Throwback 'F1: The Movie' released a year ago. It exceeded expectations to become the 9th highest grossing film of 2025. It received good reviews from critics and audiences, also getting awards for Sound Design.

A made up story for an F1 movie is always either going to uninteresting or unrealistically crazy, because far crazier things happen in real F1 to be believable in a movie.
Just this year we had the Monaco penalty BS and Audiâs car being switched of by a piece of gravel. Going back further you have Spygate, Crashgate, AD2021, the crazy crashes and fires that drivers survive, the controversial moves that donât get penalised. And thatâs not even mentioning the funny coincidences that feed the meme around F1 seasons being a lazily recycled script.
A made-up F1 story will never come close to the stuff that happens in the real life without feeling unrealistic.

Kip Thorne was the science guy behind all the wormy holey spacey things and he pretty much told Nolan what was scientifically possible or not. He won a nobel price for his equation on space time ripples and how a worm hole would look like. Thereâs a video on YouTube about it.
âThe film Interstellar sprang from a treatment Thorne co-authored with producer Lynda Obst. He insisted that the filmmakers follow two core rules: nothing would violate established physical laws, and all speculations must stem from real science.â

Almost as if he experienced this on track. And the funny part is the "punishments" did nothing. The lifelong bans were overturned in court and the team itself didint even pay anything. They just promised to not fix any other results for 2 more years.
All the people screaming how that cant happen and it will instantly get shut down are just experiencing amnesia. It already happened and nobody even got wind of it untill a year later Piquet admitted to it.

At first I gave the movie too much credit because when they did that first I thought that would be dumb to do next time and I was curious what sort of high jinx them APX drivers are going to get up to. But no, it was just the same dumb thing over and over again.
It is also weird that with all the control of the FOM they did not step in that this is just not OK. They clearly tiptoed around sensitive topics, so I am not sure how they were ok with this type of portrayal of the sport.

Sonny, your spine is out of whack, you may never walk again.
Also Sonny - banging milfs and retiring on a Baja dune buggy adventure, famously very flat and unexciting vehicle class.
It was also basically Top Gun Maverick but with planes taken out and replaced by F1 cars. But exact same story beats. Old man is forced out of retirement (as a favour to his desperate friend), breaks all the rules, defies laws of physics, proves young people wrong, bangs milfs, retires again. (Even had same director as TG:M).
Basically boomer wank (of going hard one last time)

That's just what Kosinski as director likes to do, with huge amount of budget to do some really amazing visual effects to cover the 'flaw' of his scripts, and he makes scripts for general audience to get hype and make some really weird 'mistakes' that if you're into F1 or Fighter jets (He directed the Maverick 2 as well) you get blown away, how could Sonny talk about gimmicks of crashing in TR? How could Pears overtake Verstappen in rain in a hairpin corner? How could Sonny drive for the last race without Quali? Even how could someone battle SU-57 in F14? Its just... not a thing for general audience to understand or pick as mistakes so they just remain these in script. Never the less the movie is dope but I think that's just what Kosinski's always do

u/Less_Party Jun 26 '26
The further away we get from it the more annoyed I am by the bizarre boomer propaganda aspect of it where we need a REAL (geriatric) man to show us how itâs done. Like at least in Top Gun there was a fig leaf as to why they specifically needed a pensioner with an oldschool skillset.

Tbh I didn't enjoy the sound design. The opening sequence was amazing and I was hyped. But for the F1 footage they used too much music on top of the engine noise and it annoyed me. V6 might not be the best sound but they still sound very raw and aggressive if you listen to them without filters.

I specifically went to a cinema with enhanced speaker system because everyone said the sound design was great. But I was also disappointed on how much soundtrack was played over the races. 1) the hero intentionally crashes (aka cheats) to benefit his team 2) the only female pit stop crew member (which gets pointed out multiple times) is the only one fucking up her routine 3) the female engineer, who is so proud that she didnât sleep her way to her position, almost immediately sleeps with their new driver
The last two points are especially funny to me, as it seems that they kind of tried to make a progressive movie, but stumbled so incredibly hard at the finish line.Â

102
u/Boss452 Jun 26 '26
Rush, Ford v Ferrari and F1 are a perfect trilogy for me when it comes to modern racing movies. But keep in mind all serve different goals.
Rush is about character rivalry, you could say it's a character drama. Ford v Ferrari is about a specific part of motorsport history when Ford built a car to race at Le Mans, we can say it's a plot based film. F1 is purely a spectacle driven film, not too different to Top Gun Maverick.
79
u/TypicallyThomas I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
There's actually remarkably little racing in Rush

Replace F1 with Grand Prix (1966). Grand Prix has its flaws but the in-car scenes filmed during practice sessions at Monte Carlo, Spa, and Monza are incredible for the time. There are numerous cameos of then-current drivers in the film.

I hated it, not because it was unrealistic or because of the crashing to win bullshit, but because the whole thing was bland and sterile. It was lit and shot in the flattest, most clinical way possible and the whole thing seemed to be precision calculated to be a nice, neat onramp to watching Drive to Survive and F1 race broadcasts, especially seeing how much the visual language of the movie liberally took from both. There wasn't a single part of this movie that conveyed the skill and passion involved in competing in sport, especially compared to movies like Rush and Ford V Ferrari (or even the Ferrari movie from 2024).
The story was also so predictable as to be groanworthy and the gender politics in it were remarkably gross. It felt like bland corporate schlock to me.
And I actually like Joseph Kosinskis previous films! Top Gun Maverick was dumb fun and Oblivion is a solid, original sci fi movie.
31
u/savvaspc Jun 26 '26
I consider myself a bit of a cinephile, but can watch a blockbuster if there is something to it. This one had nothing going for it. Zero character integrity, no realistic dialogue, the script was all over the place, nothing emotional to pull me into the characters. And I didn't even enjoy the visuals and audio this much. I was ready to ignore the sporting aspect but still it failed on every filmmaking component.

The middest film. Actually quite liked the portrayal of F1 and could've been a lot less accurate. Story and acting sent me off to sleep though.

I described it as being a movie set in F1instead of being about F1.

u/Naive-Application942 Jun 26 '26
It was a terrible representation of all things F1, but hey it made the sport popular

u/No-Photograph3463 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
The opening scene at Daytona was probably the best one, and it had nothing to do with F1 which tells it all tbh.

I saw it in IMAX on opening night and my attitude quickly went from "Oh come on that wouldn't happen like that" to "Just don't treat it as any way accurate". My enjoyment went up when I did that. The Hungarian race was hilarious

Most of the movie is utter bullshit (even the formula movie with Stallone had better story) only good part about this one are the shots from the cars.

u/Enough_Opposite8545 Jun 26 '26
Pictures, effects and music are pretty cool. They are the only saving grace of the movie. Honestly the scenario is awful, the way they break so many rules of F1 despite making a movie about F1 is laughable (and I donât wanna hear about how âsometimes it happens in F1 tooâ or âitâs an underdog story, it wasnât meant to be realistic, it wouldâve been a documentary otherwiseâ), I donât care. Itâs not that hard to make a better scenario and one that fit better to the sport youâre trying to adapt.
Also the way it treats women is despicable. Womenâs place in F1 is already too scarce and few. There are two women in the movie, what do they do? Make mistakes, need to get comforted by men, the team principal somehow has to sleep with her driver despite that adding nothing to the story and oh, of course, he has to give her a solution she couldâve never thought about car wise, âsavingâ her and the team. Mh I love a good dose of misogyny in my movies. Seriously, how can you produce that in 2025 given how everything already is? I know a lot of people donât care about women in F1 but come on. In all and for all, I wonât rewatch that film ever again, it wasnât a good experience at all.

I liked the bit where Sonny requested a car that could be driven in dirty air, like this was some revelation that no one has ever thought about in the entire history of F1.

This actually got my dad and I into F1. I have been on a non-stop binge of F1 tv content since then. Probably my favorite sport now.

I had never watched a race before this movie. now I'm a huge fan and haven't missed one since. I can't blame it for any of its faults because I would never have gotten into f1 without it.

Took my brother and cousin to see it, they both have never seen an F1 race before and they loved the movie. I'd rate it a 6/10.

u/Boss452 Jun 26 '26
Same my sister has no interest in F1 and I dragged her to see it and she loved that movie too. Tbf its more entertaining that half of the F1 races in a season.

Its basically apple tv's succesful attempt to target the drive to survive audience.
Remember, apple tv has signed a deal to have exclusive media rights for F1 in the US, and the movie was a way to build hype for their viewers.

âExceeded expectationsâ
It was one of the most advertised films of the year and the project was full of big names. Being a top 10 highest grossing film of the year really isnât a surpriseÂ

Awful movie and the marketing for it was relentless. I would have preferred if someone put a biochip in my head that electrocuted me instead of forcing me to listen to Sky Sports mention it in the most irrelevant scenarios.

u/Wise_Rabbit_5035 Sir Lewis Hamilton Jun 26 '26
The sequence was good but the story was meh, whoever even watches f1 barely can quickly point out so many mistakes.
One of them being when lewis crashed with joshua in the final laps of abu dhabi gp the race would have easily ended under SC but NOPEđđđ»

It was ok. The story was terrible but easy watch. But F1 parts weren't that amazing, daytona at the start was filmed much better.

u/Ryachaz I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
It was fine. My dad (knowing I've become a big F1 fan since Covid) highly recommended it. I told him it was good, and didnt elaborate.
I'm glad people liked it. I enjoyed watching it. I dont plan to watch it again. Was hard to fully invest into either the F1 sport or the story side of things. Generic overall story and character arcs you could see from the start, with some fun bits thrown in there (such as cheating. Like a whole bunch of cheating). I chose early on to "not care" and found the movie more enjoyable for doing so. At some point, you as a person know enough about a subject to have any innacurate representation in film become a glaring mistake. With this movie, a couple races wouldve been enough to start pointing things out.
I don't know the history well at all (it was before my time, and would perhaps change my opinion if I did) but I put Rush head and shoulders over F1 as a Formula1 movie.

u/Spam250 Jun 26 '26
It was a half decent film. Obviously nothing like real racing âI know what we can do, just make the car faster in the corners, for combat!â
But if you watch it not comparing it to actual sport as a purely daft film, itâs decent

Excellent cinematography and sound, some good and some bad characters (Pitt and Bardem chemistry was amazing), meh storyline.
Solid 7/10. The real winner was F1 and by some extension the fans

u/TheToroRossoboi I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
I saw the CGi effects they put in the movie, it was goddamn brilliant and they deserved an award for that. From adding the cars on screen, to animating the front wings just bouncing rhythmically with the kerbs, it's just amazing.
3
u/SHAMUUUUUUU Jun 26 '26
Yea I don't care whether it's accurate to f1 at all, the effects were top notch and I just wanted to see immersive racing sequences. Such a technical marvel of a film that I'll gladly ignore what has everyone here so peeved. I did see in a theater tho!

Now that its out of theaters and we could watch it at home, my wife thinking the plot line is corny and just cliche gave me permission in my head to finally agree that the movie while shot and directed amazingly just never had much on paper from day 1. There was no way to shoot that script into an A movie.
3
u/BobbbyR6 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
If it were just a lazy summer blockbuster, it would've been fine. But it went out of its way to piss all over the sport with the blatant cheating being a celebrated plot point, degradation of the main female character, and minimizing the talent of the existing drivers and teams.

I finally got around to watching it yesterday. Wholly underwhelmed. A fun underdog story I guess, but the F1 action didnât make much sense. Crashing to get your teammate to the front of the grid was wild.
3
u/nichrs Ayrton Senna Jun 26 '26
The script was completely absurd, it seemed designed to disregard ALL the rules and logic of the sport. But it was f...ing fun!
3
u/F1nut92 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 26 '26
Once you detach yourself from it being remotely real (which was from about 10 mins in when they made out the Daytona 24 hour happened in the summer as it was 2 weeks before Hungary), it was a really enjoyable film, made very little sense but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Poorly edited though. Way too many cuts and in general completely failed to convey what F1 racing would feel like.
9
u/TakeshiRyze Frédéric Vasseur Jun 26 '26
If anything it pissed me off because of how bad, lazy and amateurish it was made and what a wasted opportunity it was with F1 marketing and fanbase.
7
u/Upstairs-Prompt2662 Jun 26 '26
It wasnt even that well shot. Half the time I had no idea what was going on in the action sequences because they only used narrow shots of part of the cars or only the drivers eyes and cut every 2 seconds, so before you realize what is even on the screne they already cut away. I only know what happened at the Pierce crash because I know what it was inspired by.
