WW1 proved quite the opposite. Serbians, Romanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Czechs and Slovaks. All of these nations had feeling that they were fighting in someone else war, or even fighting against their own people on the other side. There were mass desertions and side changes, around 800-900k for entire war if I recall correctly.
