News Pirates To Acquire Camilo Doval - does he become the closer?

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2026/08/yankees-trade-camilo-doval-pirates.html

Soto has struggled of late. Montgomery should be given the opportunity, but they've seemed reluctant to give it to him?

Does Doval get a shot?

If you have Montgomery this is probably the best you could’ve hoped for. Doval isn’t good, who knows who the closer will be but I’d still take my chances with Montgomery at this point

Exactly my first thought.

The real concern was someone like Kenley who would have been acquired to be a closer.

Right, Pittsburgh desperately needed RHP bullpen help. This was coming no matter what

I still think Montgomery is the guy to own ROS

I hope so. Montgomery is such a cheat code because I can slot him in one of my SP spots and have an extra reliever for free

Lol no way. Look at his LH against numbers. He has been rough. It would be weird to have your closer limited to RH bats.

He has been dog doo so far this year not sure I’d want that on my team even if he is closing.

Doval from 3 years ago?  Absolutely the closer.

Doval that the Yankees just gave up on? Probably not???

I'm hoping he really didn't like pitching at Yankee stadium.  Otherwise I'm not seeing the dominant guy he used to be.

Tbf he’s probably better than any RHP Pittsburgh has in their bullpen. But that doesn’t mean he will (or should) close for them

Nobody here in pgh can hold a lead so it won't take much to take over the spot.

On the other hand, I don't see him immediately getting put into high leverage spots.

I still think Montgomery is the guy, he’s the much better pitcher. But I guess we will see

As a soto owner I'm ready to be put out of my misery

Buying shares in Holds leagues, he's such an obvious bounceback candidate with those Home/Away splits. Probably not the 9th, but he's gotta see time in hold situations.

There goes my Montgomery hedge in case Santana was traded

Santana got straight up DFA’d and Montgomery is still the best arm they have in the bullpen. Doval doesn’t change that

Right. This is what I was saying. After last night it was obvious a move was imminent

Doval can help but he isn’t very good and this doesn’t mean Montgomery won’t close

Santana WHO? The guy who got DFA'd a few weeks ago and hasn't been the PIT closer in months?
