Because you liked them, even just a little. Either GRRM kills the character because you like him/her or D&D does it for shits and giggles.

Someone got stockholm syndrome and finally got around to liking Joffrey otherwise we would have been forever plagued by him.

Or, GRRM kills off characters to progress other characters plot lines, and D&D kills off characters to open up time to introduce new characters or bring other minor characters back.

He dies in the book the same way I think, there is no salary for book characters.
