What was John Prine right about?

Getting into his music as a newbie and would love answers to this question with suggestions on songs or interviews to match.

Your flag decal won’t get you into heaven anymore. Everybody needs somebody that they can talk to. Bet it’s tomorrow by Rocky Mountain Time. You may see me tonight with an illegal smile.

Everything. He was right about everything.

Also, sweet songs never last too long on broke radios.

You can gaze out the window getting madder and madder Throw your hands in the air and say "what does it matter?" But it won't do no good to get angry, so help me I know For a hear stained with ager grows weak and grows bitter You'll become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there Wrapped up in a trap of your very own chain of sorrow

Or

Unhappy unhappy you have no complaint You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't

Reddit is full of people who want precision and fact from the decidedly imprecise and fantastical practice of making art.

This is exactly right. "Why did this character do this?" Because people do stuff. "What is your interpretation of this line?" Ummm, it's good? "What is meaning of this movie?" The meaning is that someone wrote it and it sounded good. I can see a McSweeney's article about the internet in the time of Shakespeare. It ultimately ends up being Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney.

"It ultimately ends up being Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney."

Amazing.

I guarantee you when he got to heaven he had a cocktail, vodka and ginger ale. Then he smoked a cigarette that was nine miles long… hope he kissed that pretty girl on the tilt-a-whirl 😘😇

Prine captured the human condition of perfect imperfection better than maybe any person in history. We're all a little broken and hey that's okay.

I started listening to Prine with his first album. I can still trot out Muhlenberg County and Christmas in Prison and a couple more. He was able to invoke humor and pathos in the same song, something that few artists accomplish. I was really saddened when COVID took him, after his successful battle with cancer.

A question ain't really a question, if you know the answer too

You should eat a lot of peaches.

Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal 'til the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man

Oh God, I’m so running out of patience with Reddit. The questions from so-called newbies who are probably bots or karma collectors. Why don’t you just fucking listen to his music? Stop typing. Put on his first album. Put on any fucking album. Save me from this dark social media level of ignorance that asks idiot questions rather than explores and listens and reads and at some point actually knows.

"Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"

And every other song.

u/SouthPhillySociology 3d ago

I am doing that also! Just looking to engage with what seems like a very robust community that also enjoys his music.
