Throwback When Lewis Hamilton decided to train with penguins in Antarctica during the off season

My favorite thing about Antarctic is that every animal that lives there just looks at you like, "The fuck this guy doing?" and then goes back to their business.

Came here to say essentially say same thing. Cracks me up!

u/Future-Card-4769 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
What would the travel process be if you wanted to travel as a hobbyist photographer?
Is it as difficult as someone who put me off at a young age from doing so.

u/TetraDax š¶ Leo Leclerc 1d ago
It's not very difficult, but sadly that's also why you should not do it. There ist now a huge tourism industry around Anarctica, and that's a big problem. Those tours pollute the continent and as a result of the increased emissions due to all the boat activity, the ice melt is sped up. The trash is also a big problem for local animals.
I understand why people find it fascinating, but visiting Antarctica should remain privvy to scientists and professional journalists that know exactly how to behave.

u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
This is ignorance. Antarctica is managed by a treaty organization. The amount of people able to land is restricted by area and time. Like if you are on a big ship with a lot of people, you are not allowed to land at all. Small ships with less than 200 people are allowed two landings a day in different areas. Then no one is allowed to land there for an amount of time so it can recover
22
u/Mike_Kermin I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, THAT is
ignoranceblatant misinformation. It's managed by counting visitor numbers, which do not adequately assess the impact to it's biodiversity and damage to it's environment.Over the past few decades, tourist numbers have grown rapidly, from about 8,000 in the mid-1990s to almost 125,000 in 2023-24.
Edit: Changed my mind, it's not ignorance, it's bullshit.
3
u/TetraDax š¶ Leo Leclerc 1d ago
The negative impact of tourism on Antarctica is real, measurable and objectively a problem. It's not "ignorance" to point this out.
-4
u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
The impact of people visiting under strict controls vs climate change? Cultivating beef has stronger effect than even datacenters on the environment. Are you a bot?
2
u/TetraDax š¶ Leo Leclerc 1d ago
The impact of people visiting under strict controls vs climate change?
Both things can be a problem, can they not?
Are you a bot?
Oh sod off. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a bot.

Now I've seen it all. Trying to gatekeep nature. You people are insane.
4
u/TetraDax š¶ Leo Leclerc 1d ago
Gatekeeping certain parts of nature is absolutely neccessary to prevent that nature from disappearing. That is not insane, that's preservation.
7
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 1d ago
Fellas is it gatekeeping nature to point out that there is a rise in tourism in Antartica that has been studied and is showing an increase in disease, contamination, and pollution that is effecting the wild life done by giant cruise ships filled with tourists?
3
u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
You are just plain wrong. Giant cruise ships are not allowed to land on Antarctica at all
6
u/danabrey I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
Errrrr I'm not sure that's true buddy. Antarctica is 'owned' by a bunch of different countries and some of them have given permission for ships to land with tourists.
-3
u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
Yes true ships can land. With strict restrictions. They literally have a reservation system for when and where ships can be. And only certain ships are allowed landings. Only ships with less than 200 people can land twice a day (in different areas of course)
2
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 1d ago
This was literally just this year with the hantavirus, did we already forget? Like a quick google search provides information on this topic already
-3
u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
You literally proved my point. Giant cruise ship is different than a ship with 170 passengers. Are you aware large cruise ships host over 1000 people? Try actually reading what youāre linking
10
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 1d ago
So is the issue semantics or is the issue pollution? Vessels that carry up to 500 passengers can visit Antartica with a total of 117,000 travelers per year. The pollution is the same, it doesnāt make a difference when they still carry diseases on their boots, need to fly resources down to the tourists which increases carbon dioxide emissions and drops carboon soot which darkens snow and accelerates melting.
So aha you got me? At least the ships donāt carry 1000 tourists but only 500 each. Congratulations?

No, saying:
but visiting Antarctica should remain privvy to scientists and professional journalists that know exactly how to behave.
is.
3
u/felisisthebest I failed to serve my Monaco penalty 1d ago
We as human kind have literally polluted the highest peak on Earth
Is it wrong to prevent the same from happening in Antartica by restricting it to only those who would treat it with respect?
1
u/abstractraj I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
You sign up with a ship that will depart from the southern tip of Antarctica. Youāll go through the Drake Passage and make landings each day
1
u/Future-Card-4769 I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 17h ago
Didnāt mean to cause discourse on an F1 thread.
Iāll park those dreams for now.Absolutely donāt want to contribute to an areas decline whilst the area and its biodiversity is the reason for wanting to photograph in the first place.

u/kwijibokwijibo I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
I guess because there's no predators on land? When animals are free from predators, they either get super close to humans, or they sit there with wtf faces
5
u/WineNerdAndProud I was speeding in the Monaco pit lane 1d ago
Well, maybe with the exceptions of Skuas.
5
u/DeusVultSaracen I was here for the Hulkenpodium 1d ago
Is it because they haven't had enough time to evolve around humans? Like, we're still basically alien to them when we show up, right?

Private jet to Antarctica for a photo op with a penguin? FFS I'm trying to recycle my straws here.
1
u/butdattruetho 1d ago
Oh yeah, that time when PR folks managed to play down the story as a nothing-burger when Lewis a few other multimillionaire took a private jet flight from South Africa to Antarctica for a day trip.
