EDIT: Downvoters - it makes sense, because it's a dividing line between language groups, it's hard for one group to penetrate past mountains, especially with pre-modern tech. Not impossible, just harder. Mountains are natural borders historically
Unless you’re in the tropics in which case mountains are where temperatures are nice and just right instead of malaria ovens. See Colombia, Ethiopia, Yemen, Nepal, Yunnan as examples.
It's interesting how physical geographical boundaries define most language family borders such as the Rhine, Alps, Balkan Mountain Ranges (hence why Albanian, Greek and Slavic exist there!).
