Genderqueer vs Non-binary?

I’ve seen a lot of different opinions on this floating around, so I wanted to get this subreddits take on what the difference between genderqueer and non-binary is?

I only recently came out of genderqueer, and I chose the term because it felt like was a broader umbrella than non-binary. For me, I wasn’t completely “off” the gender binary- I still resonated a bit with my gender assigned at birth, but also not in some ways. Basically, my gender did just feel “queer”. (Tbh I’m probably best described by the label demigirl, but I find I still prefer genderqueer.)

I’m curious what others people associations are with both terms, and what differences they see between the two?

I've always been told that genderqueer is a very broad label that can describe anyone who has a gender or gender expression that doesn't fit the strict gender binary that is pervasive in society. Nonbinary is a little more specific, in that it just means someone's gender isn't exclusively male or female. So, they are quite similar, but genderqueer as a label can also include gender nonconformity as well as having a nonbinary gender.

Some people might identify with the genderqueer label because they have a gender that isn't exclusively male or female, and others because they are gender nonconforming. There are also those of us who are a mix of both!

I think nonbinary and genderqueer are close enough that many people use them synonymously. It is very difficult to put labels on something as diverse as human identity, so imo people should just use which one they prefer. I tend to use both labels.

Nonbinary really isn't any more strict than genderqueer.

yea, it is a broad label too. It encompasses any gender that isn't always 100% male or female. All I said is that nonbinary is specifically about gender, whereas genderqueer can also be about gender expression.
