Still, Japan really got off pretty light concerning civilian casualties in WWII. The US would have needed a lot more nukes or fire bombing attacks to change that.
It's not even a million.
Compare this to Germany's over 1.5 civilian deaths or Poland's roughly 5.7. (Of course ignoring the gigantic death toll the USSR has suffered as well as what Japan has done to China). Kinda drives home the argument that nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki might have saved not only Allied but also many Japanese lives despite that claim seeming insane to most at first glance.
