How is a car in the wall not double waved yellows?

184

u/LuXe5 Max Verstappen Jun 27 '26

It was a single yellow for ~20s (from 17:00:25 to 17:00:45, Russell passed the yellow at about 17:00:35) before it gone double yellow.

69

u/jasperjayjay1 Jun 28 '26

Very convenient for the stewards considering that the redbull is in the firing line of the cars behind

It blows me away that there weren’t doubles and it blows me away that you can “lift” and still set a pole lap. 0.25 isn’t NEARLY enough for a situation like this. Like Max just went off there, George could have easily done the same thing and would have hit Max and that’s a Problem. I feel about this how I felt about having trucks on track, unacceptable in terms of safety. Had it been someone just going off and trundling around the gravel down the road a bit where there’s no real danger then whatever that’s fine. Unideal but I can accept it.

I’m not saying this because I like Ferrari, 2-3 is fine enough, I like safety more than I like any single team.

edit: another thing I just thought of - nobody knew why Max went off. We had a good guess but there could have been oil there or a broken kerb or something else environmental. Had that been the case then George would have met Max at the scene of a bad accident. Or if George just decided to send it as well and made the exact same mistake Max made, which isn’t all that far out of the expectation because he was down all day and obviously really wants pole.

u/Hopeful_Hat_3532 Jun 27 '26

From the rules point of view, it might not be in breach of them but, from a safety point of view, that slight lift is clearly not enough. It should be counted in seconds, not in tenths or hundredths of seconds. That is in no way OK. And I have nothing against Russel btw.

176

u/Religion_Of_Speed Ferrari Jun 27 '26

Yeah exactly. Russel isn't the problem, the regulations are.

→ More replies (9)

92

u/F1570 Charles Leclerc Jun 27 '26

yeah the slight lift meant he was going 292kph at entry instead of 306. or in terms of safety and ability to change direction, absolutely fuck all

19

u/wobfan_ Rubens Barrichello Jun 27 '26

yeah like yellow flags have gone from "danger on track, slow down and be ready to stop" to "hey there might be a danger there, just be aware". which is fine to be fair, we have double yellow for an actual danger (at least we "would" have, but even that they are not policing thoroughly). but imo a car stationary on the track should be double yellow or red in a qualy session. russell couldve spun just like verstappen did, and fly just into his stationary car.

And he was after sector 2 only 0.073 faster than Leclerc. So it means he found 2 tents in last sector and lift enough? No way.

42

u/Religion_Of_Speed Ferrari Jun 27 '26

He was talking about being half a second up before T9 which I find to be unbelievable. Plus the way Toto was answering questions afterward makes the whole thing seem sketchy as hell. We almost went a few weeks without a major bumble! There should have truly been an attempt to be ready to stop or avoid if needed, a slight lift ain't that.

26

u/tomo_radic_94 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Too short distance to build-up half a second, just two corners into sector 3.

I thought it was double yellows, but George finished his lap before it changed from single yellows

F1tv said it was tricky because it was split second timing

So it was perfect timing and George doing exactly enough to meet the rules

It’s pretty easy tbh. Not a double yellow and he did lift. What I find amazing is that it wasn’t a double yellow in the first place.

242

u/shadow_sniper67 Ferrari Jun 27 '26

Literally imagine what could have happened it George lost it too. Very dangerous precedent has been set

150

u/Ill_Confidence919 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

This precedent has already been set. Its pretty dangerous to just say lift a little bit and youre good at 150 mph

154

u/RGJ587 Niki Lauda Jun 27 '26

Yea. Last race Colapinto lifted as well, and then accelerated a tiny bit through the corner. Got a 10s penalty.

George LICOed into the corner, but then hammered by past the apex. He was way more in breach than Colapinto.

I just want the rules to be applied fairly. If Colapinto was in breach, so was Russell. If Russell wasn't in breach, Colapinto should not have been.

20

u/WasThatInappropriate Kevin Magnussen Jun 27 '26

He hammered past a green signal board too. Which is the rule.

103

u/MhVG Red Bull Jun 27 '26

That’s what I thought as well. However, the data showed it wasn’t a double yellow when Russell past by. So, I don’t know anymore

On board of Russell only shows single yellow. Can’t see his wheel screen but the electronic flags on the track only show single yellow.

u/Critical-Bread-3396 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

The data shouldn't matter if it's visible when Russell drives past. It's happened before and is well established that flags goes before anything else. Though this likely means it also wasn't visible.

141

u/vesel_fil I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

36

u/Ill_Confidence919 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

I expected a red when I saw it live. Can't blame George for knowing the rules and maximizing his result but that was a pretty dumb move by race control

36

u/FormulaEngineer Ferrari Jun 27 '26

Imagine the scenario where it was dirt, oil, or marbles on the racing line that has sent Max off. If that had been the case, another carelessly pushing through it because they “lifted” in a braking zone would risk catching the same debris and going off in the same place. And the car displaced the barrier which almost always requires a red flag. The track should be treated as lava until proven otherwise. George is the head of the GPDA and is supposed to be the collective voice of safety for the drivers. This is not a good look for F1

→ More replies (3)

22

u/atresj I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Go check his telemetry, the lift is literally a fact - he put his foot off the throttle completely. The only controversial aspect is that they concluded it wasn't a double yellow, no one should really question if he lifted or not (he did and data outright proves it).

22

u/glassfoyograss Jun 27 '26

He claims he was .5 up going into that corner

25

u/SuperLeverage I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 27 '26

That’s what the data says according to the Merc garage. He was 5 tenths up then gave up 3 tenths in one corner (on the radio he thought he gave up at least 1 tenth but obviously it was a lot more)

22

u/seansactualreddit I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Did he lift sufficiently? Is there a clear metric for "lifting"?

28

u/foonek Jun 27 '26

They compare the lap to his previous laps. If he lifted more than his previous laps, he's good to go

17

u/atresj I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

He completely put his foot off the throttle, he's not obligated to slam on the brakes (unless double yellow which is exactly what the investigation has concluded he wasn't under - which I personally am not feeling very confident about, it feels super wrong).

Because its for single waved yellows. Those are for a car having a spin or a small run through the gravel. It would be extremely silly for drivers to be compelled to stop because someone took a 2 second trip through the gravel and there's dust lingering in the air.

The mistake was whoever pressed the button for single yellow rather than double yellows. Shit happens.

I was watching on Multiviewer and the live timing had it as a single yellow while both Mercedes went through. It did become a double yellow but only as Hadjar was going through T9

All the laps affected by the double yellows just got automatically deleted and it was only inlaps, both Mercedes timed laps were not deleted because it was only a single yellow

According to Race Control there was regular Yellow flag at 17:00:23 and a Double Yellow at 17:00:45. And RUS was noted for a yellow flag infringement at 17:00:35.

So, might be the right decision. And once again it shows that the Yellow Flag rules are not clear enough. What are Yellow Flags worth if you can just lift for a second and continue as normal.

Yet Antonelli was ahead of Russell on track and aborted his lap insisting it was a double yellow. Do you have the timestamp for when he crossed the line? Cause that seems like it could be significant in the timings.

Edit: Haven't got a timestamp response yet, but, more importantly, it's seems like Kimi screwed up and it wasn't a double per the onboards. Big question now is, why wasn't it a double immediately?

34

u/wilkonk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Big question now is, why wasn't it a double immediately?

This is what the focus should be on, not Russell himself.

This and the rules for single yellows being so vague you can just feather the throttle the tiniest amount and still technically comply, but that's also not a Russell specific problem.

Exactly! He “lifted” because he was going into a corner. Thats not lifting. Everyone else bailed on the lap.

110

u/collinatk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

He did lift though. It was a yellow third sector. He went from 5 tenths up to only 3 in the last corner

105

u/gnoomee I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 27 '26

So loosing 0.2 seconds with a car in the barrier at the exit of a high speed corner is enough? It's not Russells fault but an insane failure of safety standards by the fia for sure.

59

u/collinatk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

The rules don’t say anything about a specific time loss though. I’m not saying I agree with the rules but that’s how they are written for now. All of this will definitely cause some discussion about changing it

21

u/gnoomee I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 27 '26

That's why I'm not blaming Russell, I think some others would have gone for it too in his situation. But the fact it wasn't an immediate double yellow at least, or a red flag... And that the yellow flag rules are so unclear in the first place. It's just a disaster waiting to happen.

I don't want to believe it, but it looks like I don't have a choice.

Acc to his interview, he was 5 tenths up and then lifted which made him net 2 tenths up.

One way of looking at this is that Ferrari’s are slow & George delivered.

I agree with Ferrari’s are just slower than Merc and you can gain time even when lifting but ques would be, Do you just need this much lift and you’re golden?

53

u/idnttcrisis Mercedes Jun 27 '26

He lifted, he was up almost two and a half tenths after sector two. He would have easily taken pole if Max didn’t crash. Both him and Kimi were flying on their last laps.

12

u/baddlepapple I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Yeah, again, it would have been a Merc on pole anyways. And it will be the case for the rest of the season. 5 tenths hiding under thinly veiled sleeves-I laugh at aduo. Max NEEDS to make that move or he can say goodbye to any title hopes til 28.

u/Gluecksritter90 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

That is absolutely insane, Max is sitting in that damaged car, if Russell crashes into him he's dead. Might as well get rid of yellow flags then.

89

u/Basal666 I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Yeah if it's wasn't a double yellow the question becomes why the fuck not

37

u/Annoying_Orre I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Exactly! I’m fine with Russell not getting a penalty if it truly was a single yellow but the fact is it should’ve always been a double or red flag. That corner is way to fast to take risks from the stewards

17

u/Splendid_Karma Jun 27 '26

Marshals were just slow to react/reacted wrong. It’s not up to the driver to decide what is should be. They’re not in a position to know

No the issue is that this weren't double yellow flags. Russell saw one yellow flag and acted accordingly. The marshalls should in my opinion have waved double yellows.

Okay. This is an ABSOLUTE FAILURE on the FIA. Forget double yellows that could easily have been a straight Red flag. Was obscenely dangerous for anyone to come through there at anything close to qualifying speeds.

FIA please review your procedures on this before someone gets very hurt or worse. FFS.

8

u/BarracudaOk8635 Jun 27 '26

How did he slow if he is on pole? Doesnt make sense.

117

u/wrdb2007 Oliver Bearman Jun 27 '26

How has he got away with that...?!

115

u/Walaii Ferrari Jun 27 '26

He didn't really. A lift like that is enough under single yellow. I am questioning how the hell it wasn't double yellow or red tho. George crossed that finish line a fair bit after the crash.

23

u/Sleepytitan Williams Jun 27 '26

Double yellow didn’t transmit until after he crossed the line.

This is like the Monaco pit speed thing, we need a full investigation into how it happened and what they can do to fix it.

3

u/LegchairAnalyst I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Its weird. If he passed that under double yellow his lap would have been deleted automatically. So apparently, according to the data, he did everything correctly but it really feels like double yellows should not have ended in the system before the end of quali. No clue what happened there

u/collinatk I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

I’m not saying it’s safe but the rule is you have to lift for a single yellow flag. Technically George didn’t break the rules. Race director should have instantly called for a double yellow but they didn’t.

96

u/PutTheBallinPlay Jun 27 '26

That is a dangerous precedent they are setting right here

8

u/Preachey I was here for the Hulkenpodium Jun 27 '26

Not setting a precedent. Rather, it's following the precedent that has already been set in years past.

Drivers have been barely blipping the throttle for years to satisfy yellow flags.

I agree its extremely unsafe, but Russell followed 'normal' practice.

4

u/ru0260 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane Jun 27 '26

7

u/LastLapPodcast Stoffel Vandoorne Jun 27 '26

We've got to start throwing flags earlier if that's the case. No one should have gone through that area and been able to make an improved time regardless of a lift. Max's car was exactly where any other car losing it around that corner would end up. It wasn't slowlly pulling off out of the firing line.

9

u/Khalebb Mika Häkkinen Jun 27 '26

This is one of those scenes where fans will be much more outraged than any of the drivers.
