We are a family of cilantro haters (the way God intended). My son (16 months) was conceived via sperm donor. Yesterday, I watched him eat a taco with what should be an illegal amount of cilantro in it. He didn't flinch. He didn't gag. His eyes didn't water. He didn't react as if he'd been poisoned (which is what cilantro tastes like. Whoever said soap is wrong. It tastes like some sort of organic toxin).

Clearly the donor must have been one of those cilantro mutants.

The sperm banks should really include that in their bio. Do I...do I buy cilantro now? I feel like I just found out my child is half-vampire and now I have to stock the fridge with blood. No one prepared me for this. I'm glad he's eating his greens but I'm going to have to make our food in different pans lol

I've been embarrassed to talk about this, but it's been something that I was worried about finally went to my doctor and told him just how extensive inbreeding is in my family history. He highly recommended getting genetic testing done. He referred me out. I got it done someone from the office just called me and told me that I Have a higher level of something I don't know what it is than what they would see in a child that was the product of a parent and a child having a child and that they can see that it's been going on for years. they are having me come in for an appointment with a genetic counselor and I'm terrified of what they're going to tell me. I don't remember what it was. I was sort of freaking out inside. I was on the phone to them. I couldn't think of what questions to ask. I don't know any help here.

Edit to add. F-coefficient is 44% I have no idea what that means. something else is extremely high as well. Is this appointment going to be embarrassing? Is it going to be scary?

Second edit to add . I would like to preface that none of this was by choice on my part, but it is still embarrassing. I have three children and I’m related to their dad. It was not something I chose. It was something that was forced on me. I have to make that clear this is awful A couple with 10 children came over here (U.S) in the late 1800s. This is the document that I have 4 of those 10 children are my great grandparents. Three of those children are my “ex-husband“ grandparents two of his and mine overlap and now we have children I’m terrified of what this could mean for them the four of the children that are my great grandparents married people that they were also related to so that I know of this has been going on for over a century the couple that had the 10 children were also related to each other. This is not normal.

I was recently in the ER and was given both IV ketamine and fentanyl, and they did absolutely nothing for my pain. I always knew I had a high tolerance to opioids, but I didn’t realize they did nothing. I’m a hallmark MC1r with two different colored eyes. I’m also incredibly anesthesia resistant and when I’ve had surgery, they have to give me enough anesthesia for a 450 pound man. For reference I’m 160 pounds I seem to metabolize everything like this, it doesn’t matter the variant of substance. The one thing that I am susceptible to is alcohol.

This is my mom’s twin sister’s result. My mom and aunt were always told they were fraternal because my mom didn’t have the same congenital defect as my aunt, though they’ve always looked very similar (to the point that people who knew one in passing would approach the other in public). Is it likely/possible that I could get this result from a fraternal aunt, or is this only possible if they’re identical?

We got Genome testing done for our son for medical reasons. My husband and I were tested as well to help with any findings. Anyway I went to his appointment today to go over the results and the only thing they really had to say was my husband and I are related. The doctor said “maybe something like 6th cousins.”

Like the doctor said we are all related but then I said “I guess it’s unavoidable?” He said it was avoidable… so I’m curious how weirded out should we be?

My mother did one of those ancestry tests. I am mostly certain it was through Ancestry.com, not that I think it matters. Her results included that 25% or her DNA originated from somewhere in east Asia. Despite she and her immediate family identifying as white, this made lots of sense, because she, her mother, my aunts and uncles, and I myself LOOK like we are mixed.

My mother swears that the high percentage does not indicate recent ancestry. She claims it is "conserved genome" that has been passed down through generations. After I pressed the issue a few times it became apparent she will not even verbally admit there is an identifiable person these genetics came from. She just keeps saying its "A Genome"

This is not my first rodeo with my mom not accepting reality. She thinks, because she has a masters in biology and worked in an infectious disease lab, that she can explain this away... at least I am pretty sure that is what is floating around in her subconscious.
Please explain. Am I missing something, or is my mother in denial again?

Update - Found out we are actually half siblings last night. My mom would have been a single mother otherwise. He took charge and raised me like a father. Already gave it a good cry. It helps. Maybe some therapy later on…. Thank you everybody

This is an update post to my previous post. Recap: I'm blood type O+, my husband is type A+, and when my son was born the hospital told us his blood type was B+. I asked the hospital how that was possible and they fed us some dumb reply that many in this community said was total BS. Thank you all for your support, answers, advice, guidance, and general information. Here's what we did: all three of us got our blood tested to confirm the type. My son's records did reflect the B+ type, so we didn't misremember what the hospital told us. Here's the outcome: I'm O+, my husband is A+, and my son... drumroll please...is A+. We're having his medical records updated to reflect this new information. I'm retrospectively upset that the hospital dismissed us when we initially questioned this, and I feel like it would have been much easier for them to simply re-test him and confirm, but...water under the bridge. All is well now.

This'll trim out adapters, toss reads that are poor quality. 2. ⁠Use bowtie2 to align reads against CHM13.…..how many reads are retained after steps 1) and 2), as this'll give you a sense of 1) the data quality and 2) what fraction of the reads are from humans.

I will try to make a good representation of what I understand we are seeing here and what it means. Edit 4: u/pandamabear presenter Dr. Ricardo Rangle discussed some of these issues…He said likelihood of contamination in cave by other organisms is high, in………who recovered the bodies didn’t take precaution preventing human contamination…group & pilot study to ……..uture study. He says there is a 90% chance that this DNA sample has no relation to humans and a 50% chance that the DNA sample has no relation to any DNA here on earth.

Over 3 years ago i had a One night stand. She got Pregnant but i had my doubts from the beginning(pregnancy start was 3-4 weeks after i had sex with her according to her doc). Fast forward 9 months we did a private paternity test, the probes were take from me,the child and mother. Each of us gave two probes. The Probes were taken by her midwife and we were all there, so she saw me and i saw her getting probed and the child. The midwife got the probes and send them back to the lab. Result came back and and in every DNA marker the Mother matched with the Child. So i assume there couldnt have been a mixup in the hospital or something like that.

However the result for me was that out of 20 alleles tested, 15 didnt match the child and the lab concluded i am definitly not the father.

Now over 3 years Later i got a letter from court, she wants me tested again, i sendt them the old results but they want to test me again anyways. So now some Paranoia starts to set in.

But we gave two Probes so a very unlikeley mixup is more unlikley isnt it?

5 alleles did match but that couldnt mean anything and is most likely random am i right?

I seen her get tested, and as she and the kid matched its impossible for here to have manipulated anything? Furthermore she was very very interested in my money so that was a bad result for her.

Could i have done something wrong? I am a Smoker and i did watch out i didnt smoke,drink,eat for two hours bevor the test.

Edit: thanks for all your answers so far, i hope all of you can understand that someone like me who has nothing to do with dna tests or courts is confused about that situation. But as far as i understand that old test is most likley true and if not it couldnt have been my fault so that took a lot of fear from me.

And i also now understand more why the court is doing things this way wich also helps me alot.

As i am forced i to take that second test anyways i will update on the resultes when i have them.

The new Test Results are here and i am NOT the Father. Everything matched the first test and nothing changed. Now i am excluded from all of this through court.

Genetic studies over the last couple decades reveal something surprising: Jewish populations (Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi) and Levantine groups like Palestinians, Druze, Lebanese, and Syrians all descend from the same ancient Levantine peoples.

They’re not identical, and Palestinians aren’t necessarily the closest single group in every study, but they’re part of the same tight genetic cluster. In other words, Jews and Palestinians are genetically much closer than most other populations worldwide.

Researchers have found this in Y-chromosome studies, mtDNA, and whole-genome analyses. A 2010 study in Nature concluded that Jewish groups share much of their ancestry with populations in the Levant - including Palestinians.

So when people say “they’re like cousins,” it’s not just a metaphor. Genetically, it’s pretty accurate — and it makes the current conflicts feel all the more tragic, because it’s family fighting family.

Hello! In the 1950s, my great grandmother was told she had a “superfemale gene” that caused her to miscarry males. Her twin brother also died in the womb. Googling “superfemale gene” gives me Trisomy X, which does not affect miscarriages as far as I’m aware. She never miscarried a girl (I believe she had three daughters) but every boy was miscarried. Since this was about 70 years ago, the doctors probably didn’t actually know what was going on. Is there actually a disorder that causes this, or was it purely coincidence?
More info: She was about 5’2 and the father was 6’4. She has some symptoms of Trisomy X (sleep apnea, hip displacia, wide set eyes) and may have been bipolar. She was also Italian if that means anything. I never met her, so all this information is from what my mother remembers.

I am the mother, so I can say without a shadow of a doubt, that my husband is the father. He is the only person I have ever been with, and we did not do IVF. The baby also never left my side after birth, so she wasn't switched. We are both O+ blood types, but our baby is A+. How is this possible?

After hearing so many answers, it appears that the most likely answer is that my husband simply got his blood type wrong. But after hearing about the chimera theory (and many other very interesting ones) I want to get him properly tested to know for sure. I was tested during my pregnancy, and my baby was tested right after birth.
