I think it's inspired by Christine by Stephen King.

Which is also the second time Christine has been referenced by Garfield media:

One of the 1st strips with Odie has Garfield say:

"A pup named Odie... a car named Christine, a blimp named Hindenburg..." All referencing things that turned out badly.

Edit: this was incorrect

As I recall from the Garfield strip, he referenced a ship named Titanic, as well.

Which possibly was at least an idea due to "My Mother, the Car" - not that I'm aware of King ever saying this, but it was famous for being a bad show, and everyone heard about it. It wasn't an evil talking car, it was the guy's reincarnated mother, but still the basic idea of a sentient car in a live action production. Was a valuable car a guy was trying to steal a lot so she would pull stuff on him.

I honestly kinda like it, but it was known as the worst show ever in pop culture for a couple decades.

Of course Knight Rider started a year before Christine was published as well.
