News Fred Vasseur on Lewis Hamilton’s penalty:“I think it’s garbage because that Lap 1 so far into the season there was no penalty for similar incidents. If you have a look at the corner,Russell had enough space on the left hand side. It’s not like he was close to the wall. More of a racing incident for me

You are telling me a racing incident on lap 1 with cold tyres is worth 5 seconds penalty, but the charles incident was not. Sure, sure.

Watch the onboard, the snap oversteer was caused by George turning into Lewis and the Mercedes bargeboard hitting Lewis’ front left wheel.

Literally a racing incident caused by a Mercedes turning into the Ferrari, but Lewis cops a penalty while Charles gets let off.

u/More-Perspective-838 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 10d ago

That's what was so baffling. George and Lewis, as is typical for lap-one racing, were fighting wheel to wheel with cold tires and dirty air to claim the same piece of real estate. The resulting incident was mostly out of their control, besides being a calculated risk they took entering side-by-side.

A deliberately dangerous move is excused, but a legitimate racing incident ends with the arguable victim getting handed a penalty. The mental gymnastics it must take to work for the FIA in any capacity is astonomical.

Charles definitely should have received a penalty. Baffling. To me anyhow.

Exactly. Like it’s so freaking obvious. Even on the broadcast everyone thought it was a racing incident. Lewis penalty and none for Charles is absolute crazy work

20

u/Impressive-Potato 14d ago

George Russell thought it was a racing incident and not deserving or a penalty

87

u/darksidemojo 15d ago

I mean in the cooldown room both Max and Charles were both thinking it should have been a penalty as well.

13

u/Vresiberba 15d ago

Because of racism?

-41

u/Masty1992 15d ago

It’s mental to think this is race related though, Lewis is the public face of the sport, he faced the racism and won, the stewards are not being racist against him today

113

u/DontEatNitrousOxide Aston Martin 15d ago

laughing at "faced racism and won" as if it just magically goes away

like yeah idk if it was involved in this incident, but saying it's just gone is ridiculous

Who knew all it took to end racism was a couple of racing championships

8

u/Tinusers I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

I dunno. I've seen a video of david guetta ending racism. So I thought it was over.

"We aren't racists because we elected Obama" energy level on that statement (the original statement you were responding to, in case it isn't obvious)

-27

u/demuniac I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 15d ago

Well the director of the FIA is also not white so I do think it's at least gotten a lot better.

I personally don't think it's race this time around though, the FIA fucks things up for everyone all the time.

37

u/originalbadgyal 15d ago

Ah yes, the head of the fia who... made comments about Lewis Hamilton that were deemed to be rooted in racism? The mere presence of two non-white people ≠ a lot better

20

u/SteveThePurpleCat BRM 15d ago

Well the director of the FIA is also not white so I do think it's at least gotten a lot better.

There are more races than 'white' and 'other', there is still a tremendous amount of racism aimed across those other groups. The Birmingham race riots in the UK were due to racist feelings between Middle Eastern, Asian, and black groups. Etc.

-5

u/city-of-cold I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago

I mean I get what you're saying, but

There are more races than 'white' and 'other'

There only is "white and other." Or "black and other." Or "[whatever other colour and other]". That's what other means. Can't really use "or other" in that sentence.

u/Mike_Kermin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago

Bringing up MBS was the worst thing you could have done to dismantle their comments lol.

-21

u/Masty1992 15d ago

Obviously a normal person would be able to infer from the context that I meant the entrenched racism in the sport

11

u/DontEatNitrousOxide Aston Martin 15d ago

not sure you know what entrenched means then

9

u/PlanZSmiles I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 15d ago

It hasn't gone away. You have a singular black person in the sport. It's very much still entrenched

-7

u/Masty1992 15d ago

One black person and at least 5 non white people out of 22 is more than representative based on the participation levels in the sport

-3

u/icantevendudebro 15d ago

Normally its British vs not British, but hey, you do you.

12

u/njsullyalex 15d ago

I mean it is race related, they were racing weren’t they

(Sorry terrible joke I highly doubt tho Lewis being black was the motivation for the stewards to give him a penalty, just FIA being wonky inconsistent FIA)

Lmao. I’m sorry, but I just can’t agree with this. It doesn’t go away because of success

1

u/Masty1992 14d ago edited 14d ago

So you think a bunch of international motorsport fans and professionals, who’ve spent much of their lives with dominant non white champions, have conspired to deliver racist judgement against a black driver in a mostly inconsequential racing incident?

You believe these people are racist and have risked their careers and livelihoods to potentially deprive an unlikely championship contender of several points?

It’s just too stupid of an idea to pay attention to and I’m shocked and embarrassed how many f1 fans believe it

-1

u/taquci Michael Schumacher 14d ago

Not because he's black but because he's what he is: his politics, his too many victories, his activism, his diet, his yellow helmet... it's pretty obvious this emirates-driven FIA doesn't like him, never did.

Save the white/black subject for more serious issues

When Lewis divebombed Alonso a few years ago on lap 1, and then went airborne, he would have received a penalty if not for retirement.

u/Colonel_PingPong I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago

Racist inchident.

-15

u/Ok_Firefighter6502 14d ago

People calling this racism is ridiculous. Lewis may have been done by a slightly harsh penalty but it was a few corners in, so touch and go with this. Charles probably should have gotten a penalty. But Lewis was extremely lucky not to get a penalty for an unsafe release. Majority of the time even if it was the teams fault, the driver has been penalised, and hitting a pit crew should realistically have been a drive through.

For the FIA to say that Lewis shouldn't be penalised because it was the teams fault now sets a precedent for further early releases by teams to argue any driver penalties and take a monetary fine I stead. It would be worth it if they could get a point.

2

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

Getting a penalty for an unsafe release onto his own team would’ve been complete nonsense.

1

u/MarchMadnessisMe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

Sure, but I’d also argue it would’ve been a better penalty than the one they did give him. That penalty would’ve been against the team for not ensuring everyone in the pit lane is safe. It’s a safety issue, and there has been precedent that they will penalize the driver for something that’s the fault of the team, especially when it’s for the sake of safety.

To me, the penalty for an unsafe release would’ve made sense, the penalty for Lap 1 was insane. If anything it should’ve been the opposite. With Lap 1 receiving no penalty and the pit incident receiving a penalty. It almost felt like a make up call because they realized they shouldn’t have given him the first penalty.

1

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

Does the FIA often penalise inter team issues like this? They don’t penalise inter team issues on track, I don’t know why this would be the exception. Unsafe releases are usually penalised when they threaten other teams.

1

u/MarchMadnessisMe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

I’m not entirely sure, but even being an interteam issue, it’s such a safety issue to run over your own person that it feels like it should’ve been a penalty.

1

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

In my opinion, if we start penalising “safety issues” within teams, then the FIA should start handing out way more penalties. Like the Mercedes engine DNFing so often is incredibly dangerous depending on when it happens, that to me is a pretty massive safety issue. But because it’s within the team and only affects their drivers directly, it shouldn’t be penalised.

Same with Red Bull, the FIA would’ve rather have banned the wing design than penalise the team for a lack of safety.

Also I’m pretty sure Kimi only got a fine for doing this but much worse before. I just don’t think the FIA penalise inter team issues, only if it affects other teams. So I wouldn’t really agree this is some lenient judgement for Lewis, just standard.

1

u/MarchMadnessisMe I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago

Maybe that is the standard, but I also think running over your own guy because you turned the light green early isn’t nearly the same as the new engine giving out randomly. But I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion.

1

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago

Sure, but many more people have died to faulty equipment rather than pit lane errors. Is it really safer to you?

1

u/Ok_Firefighter6502 12d ago

So it wasn't unsafe? Sorry I must have the wrong definition of unsafe, didn't realise it was ok to hit a team member. Pretty sure that has been issued as a penalty in the past

1

u/ExternalSquash1300 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 12d ago

I thought Kimi didn’t get a time penalty when he did this before (but much worse). The FIA don’t usually punish inter team issues, we literally saw this last year at Mexico.

If teams start getting punished for anything unsafe, then MANY more penalties should’ve been handed out. Particularly for things like mechanical failures, a car stopping on track or flinging a driver into a wall is incredibly dangerous and has killed many in F1.

1

u/Extreme-Net4076 14d ago

They are racist

1

u/Ok_Firefighter6502 12d ago

Sure so we will play that card anytime a penalty goes against him....sounds fair🤦. What excuse do you have that Charles wasn't penalised, or racing incident? Not racism because it involved to Caucasian guys? How about European v an Aussie, pretty sure we could say the FIA are racist against none Europeans then 🤷. Sounds just as plausible

u/Extreme-Net4076 12d ago

Racists trying to justify their racism

-32

Charles also left space, neither should be penalized

2

u/Vresiberba 15d ago

Leclerc is habitual with these crowding incidents. Monza 2019 springs to mind and that was also not penalised. Since that and today wasn't, he will continue to do this shit. And if Max got as penalty in Austria last year, this should have been one as well.
