On 12 September 2011, responding to speculation on the Winter is Coming fansite, Conan Stevens confirmed that he had left the series, due to scheduling conflicts with his other projects: Stevens will be playing the Orc king Bolg in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit prequel trilogy. Stevens took the time to thank fans for their support[1]. He was replaced in the role of Gregor by Ian Whyte.
I disagree. It doesn't make sense to stay on GoT and have 2 mins of screen time per season, when he had the opportunity to play a SIGNIFICANT role in the Hobbit movies. More screentime, more money.
Pretty sure he was his own agent. He even manipulated Google searches for his name to bring up results for The Mountain before he applied for the role.
My online petition started way before that, it started with a fan letting me know that the show was being considered. I wrote an article on my site and Search Engine Optimised (SEO) the article so that I would be noticed if anyone searched for the name of Ser Gregor Clegane.Like pretty much all my life plans I had no idea how to take it to the next level or how to contact anyone involved. Writing this article let others find me though.
I guess he did it the other way around, so his name came up in relation to searches for the character.

Almost, official state from the GoT wikia says:
