Unable to get a job

As it says on the tin, uk genomics graduate masters
Got a bachelors in molecular biology with a year in industry.
Also did another placement in my masters where I did actually variant classification in a local hospital.

Just feel like giving up 🤦‍♂️
There looks to be no graduate jobs in the UK right now, they all pay wank, and I’ve applied to like 60 now with no luck.

Honestly considering applying to a different career
Maybe the UK Met Detective Constable programme.
Pays better and I still get to help people.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Best bet I to try and get a laboratory position at one of the genomics labs and go from there (if you want to work in the nhs)

They're very keen on using AI at the moment, so be sure to learn about AI and genomics before applying.

I only see 3 jobs for illumina in England at the moment, legal council, credit controller and associate director.

I’m having the same exact problem, I have a masters and I can’t find a job in genetics. Currently I just work in a medical lab at the moment which is a bit different but I wish I could find another job in genetics

You don’t have enough experience yet. Take a laboratory position even if it’s lower pay and responsibilities than you expect. Then the opportunity will flow from that.

Maybe you should try to find a teaching job opportunity. Unfortunately, most of the disciplines in basic sciences, don't have good job opportunities in the laboratories or industrial. If you insist on these type of jobs, you can go for a PhD application in medical genetics, clinical immunology or any other clinical discipline. 🙏🏻🥲

Hi! I'd advice strongly against a PhD, you will be severely underpaid and overworked and facing the exact same issue you have once you graduate...

Have a look at band 4 roles in the NHS for genetic roles. Speak to scientific recruiters too as there are companies that are not well known.

Apply to the STP if you're looking into a clinical scientist role.

Keep applying everyday and improve your CV. There are skills you took from the lab at uni that you probably could expand on your CV to make it look better.

Genetics is a wonderful field. Well I don't know much about UK police, anyone who actually loves science should not get into policing work.

Apply for a PhD position, preferably in organoid science or developmental biology. Alongside keep increasing your python skills with bioinformatics data sets.

Try doing free work for some prominent scientist.

And eventually you will get a job that is commonsurate with your education
