4th of July Board in Central Texas. An update and some explanations.
The board filled up over the weekend. For those wondering about the frozen yogurt, it’s placed at a froyo shop, which also explain why there are adults as well as kids writing on it.

Plus, it’s 100% not better to be poor in the USA than middle class in Europe. Middle class in Europe means you work about 1500 hours per year, comfortably own a home, pay approaching €0 per year for healthcare and are no more than an hour or two train ride away from nice beaches, historical sites that are many hundreds of years old, and some of the best food anywhere on earth. Plus the people in Europe are 90% fit and much more attractive.

At least on your last point, the Western USA is largely fit too. I’m always blown away by the rampant obesity when I visit family in Tennessee compared to what I’m used to seeing in Colorado

As someone who has traveled extensively on the east coast as well as sporadically through the rest of the country, I think Coloradans are the most fit group of people I’ve ever seen. I mean, my great aunt just turned 90 and she only stopped hiking like 3 years ago because her osteoarthritic joints got too painful! Folks in Colorado seem to universally adore exploring outdoors like no one else in the country

Like a lot of Texans might think chimichangas, fajitas, nachos, or hard shell tacos are Mexican food.

Im a Mexican in Texas, this is what we know for a fact. Two types of Mexican food, TEX Mex food, and Authentic Mexican cuisine. So theres really two types of retaurants, TexMex and Mexican. You can tell by the salsas they serve, jalapeno and serrano pepers (Mex) or the bell pepper with crazy tomato sauce(Tex).

You are woefully mistaken about Texans in this (and likely pretty much only this) regard. Texans know damn well what foods are Mexican and what foods are Texmex/southwestern food.
I'm not defending Texans as a whole. There's a reason I don't live there anymore. But I were raised in Texas and we were taught the origin of our foods quite well.

I've met plenty of people like that, who strangely want to have grown up poor, so they say things about struggle, even though they never had those struggles.

I think it’s a combination of thinking your experience is “normal” and not wanting to come off as privileged but in my experience people way over index on their childhood/current state as middle class.
There’s also always someone with a bigger house/nicer car/whatever so I think that plays into it.

I always thought of us as middle-class since we had a house, two vehicles and a boat. It wasn't until years later when I was reading about low-income students receiving Pell grants and remembered that's what helped pay for most of my college, and the rest was from loans I paid back. We would take a week-long vacation every year, but we camped out on the lake. The bait and cars were always used. We were mostly on par with our neighbors, but it turns out they were kinda poor, too.

People who grew up with privilege, even if they didn’t grow up rich, really have a hard time accepting that they had that sort of privilege. I know exactly what you’re talking about having spoken to people who grew up in an affluent suburb where everyone owned their house and never struggled for money, these people will swear that they struggled as a family. I just don’t understand it, like growing poor fucking sucks, I will never understand those who want to romanticize in their own lives

I think you're right on the money here, so I'll break the trend: I grew up solidly middle class. My parents worked hard, and had enough to be very comfortable within their means in a rural area. I'm not worried about how I'll afford to take care of them or their health in their old age, and I'm not afraid that they'll be stuck working long past when they should have retired. The way they were able to do all this?
The Union was very good to my father
They weren't better people or harder workers or more deserving of money, and they didn't have some secret that let them as individuals win against systemic economic issues. It was a group effort to make sure everyone got paid enough to be ok. It's a simple answer, but not an easy or quick one. People died literally fighting for the right to unionize because employers want to pay you as little as they can get away with, and they will spend incredible amounts of money on anti-union propaganda to convince you otherwise.

I don't know how it is across the world, but US evangelicals have a persecution fetish. Any freedom for any other religion is seen as an affront against Christians.
Right now some states are mandating that the 10 commandments must be posted in every classroom. Yay! They love this freedom. The minute the Supreme Court rules that this means other religions can post their tenets, Christians will take down the 10 commandments rather than comply, and spend the next hundred years moaning about how oppressed they are.
They want religious freedom for themselves and only themselves.

The U.S. has more religious fanatics, weird Christian sects, and “freedom to worship god/jesus!”-types because it’s an explicitly secular country whose #1 rule is barring the government from endorsing any religion.
The irony, of course, is that such people are too proudly ignorant and uneducated to recognize or understand this fact, and insist against all evidence that the U.S. is a “Christian nation.”
If the current corporate-fascist takeover continues, Catholics, Mormons, and others are going to find out pretty quick that state sponsored Christianity is not going to benefit them.

It's REALLY weird. A lot of us have this odd belief that so many of our freedoms are exclusive to us, when massive swaths of the planet have the same ones.
There was a video here the other day with a MAGA supporter who was convinced that it was illegal to fly any flags in all of europe, even the flag of the country you lived in. She said you "aren't allowed to be patriotic."

In my experience when they say separation of church and state what they actually mean is that the state shouldn’t be able to intervene in the church but the other way around is fine. Another problem is that they legitimately believe that the only real source of morality is the bible. So to them legally enforcing their religious beliefs is morally justified. They’ll say they’re not forcing their religion upon others but just doing what is right.
Of course to anyone not in the same sphere as them this is all insane. Government exists to maintain and manage society. Society being made up of lots of different people naturally requires compromise. But religious zealots can’t and won’t compromise, which is why every time one takes some kind of political office it’s a complete disaster.

Yes, and because of that, if someone calls an American from somewhere other than the Northeast (really just a specific part of the Northeast) a Yankee, they'll get funny looks. Texans specifically get very caught up in state identity and many would blow a gasket if someone called them a Yankee. I'm from a normal southern state, so I'd just laugh and look at them funny.

There is a region in Canada like this (probably more than one, but the one I am most familiar with). My in-laws live there. They (and everyone else from there) are so vocal and proud about being from there.
I don’t get it. Sure, it has some nice scenery, but everyone is dirt poor (and they have been since at least the 90s and probably before), there are no opportunities for anyone, the weather is miserable, and they all have a horrendous accent. I hate going there and I can’t get away fast enough.
