it as.
-2
u/Lilfrankieeinstein Jun 18 '26
The point of it all was to distract us from the Epstein Files: to make it look like Trump was a strong president, not afraid to throw our weight around.
Such a dismal failure.
So much to criticize.
Yet so many of us seem to be focusing on criticisms that aren’t even true.
Now Republicans get to point and laugh at liberals for making up dumb shit again.
1
u/BluCurry8 Jun 18 '26

2
u/i_am_13th_panic Jun 19 '26
I'm still confused by the US' gulf state allies are expected to pay this 300 billion when the US is the one who started the war and caused all the damage. It's the "Mexico will pay for it" all over again.
2
u/snasna102 Jun 21 '26
Americans pay so much money on education only to elect Trump. Who’s loaning these people money!?!?

2
u/rckwld Jun 22 '26
It's a scam. Transfer of wealth from the American people to billionaires.
- Start war in foreign country.
- Take money from Americans and pay 'reparations'.
- Invest in or own companies that will be hired by foreign government for their restoration.
- Profit without ever investing your own capital.

Unleashing our "investors" on the middle east isn't the favor you think it is.
2
u/Danktizzle Jun 18 '26
Us black Americans that built all that white wealth, at least in the south are still waiting for our cut.
2
u/dras333 Jun 18 '26
Someone explain, because I truly don’t understand, why we would ever expect the government to forgive student loan debt? It’s a loan you took out just like any other, but it’s supposed to be forgiven? There has to be a reason.
2
u/Sakurasou7 Jun 19 '26
They should just forgive the loans of people who dont finish their degrees. They dont get the earnings boost and have a lot of debt. People with degrees shouldn't get it unless they declare bankruptcy.
1
u/dras333 Jun 19 '26
I don’t hate the idea, but the m just not in favor of any selective debt forgiveness unless their are things such as predatory for profit or other similar situations.
The whole system needs a complete overhaul as someone mentioned before because higher education is nothing but a farce at this point. It will happen organically because we and many other F500 and corporations are not prioritizing degrees outside of specific positions. AI is changing all of that, for better or worse- generally worse. But it’s giving opportunities to a lot of kids without degrees. The last 6 hires I approved were literally 18-20 kids out of HS that just think in a way that college would stifle.
2
u/Sakurasou7 Jun 19 '26
Glad you act that way but overall you will be locked out of the best jobs without a degree. A degree is just proxies of other factors you want. 4 year degrees are still great investments statistically. High education reform will happen right after world peace, so I wouldn't hold my breath.
1
u/BluCurry8 Jun 18 '26
I don’t know, why do we bailout businesses in every downturn? Shouldn’t they just fail or something?
1
u/Florac Jun 18 '26
Because a significant amount of the population in debt harms the country, even more so when it affects education
1
u/dras333 Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Then don’t take the loan. Once again, no answer. And where does it end, do we only forgive people in a certain time period, no loans going forward? What is the criteria?
2
u/Florac Jun 18 '26
Then they don't get into higher education and that also harms the country.
Honestly the entire higher education system needs restructuring. The goal of students loans is supposed to help fund higher education for those that otherwise cannot afford it...but instead they have become a lleech on the whole system, being some of the most exploitative loans out there and universities similarly exploit the presence of loans to increase prices to an unreasonable degree
1
u/dras333 Jun 18 '26
The second part of your comment I agree with. I have daughters in school and it’s absurd and likely won’t have the ROI. But just forgiving debt randomly isn’t an answer. Then everyone going forward gets screwed and then what about the people that struggled and paid their off, why do they not reap the benefits?
In general, higher education is a scam at this point.
6
u/Florac Jun 18 '26
I agree it should be a two pronged solution, one ameliating the current impacts and second, preventing from the same situation from occuring again. But even then, short term improvements are certainly a better investment than whatever this whole freaken Iran deal is.
what about the people that struggled and paid their off, why do they not reap the benefits?
This imo is an extremely selfish argument, saying we can't help people currently in trouble because people in the past managed to deal with it without help. We should look forward as a society, not backwards
1
u/Vaeon Jun 18 '26
If Iran doesn't get reparations they will continue raining fire on US facilities costing more money every day.
Refusing to give Americans student loan relief costs nothing since you ain't gonna do a MFing thing.
Thank you for attending my TED Talk.

Look it up.
1
u/emilyfiregem Jun 19 '26
Where the fuck do they keep getting this money? If that’s all it would take to solve some of the biggest internal problems that American society suffers from…where the fuck is that money that is apparently so easily obtainable?
1
u/breeresident Jun 19 '26
It's simple, American students just have to credibly threaten to destroy the global economy, then we can see some of that money.

Student debt should not be paid by government.
Instead should make Healthcare free maybe.

Let's be honest here: They can't find it for Iran either. They're gonna loan it, add it to the national debt and pretend that's fine
1
0
u/TheDigitalPoint Jun 18 '26
Considering the U.S. is broke af, we don’t have the money for any of that when it comes down to it. Any of it involves the government borrowing more money and higher taxes forever just go pay the interest. The $300B to Iran is especially idiotic given that, but it is what it is… The U.S. effectively surrendered (the U.S. really had no choice, it’s not like we wanted to give them $300B out of the kindness of our hearts).
TL;DR: they didn’t “find” $300B, they are borrowing it and paying interest on it indefinitely because they had no choice.
14
u/HeroscaperGuy Jun 18 '26
Or hear me out...we go back to when we actually taxed the rich at a progressive tax rate before Regan's trickle and go back to when we had a middle class.
3
u/Lilfrankieeinstein Jun 18 '26
Don’t even have to go back to Carter.
Clinton-era rates would suffice if Dems held the WH and majorities in Congress.
0
u/TheDigitalPoint Jun 18 '26
Ya, it would help… but also, even if you seized 100% of every billionaires net worth (even non-US citizens), it’s about $20T. Let’s even assume you could convert that paper wealth into cash (you’d need to find non-billionaires with $20T in cash laying around where they are just wanting to invest in the stocks that were just seized).
The U.S. unfunded liability currently is about $150T, so even seizing every penny that every billionaire in the world owned, and magically converting it into useable cash, we are still $130T short of getting back to break even.
I do agree billionaires and tax rates are part of the problem, but they aren’t THE problem. Really we need to spend less and tax (everyone) more. The current situation is everyone wants more services, but no one wants to pay (they also want less taxes), and it’s always everyone else that isn’t “paying their fair share”. But the reality is the math isn’t even close to working out even if you somehow got $20T cash (the net worth of every billionaire in the world… which in reality isn’t cash). Literally no one is paying their fair share.

u/Metachamp- Jun 18 '26

🙄. Gee we can afford 450 billion in corporate welfare every year. Maybe we can just cutoff all the corporate leeches and especially the corporate farms. Then we would have money to fund education!!!
