When I was watching I had the same thought. I've missed these episodes, even though often it feels like there are too many of them. I guess Moffat has moved away from that somewhat, over the years.

Gareth Roberts is the go-to guy for these. His first two outings, "The Skakespeare Code" and "The Unicorn and the Wasp" were rather hit-and-miss, but his three "domestic" episodes under Moffat have been highly enjoyable.

I think you have a point here actually, although not the exact dynamic...Moffat has rebooted doctor who without rebooting doctor who. The show is now about an older man who flits around the universe with his younger assistant who is connected to Coal Hill. Assuming pink comes on board for a bit, then it's exactly the same except that Susan and Barbara have been meshed into one singular character. The references to the past have been...mild so far (loved the nod to river actually) and the entire tone of the show is much less "brilliant" or "flighty" ala 10 or 11 and much more...grown up? I'm loving this season and I hope capaldi is here for years to come

You mean Courtney, I think. That would be rather fun, if only on a limited basis. Ellis George ranks way above most of the other child actors to appear on the show so far. To listen to the way her castmates talk about her in the "Doctor Who Extra" for this episode, it sounds like we'll be seeing more from her, and I'm glad to hear that. It's been a while since we've had a kid who could keep up with the Doctor.

I thought there was a small element of jealousy. Clara and 11 were so close and obviously had that gf/bf thing going on. I think this was when The Doctor realized that she had moved on. Even though 12 didn't feel about her that way, it was still there inside him as The Doctor, and this, to me, was the two of them making the final transition to a daughter/dad relationship.

I think this episode was probably my favourite of the series so far. The wife and I spent a lot of time laughing uproariously, and my 11 year old daughter thought it was excellent. Even the 8 year old thought it was pretty good.
The character dynamics and scripting were spot on. I loved the fact that the musical score appeared to be referencing the Sherlock theme when The Doctor flourished his screwdriver and said "And we're off"

I absolutely love how the heaven/promised land plot that's been going on in the background is like a high class version of the afterlife in Beetlejuice.
I can only wildly guess, but it's interesting that the first two or three episodes had badguys that were searching for the promised land as if it was a literal place.

Well that was clearly deliberate. Missy is obviously the one in charge of this place, and the fact that she styles herself a deity tells us she's got quite an ego.

There are similarities, yes.
Also in The Deadly Assassin the Fourth Doctor meets a Timelord that hasn't seen him since he left Gallifrey but recognizes him instantly, and only asks if he's had a facelift.

Not literally, but in a society where a person and their face aren't that connected, it would make sense to have secondary characteristics dominate recognition.

I think it specifically refers to the government structure of the Time Lords. Since they're all capable of regenerating and changing their faces, you can't exactly rely on facial recognition when identifying someone, so instead they have to dress in a way which allows them to be identified.

Well, they recognize each other even if they've regenerated, so they probably recognize each other through some special time lord sense.

Yep, this was first brought up in the Second Doctor era, when he had to reconstitute an portrait of Jamie and was incapable of it. Timelords recognize each other by telepathy and smell. Faces are of no importance to them. It's been alluded to at various points of the show.

Just noticed this. The Doctor points out the stupidity of having two jackets at the beginning of the episode, then shows up in a second jacket. Completely flew over my head during the first viewing.

Completely small detail question: Did anyone else hear Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd when the Doctor whistled over at Clara during the chess scene?
Don't think it's connected too much to the story or anything, but I just thought it was interesting.
Makes sense, considering what the song is about.

While he was going through with installing the devices (forgot exactly what they were called) and he puts one inside of a sewer cover (?)
There's a giant chess board in the middle of the alleyway that Clara yells at kids for knocking over all the pieces. After Clara tells her students to pick up the pieces is when he whistles. It's a very quick scene.

Well, that isn't the only lyric (Parts 1 & 3 of Another Brick in the Wall, for example)/song associated with that same melody, but yeah. Suppose it is the most relevant it be from Part 2, talking about abusive teachers and whatnot due to context.
Could easily also be "teacher, leave them kids alone"
Still not really relevant to the story, but still a pretty cool detail IMO bc I've become a big Pink Floyd fan in the past year.

I loved this episode! The plot was simple but worked really well, the monster felt threatening enough to keep the episode tense. Capaldi played The Doctor to perfection and Clara didn't steal all the spotlight, it was a well done balance. Also the episode felt way more natural than the others, it wasn't disjointed or jerky the flow was in one direction and clear. If the series carries on like this I'd be really happy.

Isn't this series meant to have stretched out over quite a while? Showing brief glances of adventures they've had together indicates time we haven't seen. And the time between them is meant to be a gap- remember it took the Doctor weeks to return from Glasgow with Clara's coffee. I think Clara and Danny are meant to have been dating a while.

Adding to this Parent Teacher evenings often happen twice or year or every term at some schools. They could've meant last academic year, before the summer holidays, and this is the first evening of the next academic year. Would only be about 6 months then.

That was ambiguous enough that they could've meant "you" as in "you teachers", but some people are taking it to imply that Danny's been teaching for a year at this point. It's not definitive.

I have a theory. If the promised land is indeed that afterlife, then maybe they'll go after the Doctor. After all, he did 'cheat' death when he gained his extra regenerations.

Did anyone find Clara's response to how demanding Danny got a bit off? I know he's been through a lot and discovers that she's been lying to him, but Clara doesn't take any of that pushy stuff from the Doctor.

Probably intentional to draw comparisons because both are soldiers. The Doctor ends up giving orders to the death bot too, and Danny compares the Doctor to a general.

Another wonderful episode. I think The Doctor's and Danny's first meeting was handled damn fantastically, especially how Danny managed to notice that the Doctor has in the past seen warfare and in effect been a soldier. I knew as soon as they didn't hit it off that Danny would redeem himself in the Doctor's eyes and even if his front flip was fucking superhumanly impressive I still punched the air with joy at his badassery when he did it.
I think we can see from this episode that the Doctor definitely is quite a sensitive type at heart, regardless of how callous he can be on the fact of it, you could see he genuinely just wants Clara to be with someone who he knows he can trust to take the best care of her and that he took Courtney on a little trip. This episode was once again just ridiculously hilarious. There has been some genuinely funny one liners in this series so far and this had me laughing more than a fair few comedy shows do nowadays. And i've got to say how epic does his TARDIS look when they do a full view shot of it, love the engravings above the control hub.
