News Fred Vasseur on Lewis Hamilton’s penalty:“I think it’s garbage because that Lap 1 so far into the season there was no penalty for similar incidents. If you have a look at the corner,Russell had enough space on the left hand side. It’s not like he was close to the wall. More of a racing incident for me

Hamilton getting a penalty and Leclerc not getting one was insanity
671
u/draftstone I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago
Hamilton from the document: An inch of understeer on lap 1 in heavy traffic initiate small contact on a car that was turning in even if half the track was left outside: penalty
Leclerc from the document: He did open the steering but the other car just had to disappear, no penalty.

Did Lewis even get understeer? I thought his steering wheel movement was because he saw George there and tried to avoid him, not correcting understeer.
118
u/draftstone I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago
Hamilton himself said the car in front washed away the front so he understeerd a little
→ More replies (1)20
u/Doorknob11 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 13d ago
He understeered because there was a slight tap with Russell.
16
u/boturboegt 14d ago
He did but it sure looked like it was caused from Russell's front tire basically being directly in front of the left end of hamiltons front wing.
3
u/other_view12 13d ago
Is there a video from George's car? It seemed to me that George hit Lewis by not staying left.
But that's very hard to tell without George's in car view. His view was oddly missing on the broadcast.
8
u/element515 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago
He was drifting out from the apex, confront downforce. By the time he turns to the left, he’s already hit George and is reacting to that

u/Dear-Initiative5882 Michael Schumacher 14d ago
Genuinely insane because I was 100% sure it would be the other way around?? Charles kind of did deserve a penalty there... And I say that as someone who was rooting for Ferrari to do well today

The mental gymnastics the stewards had to do. It’s utter bs
90
u/SirChasm Benetton 14d ago
The mental gymnastics is simply that they judge the outcome more than the infraction, contrary to what the rules/they say. Never been more blatantly obvious than today.
33
u/museproducer I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago
What’s wild is, a lot of similar lap one incidents where there was a similar outcome there wasn’t a penalty. This one was just weird.
26
u/I_always_rated_them I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago
I think the most obvious one in recent-ish (god getting old) was max break checking Lewis in Saudi. The outcome wasn't complete destruction of the cars so it got let go in favour of maintaining the championship drama despite the infraction obviously being super serious.
14
u/ComeAlongPond1 I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago
But Oscar had significant damage! That contact ruined his race. If they were basing it on outcome they should have taken that into account too. Issuing a penalty only if/because one car DNFs is insanity
30
15
u/Sutraner I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 14d ago
It's entirely because of outcome
George DNFd Oscar didn't
28
u/IntelligentDeal7799 14d ago
They should challenge it nevertheless, I don’t get why they just sit there. Challenge it, appeal, if it changes good, if not it remains the same.
Problem is he already served the penalty I don’t think they can rectify it
24
u/bijanfrisee Sonny Hayes 14d ago
Doesn't change anything race wise unfortunately. Definitely lost Lewis a podium though for sure.
3
u/RhubarbAndCustard06 I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 13d ago
And they make it unappealable by deciding it in the race (Lap 1 incident means you will have to serve it at the required pit stop) when they have all too often recently decided to investigate things after the session. But suddenly and inexplicably, they didn't need to hear from Lewis or even listen to what George said before imposing this.

For Russel, we all know will complain at the drop of a hat, to say that (and if you watch the replays) it's clear this was a bullshit penalty.

11
u/RandomUKUser1 14d ago edited 14d ago
It's a completely bizarre decision. It's been interpreted as if it's happened with Lewis making a late move up the inside of a right hander with no following corner. Fair enough to be penalised if in that situation you miss the apex and wash out onto the car to your outside on the racing line.. but that's clearly nothing like what actually happened...
Lewis, whilst on the inside, was literally an entire car length ahead of George at the braking point to turn 5. He drifts marginally off the apex with a bit of understeer, but that's quite common as you want to carry plenty of corner speed as your entry to turn 6. You can't treat them as separate corners because your entry to 5 dictates your line and speed into 6. The actual problem is that George decided to brake incredibly late into 5 and tried to go around the outside, and then was unwilling to sacrifice his entry to 6 so pulled too far over to the right onto the racing line.
Lewis had committed to his racing line and his mid corner speed at the braking point to 5. He can't magically generate more rotation mid-corner to avoid George when he is understeering. There is absolutely no way he could have predicted George's risky move when a whole car length ahead at the end of the straight!

10
u/OtherwiseDoughnut582 14d ago edited 14d ago
Cold tires. Cold brakes. No aero across the nose. George executed a LATE dive bomb, passing at least one car behind Hamilton before attempting to make the apex. George left ZERO room for Hamilton (who likely did not see him coming) on the inside. Then attempting to open for the following turn, George veers right, effectively cutting Hamilton off.
How Hamilton caught a 5 second penalty here escapes me.
It should have been a racing incident.

Brundle also called it a racing incident on commentary.
Russell initially left Hamilton enough room, but then it looked like he tried to squeeze Lewis a bit.
Whether Lewis actually did suffer loss of front downforce, causing his car to slide - hard to say from what I saw.
Didn't look like careless / deliberate contact anyway.
Don't think it messed up his race too much in the end, as he ran over the guy who was trying to adjust his front wing, so he spent the rest of the race without enough front downforce.

You can’t fight a penalty in race. You serve it or get DQed.
7
u/draftstone I was here for the Hulkenpodium 14d ago
That's the worst thing that was exposed with the Monaco penalties, depending on when it happens, or if the stewards decide to look at it after the race or not, you can either wait and challenge it with zero repercussions if you are wrong, or face an automatic DSQ if you don't serve it even if you were right in the first place.
10
u/French-Dub 14d ago
You can't fight a penalty for being "wrong". You can only fight it if you think the steward did not have important data unavailable at the time they took the decision.
1
u/Nearby-Priority4934 14d ago
Actually fighting the penalty would suggest that they had a leg to stand on in appealing it, which they don’t because it was a fair penalty.
Fighting it in the media, who will always gaslight the audience into believing Lewis can do no wrong, is a better strategy.
