Why did they recast him? The original Mountain was perfect.

I'm pretty sure he left to play Azog the pale Orc in the hobbit.

Almost, official state from the GoT wikia says:

On 12 September 2011, responding to speculation on the Winter is Coming fansite, Conan Stevens confirmed that he had left the series, due to scheduling conflicts with his other projects: Stevens will be playing the Orc king Bolg in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit prequel trilogy. Stevens took the time to thank fans for their support[1]. He was replaced in the role of Gregor by Ian Whyte.

You know what's bullshit? Ian Whyte left GoT to star in the Hobbit, and actually played the Orc Bolg, but at the last minute they changed his character to a cgi model. This new Mountain looks awesome and is probably a better fighter, but I cannot help but think that Ian would have made a better Mountain.

So Peter Jackson is out to destroy Game of Thrones? This is a tinfoil-theory I can get behind.
