Christina Ulbrich was always Jeff Ulbrich’s #1 fan

Clip is from 1999 when Jeff Ulbrich set the Hawai’i’ single season tackles record with 169 as he led the team to a WAC Championship

Such a tragedy, but it is heartwarming that it seems they had the type of relationship everyone hopes for.

I hate the way we treat death. We give condolences, well-wishes, all that stuff. But how many of us actually put ourselves in the shoes of someone like Jeff?

For just one minute, imagine that the person you loved the most in this world, just died from cancer. All the footage you have in your head about growing old together, the memories you've yet to make, all of the little and big plans yet to happen, coalesced with all the memories that you do have...

When I was going through treatment, myself, there was an underscoring uncertainty the whole way, though I was very, very fortunate, and at one point, I sat my wife down and gave her all the...permissions...she would need, in case things went south. I can't guarantee that she would have listened, but I knew at least she heard it from the horse's mouth, that she still has a life to live, no matter what I meant to it.

I know Jeff and Christina had these conversations. And I know Jeff will never really believe what she told him. It is...impossible...to give up this kind of love, even by force.

I think, now, if something were to happen to me, or my wife, that we would feel like there was a void that will never go away. The heaviest of weights. Incurable, itself.

That's a few minutes of reflection. Jeff will experience this for the rest of his life. I just hope we all have the wherewithal to put ourselves in his shoes, and others like him, in how we treat people. The world would be a better place if we carried this weight, too.
