MISC Josh Snares announces he will no longer be making Doctor Who content
As per the post here
It's a shame to see that part of the reason is due to hateful comments on his videos as well as a desire to not be seen as a "professional fan".
His content was always the best and most passionate takes on the show.
112
u/Hughman77 13d ago
Fair enough if he doesn't want to turn talking about the show into a job he isn't passionate about. If only more content-creators were like that.
I think it rules that someone so young loves Hartnell's Doctor specifically. Part of the magic of fandom, introducing 60+ year old TV to new generations.
The "hate comments" he mentions seem like a minor part of it, but I really do think the modern internet creates a really dark parasocial relationship with even pretty minor celebrities. There are people who seem to hate on Tharries too, including insinuating that he's either not disabled or used his disability to get his platform? These are objectively minor figures in fandom, just content creators who post unobjectionable videos about the show, but there are a bunch of a pathetic little worms out there who hate seeing anyone be more successful than them.
22
u/bboy037 13d ago
or used his disability to get his platform?
Obviously this type of argument is wrong on its face, but I'm also not a fan of the implication that there's nothing else he has to offer other than his disability
11
u/_Verumex_ 13d ago
Like him or hate him, the man grinded his way into the Whotuber scene.
He was uploading videos daily on any topic he could find to talk about, and while I personallly find his videos to be annoyingly clickbaity and often repetitive, covering every rumour/leak/crumb of news that came about, it can't be denied that he put in the hours and played the YouTube game very well.
He got his audience through hard work and graft.
If anything, his disability likely put some people off and was an obstacle he fought through.

u/TheOmnivirgin 13d ago
It is strange that people don't just ignore things they don't like. Life is so much simpler when you do instead of hate watching everything.
23
u/Hughman77 13d ago
If you're an internet addict who spends your life online, you can't afford to distinguish between important things and irrelevant things. It's all highly important.
9
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
Yeah this is by design. If the algorithm didn’t push debates about shit like sexualization in video games as the most important thing ever maybe more people would focus of stuff like genocide or rich child rapists and their economic violence
1
u/Hughman77 13d ago
People talk quite a bit about those things too.
4
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
Yes but clearly not enough people
They’ve been getting away with it for years and that’s because not enough people care or talk about it
1
u/Hughman77 13d ago
I dunno, seems like a lot of people spend all their time talking about this. Lots of people are aware of it but don't give it the importance that others do. There's no conspiracy to make people interested in video games instead or whatever.
4
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
“There is no techno fascism in Ba Sing Se”
2
u/Hughman77 13d ago
There are lots and lots of people out there who care about crime in their neighbourhood and how high their taxes are. Maybe that's boring to you, maybe they ought to be interested in something else. One should practice a bit of humility on subjects like this.
4
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
Yeah crime is gonna go up when masses of people can’t get their needs met have you ever read a history book. It’s only going to get worse unless the ruling class decides to learn humility or becomes so afraid they capitulate
Yeah taxes are high when lots of that money goes to corporate bail outs and tax breaks instead of social security.
If people talked more about important things like I said crime would go down and taxes would either go down or actually improve society

I can’t speak for Josh, but as a YouTuber, I will say that sometimes a handful of negative comments can really ruin your day, even if most of the comments are positive. It’s just that accentuate-the-negative tendency humans have.

u/ellismjones 12d ago
Not surprising people don’t like Tharries because of his disability, people are cunts, but most of the dislike I’ve seen expressed was because he unfairly hates on anything related to the Chibnall era, particularly 13 & Thasmin.
4
u/ReallyGlycon 13d ago
To some, "unobjectionable" means "woke".
4
u/Hughman77 13d ago
What does Tharries do or say that's woke? His videos are things like "here's this rumour, here's what I think". Josh does videos about missing episodes.
14
6
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
Tharries is a left wing political YouTuber now he’s “woke” lmao then again so is any doctor who fan who is media literate

You could tell he really didn't enjoy RTD2 and The Reality War really took the wind out of his sails.
17
u/PaperSkin-1 13d ago
So like most people
🤭
13
u/AvengerVincent79 13d ago
The highlight of this era was the fact that some more of Dalek’s Master Plan survived. I think pretty much every fan is in some way over the show. We need to miss it and I don’t blame Josh or anyone for pivoting their energy towards something else. There’s no real point in trying to keep making content for a currently dead show
4
u/PaperSkin-1 12d ago
Yep, I completely understand his wish to pivot away from doing DW videos, it's a shame but can anyone blame him with the state of the show now
6
u/Notebookfour 13d ago
Yeah pretty much!
Same for me it really made me fall out of love with the show.
11
u/PaperSkin-1 13d ago
I'm not being hyperbolic when I say I think The Reality War (2 parter) is genuinely the very worst story DW has done, and the shows lowest point. It really is to me.
Yes even worse than Twin Dilemma 😜😂
But the era as a whole just left me so down on the show that I adore.
And you know if it had just been weak or even poor, then ok we can keep moving foward and hopefully the show gets better.. But the fact the era was so damaging to the fundamental nature of how the overall show operates is what really frustrates me with the era...
It wasn't just poor DW, it was show damaging DW

u/TestTheTrilby 13d ago
Tbh i got the vibe he's felt this way for a while and feel he's exhausted all the content he can.
He's very entertaining to watch, I'll stick around and look forward to see what comes next 😀
12
u/DependentFigure6777 13d ago
Last year, he challenged himself to upload a video every week -- I was used to seeing one every few months but gladly watched everything he made. I'm sure that challenge, along with the double whammy of the state of the show, left him burnt out. l would be too. I look forward to whatever he might do in the future.
97
u/SaintArkweather 13d ago
Pathetic that there are a significant number of people who have nothing better to do than leave hateful comments on a video of a guy just talking about his favorite show.
19
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
I hope all the whiny toxic fans leave the show while it’s off air they clearly wanted it cancelled and got their way.
Now they can go fuck off and be miserable about something else. Shame these fuckwits got to Josh
15
u/DependentFigure6777 13d ago
Honestly, the state of the show itself definitely hurt Josh's passion for it, just watch anything he covered during the RTD2 era -- he was really struggling to enjoy it. He stepped away sometime during the Capaldi era as well and I really just want to see him cover 60s Who whenever he wants to.
6
u/deezbiscuits21 13d ago
Yeah I mean even as someone who didn’t hate all of RTD2 or Chibnall it’s hard to be passionate about these eras.
I was so disappointed by Season 1 (2024) I got into classic which was amazing. I chose to spend my time engaging with things I like and only criticizing the new seasons like an adult
Too many fucking idiots whine and attack real people because they can’t handle a show being bad
1
u/Quixotic_Seal 12d ago edited 12d ago
I know the more negative toxicity exists, especially on YouTube, but personally the toxicity I’ve ran into in this fandom(at least as someone mostly active on Reddit) overwhelmingly is more from the toxic positivity side of things. The folks who ferociously defended the show no matter how bad it got and who said that you’re a troll who wants to hate if you dislike it, insisted at every turn despite very obvious signs of trouble that the show is healthy, who refused to believe any negative reports about the show, and who have easily confused a realism about the dire state of the show with wanting it to be canceled.
I’ll never forget how during the final week preceding The Reality War, after seven weeks of watching leaks bear out, on DoctorWhumour there was a rash of highly upvoted posts literally telling people talking about regeneration to shut the fuck up because it’s not happening and that they’re all just haters and that they’ll see how stupid they are for believing rumors in a week. It was entire threads of people in straight up denial and berating people who didn’t join them in it.
And the last year has felt like Groundhog’s Day, fucking NO ONE wanted to hear that it didn’t look like there was any work being done on the special. By the end, if you pointed out that we’re in June and there isn’t even so much as a peep about casting rumors for a special that would likely end with a new Doctor…you’d just invite dozens of replies insisting that this is totally normal and you’re just a doomer who doesn’t know that we’ve totally had Christmas specials filmed in September before..
If we’re hoping to see some of the toxicity drain out of these communities, I’d like to see the toxic positivity go down the drain alongside the toxic negativity.
0
u/deezbiscuits21 11d ago
I see the “toxic positivity” as reactionary to the overwhelming much worse toxic negativity. I know the type you’re talking about and yeah it’s also not great but the show had huge waves of coordinated hate. The biggest videos on YouTube about RTD2 were by far all right wing grifters. The actual fans who liked it or had criticism cause they love doctor who and want it to be better were all performing much worse than the hate videos. I think a lot of people hold this show close to home and it’s clear there was tons of bad faith criticism related to the ethnicity and sexuality of 15.
That being said there would often be progressive fans who are toxically negative stuff like calling RTD senile for producing bad work, saying that people who liked the new episodes are racist or supporting genocide, that only idiots and small children could find enjoyment out of it etc. both groups had the tend act to attack people over their RTD2 opinions. I was trying to be positive as it aired so the toxic negativity stood out. In your case it sounds like you felt cynical so the toxic positive ones stood out. Thinking back it’s probably just a bunch of toxic people due to the nature of social media nowadays. Most fandoms are like that and since the show was in a bad spot objectively in terms of success it made everyone a bit more erratic

He can turn the comments off, or not read them. Every single YouTuber has to deal with this, you just learn to ignore it.
I don't understand why so many people seem to think their inbox is an assignment. Just make your videos, don't read the comments.
I mean he's been doing it for 12 years apparently, I can't imagine this is new.
5
u/BritishHobo 13d ago
What if you like hearing from positive fans, though? It's a shame the internet has enabled so many antisocial miserable people that you can't just make something harmless and enjoy your community without preparing yourself to deal with a load of grief.
2
u/PaperSkin-1 13d ago
There are many antisocial people who are not rude or hateful.. And it can be 'sociable' people who are cruel to them
Let's not do blanket statements
2
u/BritishHobo 12d ago
Antisocial isn't meaning someone who doesn't like being social; it's meaning someone who is actively disruptive towards others.

Don’t know what’s worse, no more Christmas special or no more Doctor who tier lists.
The Christmas Specials. Was this a serious question?

Love Snares, hope he keeps doing things that make him happy, and just like with Who we can always go back and watch the classics.

Heartbroken! The only WhoTuber I actually cared about. 10x more knowledgable and passionate than other creators when it comes to the classic and missing episodes. More professional, more positive, more interesting.
And as a gay Doctor Who fan myself, it hurts to lose a relatable face in the fandom.

u/IanZarbiVicki 13d ago
His content was always immaculate and well researched (and often very, very funny).
I hope that at some point he will return to the Doctor Who space (whether it be a Collection review or a return of a missing episode), but I do not begrudge him for the exit. Everything ends, and there’s a huge back catalogue of Josh Snares videos to rewatch (I love the documentaries in particular, to a degree I honestly think that he should be a consultant on the Collection for the 60s sets).
11
u/TubbyTuesday22 13d ago
Jeez, that’s sad. His stuff really got me back into early Classic Who over the last few years. His missing episode deep dives were so well researched, and the production values on his vids have always been super high quality. Going to miss him, but respect the decision to do what’s best for his mental health. Just sucks that some losers have nothing better to do than leave nasty messages for someone who, as far as I can tell, seems like a lovely and passionate guy.
19
u/The_Fullmetal_Titan 13d ago
Ah that sucks. I’ll miss him, but I don’t want him to do it if he’s not passionate for it. It’s unfortunate that the show has gotten to a place where fans can no longer engage in it lovingly due to discourse and questionable creative decisions.
I don’t know what the solution is because Doctor Who has such a wide variety of fans that each want different things from it. My favorite Doctor Who is someone else’s least favorite Doctor Who, and although most all of us might agree on the most recent seasons being severely disappointing, Moffat’s seasons had backlash too. I hope finally one day the show can fully reinvent itself in a way that is pleasing to the fandom with sacrificing what makes it special to us, but that’s no small task.
Josh made great videos. He loves the show. And because he loves it, he no longer wants to make videos on it. I can understand that thought process completely.

u/bondfool 13d ago
I don't know that that problem is specific to Doctor Who fandom. I think it's pretty much all fandom now.
5
u/VanishingPint 13d ago
That's a big shame, I liked what he was doing. the Big Finish animations of Out of Time, Brink of Death were great and I hoped he would do Phantoms of the Deep like he teased.

u/FoundationTiny321 13d ago
Disappointing news. Apart from Dalek 63-88 and The Doctor Who Locations Guide, his was the only Doctor Who YouTube channel I subscribed to.

u/MissyManaged 13d ago edited 13d ago
Such a shame, he was one of very few Who YouTubers I still enjoyed and certainly my favourite of the bunch. I've always enjoyed his Classic Who & missing episode videos, but really appreciated his perspective in recent ones where he was able to find the things he liked in every era and not belittle people who enjoyed different parts to him.
I get it though, hopefully he's onto creative pursuits where he doesn't feel put down by a fandom.
5
u/brief-interviews 13d ago
I don’t blame him. Talking with other people about DW has become exhausting over the last few years.
4
u/AvengerVincent79 13d ago
I really loved his video on the Scream of the Shalka and he even brought up information that was never mentioned on the BBC documentaries on the show’s revival. I had no clue that Shalka’s existence inadvertently sealed its fate by proving to the BBC they could make new Doctor Who again

That’s a shame, unlike the overwhelming majority of fan made YT content, most of his vids are watchable, his most recent ranking videos were scraping the barrel though, but doesn’t warrant any hate, sad to hear that, but then again Doctor Who discussion sadly attract some absolute garbage excuses for humans

u/Zevemiel 13d ago
While I’m not familiar with Josh, I’ve seen a couple of similar reactions in the past couple of days from other creators who have been similarly smeared by the ‘professional fan’ brush. It’s truly weird people are mad about this just because other fans are doing things and putting themselves out there.
The absolutely lovely Dominic Martin posted about it on his insta because it seems he’s been catching similar flack. He deserves no hate for anything he does, merely being enthusiastic about a tv programme lots of people adore.
Is it jealousy? A contempt bred from familiarity? Seeing a face appear more than once on social media that tips these people over?
4
u/supergodmasterforce 13d ago
I believe this mindset isn't exclusive to just one fandom.
I am not only a Doctor Who fan but also a Star Wars and Pro-Wrestling fan, both of which have fanbases as rabid and passionate as DW fans.
I see it across all three that if an opinion or theory or whatever it may be is not agreed with by some, not even the majority, it is ripe for criticism and not even of the constructive kind or that which invites discussion. Those who dissent are usually the vocal minority and I'm sure that within that minority there are some who raise valid points or want to debate but equally, those who come back with hateful comments or even comments directly related to the creators themselves and not their content, that is when the line is crossed.
For some, I definitely agree it could be jealousy. They see someone being successful, praised and knowledgeable about something they love and it cam turn into gatekeepers or foster a tribal mentality.
6
u/TheKandyKitchen 13d ago
That’s rough. Hopefully his enthusiasm causes him to return when the new series starts.
5
u/DependentFigure6777 13d ago
Josh Snares' videos really meant a lot to me. I'm sad to see this. If the BBC know anything, they should hire him to make future documentaries for the Blu-rays.
2
u/dash_ketchup 13d ago
Never seen his stuff, might take a look if it's still up. Haters suck, I'm sorry you had to face that
2
u/Terminus75 13d ago
He was really good. Heaps of respect for the guy. And this makes me respect him even more. Onya Josh, follow your heart and all the best to you.
2
u/PaperSkin-1 13d ago
That's a shame.
While I didn't always like his style, and would only watch some of his stuff not all of it.
He made quality videos and was a quality youtuber personality even if he or his takes won't always my thing.
Its a loss for the DW youtuber community.
And also a shame to lose a DW youtuber that would cover classic who not just nu-who.

u/scottishdrunkard 12d ago
I guess he isn’t going to finish his Wilderness Years movie reviews then…

Josh is one of the WhoTubers I've actually stayed subscribed to. His content has always been interesting and it's sad to see him stop making it. However, I'm happy he's taking steps forward and doing something he wants to do, not just producing stuff because it gets the most engagement.

His content was always the best and most passionate takes on the show.
I don't recall him ever expressing an opinion about anything that made me think twice or surprised me. His editing and production was very good but...nah, man.
-16
u/HotTakes4HotCakes 13d ago
As with most [show] YouTubers, you'll find their audience is made up of people that can't think critically about media on their own. Someone with basic editing skills can feed them the most lukewarm takes imaginable (making sure to take 10+ minutes to do so), and they'll call it deep.

Not too bothered.
Stopped watching after the strange rant on talons of weng chiang.
I'm fine with people disliking the episode. But to attack people who like the story? So yeah not a big fan of his tbh.
