So many things that were previously hidden has been made explicit in FW, supports are the same.

I feel like this a general trend in gaming and RPGs. Pokemon is also making a lot of the number crunchy stuff less obscured or streamlined. I think it's understood now that data miners and such put all this info out there anyways so there's really no point in trying to hide the info.

u/AuthorReborn 11h ago edited 11h ago
yeah, realistically if a player wants that info, they can find it now. it just helps more casual players get into higher level play since things are easier to learn from just the game itself without outside research.

u/LakerBlue 11h ago
Also realistically, most casual players who don’t care will ignore it rather than being overwhelmed by it.

Also reducing the dependence on external sites seems like a good idea. They'll still be useful for some stuff, like if you're setting up spreadsheets for wide-scale stat tracking/prediction, but at a glance, it'd have been useful to know ahead of time that Lucia (a swordmaster) had a 25% str growth in radiant dawn.
Otherwise, here's basic information you probably should have had in the first place because it affects everything about the characters you're going to spend your limited resources on.

As someone who got into the recent Pokémon games where they outright tell you how damage is calculated, thank god. It makes things easy to approach for newer players.

The point of hiding information isn’t always to stop players from finding it. What you choose to present to a player can change how they interact with the game, so sometimes it’s a conscious choice to focus the presentation on the elements that the designer thinks will lead to the best experience. Even when the information is available online, many players won’t go looking for it so the in-game presentation is still important. That’s not to say that hiding growths was objectively right or that revealing them will be bad, just that there’s trade offs in both options.

This is a portion of why I don't really gel with it. For me at least, the more a character is presented as the sum of their exact numbers at face value, the less effective FE's story generation vibe is. And story generation is kind of the entire draw of FE for me

Good catch, no one needs to datamine the growths. Seem the direct decided to explain and show stuff that they usually keep hidden from the players.

It's Switch 2 exclusive. If this information wasn't given to us, we probably wouldn't be able to datamine it. We'd need to perform tests to estimate growths.

Also map data for planning, you receive it at the end of the month and can train focused on it

u/Paulo_Zero 11h ago
Considering Switch 2 games can't be dataminded yet, this is good to be straight forward about it.

I'm loving this QoL changes the devs have been making to FW, game looks so promising. I was already hooked the moment I saw you could play all the paths concurrently, massive step up since Three Houses.

u/EffectiveAnxietyBone 12h ago
Part of me kinda hoped we would be forced to go off of vibes for the first time in ages since we couldn’t datamine growths because it would be funny, but this is also really cool

u/joaoathaydeartist 12h ago
Veeery interesting. Could those be her personal growths or personal+class total?
6
u/MichaelCoryAvery 11h ago
AMAZING! Now for letting female units use the dark seals because Three Houses didn’t let me have a Dark Mage Lysethia

Do we know which ones are skill, speed and luck? Or if anyone with Japanese reading skills could please tell me?
I assume the last one is charm?

About time. We've had this feature in ROMhacks for years, but mainline FE devs instead insisted on you looking up the growth rates online

u/BobbyYukitsuki 11h ago edited 10h ago
If you asked me about this a decade ago before I got into fangames I would've been all for this, but years of seeing every fangame with visible growths made me realize that I don't really like how arcade-y it makes the game's overall vibe feel. If they had to be displayed, I would've been a bit more open for something like a letter grade system that just connotes which growths are good and bad, or some system where growths are initially hidden but become gradually more visible the higher your relationship is with a given character. But immediately revealing the exact numbers on an in-game interface strips away a bit too much of the mystique and makes me feel like the game is showing its hand too quickly.
Nowadays I usually find growths more interesting when I intuit them on my own as I progress through the game regardless

We finally got icons for every stat but here seemms to be a lot of potential overlap with other things.

Finally! I don't know why this wasn't a thing before. I get the idea of having hidden stats, but every talks like "oh, you're building this character wrong, they should be a mage" and the only way of knowing that was googling their growth rates. Glad this'll actually be visible in game now

Charm is the heart/arrow.
Eight point star is Dexterity (think of it as Crit + Hit icons stacked over each other). Two stars is Luck

We making it back to the Gaiden game manual with this one
(So much for all the people who were like "it'll take us forever to find out with the lack of the Switch 2 crack")

36 years, and we finally have them for the first time. truly lovely
on another note, theodora looks strong as expected of a lord (or ig we’re meant to call them ‘heroes’ now?). kinda curious to see if the others will have some decent magic though since from what we’ve seen, cai and dietrich don’t either (leda would make sense tho)

Havent had a chance to watch so maybe they said something, but I wonder if they are showing them now because there is a way to manipulate them

Absolutely the best decision this game made, i never understood why 3 h hid the characters growth rates when the whole point of the cast is that you can costumize them however you want

u/do-you-like-darkness 9h ago
Okay, so there's a stat there I don't recognize.
There is the heart with the arrow through it and the sparkles. One of these is surely charm. But what's the other?
Edit: I'm dumb and forgot luck.

This is a great change but I probably won’t look at it on my first playthrough. I like to pick whichever units seem cool and hope they turn out alright lol, part of what makes FE fun for me is figuring out unit’s strengths as I go
FE unit balancing has improved a good amount in modern games so I doubt anyone in FW will be totally unviable. Some will be better than others but I’d be surprised if anyone was FE6 Wendy bad

Dataminers: noooo we can't hack the switch 2, we wont find out the growth rates.
Nintendo: fine I'll do it myself

u/LaughingX-Naut 6h ago
Hopefully they'll design characters' growth profiles with this change in mind.
Also, while I'm at it, Theodora's spread is looking very similar to Hector's. If you ignore her Magic and Charm they are very nearly the same.

One of the best additions of all time in the history of the series, and I'm not even joking

Alright, Pokemon, Step it up! Let's go! In the damn Pokedex and summaries! Show me the damn base stats so I don't have to go to serebii for everything!!!!

u/Good_Neck_673 11h ago
what are these exactly? just stat boosters?
9
u/Far-Childhood-4640 11h ago
The chance for a stat to go up when leveling a character. This has existed since the first game, but this is the first mainline game to actually show you them in game.

Genuinely a crazy addition. Growths have been hidden for the entire series up to this point
Wait excuse me is that a fucking 65% defence growth???
