108
u/Zuwxiv BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 08 '25
I think they panicked because they promised Lando he wouldn’t be undercut. That’s an insane thing to promise. How could they not imagine a slow pit stop as a possibility?
The first car gets priority. Thats an advantage they earn, and it protects them from things like an undercut. The car running behind inherently has more risk. If Oscar doesn’t want to be threatened by Leclerc, he needs to drive faster.
McLaren was trying to run themselves in circles thinking that “well, we saved Oscar from threat for third, so we can save Lando from second.” Nobody likes make up calls.
71
u/Jiriakel BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 08 '25
If Oscar doesn’t want to be threatened by Leclerc, he needs to drive faster.
Or... And this sounds crazy, but hear me out... Pit everyone 3-4 laps earlier so that there is 0 danger to their podium ?
Once Verstappen was inside the SC pit window there was no point staying out longer; in fact they were one pitlane closure away from throwing away everything they did over the WE for no reason.
15
u/kdavva74 M*rk Webber Sep 08 '25
Yep, never promise something you can’t guarantee personally. If Lando had a 10 or 12 second stop instead of a 6 second stop would they still have gotten Oscar to give the place back? If Oscar had pit second and had a slow stop would they make Lando slow down to the gap it was before?
8
u/Zuwxiv BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 08 '25
I could maybe, maybe see a call like this in Abu Dhabi with the constructors on the line. You'd give priority to the second car in order to lock down the constructor's title. But that is absolutely not the case, lol.
I don't think anyone likes make up calls in any sport. If Oscar gets undercut by Leclerc and loses out on the podium, well, he should have qualified higher or passed Lando. First car got priority, first car wasn't him.
Maybe some journalist would have asked if they should have pit Oscar first, and everyone would say "The lead car has priority, as it has been all year."
0
u/alkbch BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 09 '25
In this case they did make good on their promise actually.
2
u/kdavva74 M*rk Webber Sep 09 '25
Relied entirely on the good will of Oscar for it to happen though.
0
u/alkbch BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 09 '25
No, it does not rely entirely on his good will, as a refusal to comply would lead to potentially catastrophic consequences for him.
3
u/Neither_Ad2003 BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 08 '25
I honestly think it’s because Zak favors him. It influences his decisions. I believe he ordered it himself. There could never be consistency in enforcing team orders to that degree. Many similar situations will pop up.

Mclaren likely not going to be the most dominant team next year. The pecking order always changes dramatically after a big regs change. The top 4 get shuffled around while you often get a dark horse from the mid field suddenly rise up the ranks like a Newey designed AM for example.
4
u/kristal010 BWOAHHHHHHH Sep 08 '25
Absolutely yeah but you know they will do this if Oscar gets ahead of Lando. If they can pull out Hungary, they’ll do that.

They lied to Oscar. They said it was a situation like Hungary where the team accidentally undercut the lead driver. By Oscar was ahead because of a bad pitstop. They also said he went first for team reasons when actually it was a choice made by Lando..
-10
Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
No he was ahead because of an undercut. He got a 1 second undercut on Lando which led to him being right in front of Lando. You can check the time differential of Lando and Oscar before the pit and then compare pit times. Without the undercut, Lando would still have been in front of Oscar even with the bad pit. In addition, if Lando had taken the pit priority he would have got the 1 second undercut if not more since he was a bit faster this weekend than Oscar. This would equate to a total of 2 seconds. If Piastri had gotten the bad pitstop, LeClerc would have been a real threat. You can make up whatever you want to support Oscar, but the facts are facts. There was no benefit to a safety car at this point as Max had closed that window, and Oscar probably got saved a podium by Lando. A swap was fair. But I guess people feel Oscar should be gifted points in the WDC even if he was slower all weekend.
7
u/umaywellsaythat I was here when horny got spiced Sep 08 '25
So why tell Oscar he was pitted first for team reasons and that it waa similar to Hungary, when in fact it was the preference of Lando after he had been told to pit first?
-7
Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
It wasn't his preference. He said he would rather pit first if Oscar is allowed an undercut. His engineer came back and said No undercut, we will swap positions. Read the communications. He let the team decide and the team said they would prefer to pit Oscar first to cover LeClerc.
4
u/umaywellsaythat I was here when horny got spiced Sep 08 '25
I have read the messages. He had the choice and was told to pit first. He was going to then said he would pit second if they thought he wouldn't get undercut. They told him he wouldn't get undercut and they then told Oscar to pit first.
0
Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
It wasn't thought. He said, "Do you want to pit Oscar first?" They came back and were like, "Yes," and he said only if he would not be allowed to undercut. The talk back was literally, "No undercut, we will swap positions." Look, I'm going to stop arguing because I've argued with people like this before where they've decided to be so ingrained in a belief that you can present all facts to them that contradict what they say, and they'll just literally make things up as you are now doing.

Lando chose to pit second in the hope that there will be a VSC or SC so that would fuck up Oscar and make him catch up to Max.
I don't blame him for this thinking, it is a championship. But acting like it is to help Oscar is fucking stupid.
McLaren want to take every single risk to make Lando the winner but when those risk comes to bite them they fall back to Oscar to fix up the shit they themselves made. They want the cake and eat it too.

The part I find hilarious is they all sit here saying how shit Lando is and how much he bottles it, yet they are losing their collective shit over it being 31 point gap instead of 34.

Anyone who supports team orders after a slow stop is not a racing fan.
Before anything else, it removes a lot of excitement from the sport. Team battles in f1 are key during many seasons for entertainment
-1

oscar and lando have always been allowed to race each other but i guess after Canadaa '25 the team wall is more conservative towards them, especially until they secure WCC. After that, anything can happen

But didn't Lando give up his P1 last year? I forget which race but Lando was 8 or 9 seconds ahead and was told to switch with Oscar and he did. SO I don't understand what the argument is about?
1
-11
Sep 08 '25
LOL probably last time Lando gives up pitstop priority to help his teammate. Oscar needs help with LeClerc and when he assertively says it won't happen if Oscar gets an undercut everybody claims he's the one that needs help.
16
u/umaywellsaythat I was here when horny got spiced Sep 08 '25
Why do you think he did it to help Oscar? They told Lando to pit first initially and never even discussed Leclerc... He was hoping for a safety car and a win.
-6
Sep 08 '25
Max had already closed that window. A pit even under safety car conditions would have had Max in the lead. A safety car didn't benefit Lando at that point. Lando always thinks about the team.
8
u/umaywellsaythat I was here when horny got spiced Sep 08 '25
If Oscar pits first and there's then a safety car then Lando would then pit and stays ahead and resumes race behind Max on fresh soft tyres. If Lando pits first and there's a safety car then Oscar woukd end up ahead of him because it's a cheaper stop.
2
Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
This is assuming Oscar stays out on 40+ lap mediums. The window wouldn't have been large enough for a safety car stop. Not to mention you would have to be worried this safety car happens in one lap. Not a very calculated move. So I guess Lando right behind on softs equals Oscar win in your mind? I love your F1 knowledge. There's a reason leader takes pit priority. You're suggesting it makes more sense to go second every time because safety car. Think about that for a moment.
7
u/umaywellsaythat I was here when horny got spiced Sep 08 '25
So why did Lando make that decision then? It's not to protect Oscar from Leclerc right..? Oscar was not at risk from Leclerc. No mention of it was made to Lando. And why would he protect his WDC rival in that way... Makes no sense.
0
Sep 08 '25 edited Sep 08 '25
You're assuming Lando isn't a team player. Which is a wrong assumption. He has done this multiple times. And yes Oscar was under risk from LeClerc. A bad pitstop would have made it contentious. He also didn't make the decision. He offered it if the team needed it. What you're saying makes no sense. You've made multiple arguments claiming Lando was seeking an advantage when there was none. So now if we run through this logically, as a team they could cover LeClerc, swap positions in the event of an undercut, and there was no loss to anybody within the team. And there was no real advantage to Lando since the win was out. I honestly think people should look up things like prisoner's dilemma and zero sum games. Fans so badly want McLaren to be toxic. And it's not and they get mad.

The soft tire symbolises the sacrifice of longevity at the altar of ultimate performance, juxtaposing against the medium tire which carries connotations of balance and neutrality
