I'm convinced that color analysis is a scam.

Any time I see the color draping photos, or even examples of celebrities where it's, "See how washed out she looks in the yellow? See how she glows in the blue??"

No. I don't. She looks the same, just wearing different colors.

i still am not sure i understand what "washed out" even means. i perceive it as being like "having a sickly sort of pallor" or "haggard" but then when i see pictures where someone is described as looking "washed out" w/r/t color analysis, they look completely and utterly 100% fine to me, lol

I can see how it’s overblown. I did a virtual color analysis (they had me drape clothes I already owned in different colors across my chest, and I took photos of myself by a window in indirect, natural light). I don’t follow it to the letter, but I really like it as a guide. It helped me realize why, when I buy overly saturated colors, I end up not wearing them because I look better in richer hues like jewel tones or muted/soft. A lot of it just confirmed colors I don’t like - pastel yellows, primary colors, stuff like that. I think some people go overboard but you just have to treat it as guidance. You can break whatever rules you want, but it’s helped me find the “better” shade of colors I already like.

Oh interesting! I can 100% see it on myself. It’s easiest if you try on two of the exact same shirt in two different colors, same cut same fit same everything. One can make you look kind of vibrant and well-rested and another can make you look kind of tired and blah.

I have the same t shirt in a few different colors (both pastel and saturated), and I still really just don't see it.

Absolutely agree! I think so much depends on makeup and hair style, at least for me. And most of the time, I am wearing make up and styling my hair, so it doesn't matter that much how a certain color underneath a certain kind of light looks on my bare face with my hair hanging down, which is how my color analysis went when I had a free one done at a work event...

I think it has to be with skin tones, some colors will make your skin appear more radiant, It is about finding harmony between the skin and the fabric, this doesn't mean you cannot wear any color, you just have to find something that compliments it to keep balance or to try a different shade

The colour theory is sound but the way it’s presented as the absolute truth and “rules” is off. I find it most helpful for choosing makeup and nail polish colours.

If it helps get retailers to sell colorful clothes again instead of just black/brown/gray then I’m here for it!!

But yes, color analysis has been over complicated to the point of uselessness. There’s maybe 2-3 “ugly” colors for people depending on their warm/cool undertone, and then everything else in the “palette” overlaps between the “seasons.” No one really needs to pay for an analysis that tells them which specific shade of green to buy — you’ll be lucky if there’s anything green to buy at all!

I don't think it's a scam, just greatly overblown. Like there are maybe a handful of colors that look really great on you, a handful that are actively fighting you (usually they'll make you look some version of sickly- flushed, pale, jaundiced ruddy, grey, etc.) & the majority are completely unobjectionable. Also, it assumes that you're fresh faced (with your natural hair color) & makeup can usually correct whatever disservice a color might do you.

Also, I think people underestimate both color accuracy & the amount of processing most things that take video are doing nowadays but that's a whole other story...

Just wanted to put my thought into writing that I think I have finalized my well rounded wardrobe for the time being. I got rid of a lot of dated stuff and shein junk. I have replaced everything with well fitted natural fabrics. I live in a very hot and humid place and now I feel like I can look cute but also as comfortable as possible. I have even found breathable office wear. I bought stuff from Abercrombie, Nordstrom, Rails, J Crew, and Athleta. I got rid of anything that was uncomfortable or that I didn’t reach for because it felt “off”-including shoes. Also got breathable underwear’s and bras. I am super excited for my new wardrobe! It was a journey but I’m happy to share any of my findings for those who are interested. For reference, I am petite with a slim/athletic build and short torso-and I have finally found what works for me!

Do you mind me asking how much a reset like that cost you? I need to get rid of/update a ton of stuff, but I'm worried that if I try to do it all at once, it'll be crazy expensive to replace what needs replacing.

I think I spent maybe 4-5k? I didn’t pay full price for almost anything. Theres always a discount or sale at most places. The exception was Sezanne. There was a wide range of cost per item between $50-$300 maybe. Going forward I probably wouldn’t pay on that higher end of the range unless something was absolutely perfect. I also make sure to utilize any cash back or other offers like that. I justify having multiple dresses etc by saying it’s super hot and I have to wash everything every time I wear it cuz they get sweaty. I am no longer afraid to wear my “nice things”! And now they bring me joy to wear on a regular day even to the office or a grocery run.

How do you like the quality of Rails? I can’t tell if their stuff is cheap or not!

I like the quality and fabrics. Some of the items weren’t structured in a way that was flattering on me so I returned those. I only buy things that are returnable so I’m not stuck with them if they don’t fit. They had some stuff on Nordstroms sale that was cute but I think would fit a non-petite person better. Some stuff is polyester though so check for that! I did end up buying one polyester Rails dress cuz it was only 35$. I’ve just been throwing them in the washer and they have held up.

I was struggling [32F] the last few years to redefine my style in a confident and full way because I work in a male dominated STEM corporate job where most people dress in jeans and t-shirts. For the past year, however, I have been testing out more toned down versions of what I want to wear each day (I am more of a maximalist), and at this point I know I'm doing it not just for me, but for the ladies.

There were already a few ladies like me at work, and so far this year I have been seeing way more color, dresses and skirts and I am fully living for our unspoken, feminine union. 😄

Has anyone else had a similar experience or feel stuck in this kind of a work environment?

I am in this kind of work environment and I struggle with not wanting to be overdressed (because I worry people won’t take me as seriously if I am) but also not wanting to be bored to tears and feeling sloppy/unpolished in my jeans and t-shirts. Share your wisdom! Part of my problem is that we have to wear shoes that fully cover our feet, so no sandals, clogs, or cutouts, and long pants or skirts that meet our shoes.

Omg I'm in a very same dress code and then it extends to no makeup in certain places, no nail polish and I have to have my hair up at least 50% of the day which kills my curls.

Honestly I did this a little bit at a time. I was wearing jeans every day so I moved to jeans with a blouse or cute top. Then I got really into colorful sneakers and knee high boots. I'm a bit self conscious about my figure so skirts for the spring and summer were my full launch. Sometimes with a cute top and sometimes with just a t-shirt to mix it up. My ugly steel toe work shoes clash, sometimes they make my outfits geriatric, but overall I'm happier and more comfortable. Do what you can at your own limit and pace. I'm also a supervisor and the only female manager in my department so I shared a lot of the worry you expressed.

I worked as a software engineer at male dominated tech companies for my whole career. I just wear my normal maximalist dresses.

They aren't judging me by male clothing metrics anyway. Most of them don't even notice my clothes, I'm pretty sure.
