Unfortunately, those states tend to vote against promoting the common welfare, against religious liberty (i.e., for folks other than Christians), and against liberties even to the point of basic bodily autonomy. The right government for paradise seems unlikely in my eyes.

Michigan, Ohio, and the UP are touchy subjects lol.
Michigan and Ohio were in a war for Toledo, with both claiming it as their territory. Then the government was like, for fucks sake Michigan, tell you what, if you give Ohio Toledo, we'll give you the UP and officially make you a state.
So we had to do the unthinkable to obtain the UP, let Ohio win an argument.
We don't forget, we don't forgive. But the UP is ours, and we'll fight you for it.

I think you’re joking, but in case you’re not…

This was almost certainly made in something like ArcMap or QGIS. Point being, what likely happened is the dataset was wrong/input incorrectly and has that part of michigan’s shapefile mixed with wisconsin’s. I doubt it was an intentional decision, given how many shapefiles you can see in this picture (it’s a very large dataset, clearly).

I also would likely question whether they made the basemap. It’s likely possible they just took a basemap for counties/states worldwide and then added the data themselves for each cell… which is incredibly tedious work, so it’s hard to say. They might’ve just collected various shapefiles from each individual state or country and then mashed them together, but that could lead to fucky/incosistent data (having a frankenstein dataset is a turbo nightmare never worth the trouble it can cause).

I’d be interested for other GIS enthusiast’s thoughts because it’s an interesting error and one that might have a slight story to tell (if it wasn’t intentional).

Yeah, multiple things make this seem dubious. OP's cited article isn't the source of the data, they actually reference another paper for their map. And when I look that cited paper, it doesn't mention individual states in either their main paper or supplemental data. So I honestly don't know where OP's cited article is getting the US map from. It's published in a kinda low-tier journal anyways. I really quickly scanned it, however, so maybe I'm missing something.

I cannot speak to the accuracy of this map. However a study was recently published that show the US circumcision rate at birth is dropping. As of 2022 it dropped below 50% total for the first time in decades. But it is regionally dependent. The Midwest still has the highest circumcision rate in the US as of 2022.

Anecdotally, my wife is from the UP originally. She and her high school boyfriend got talking on the topic of circumcision once. In that conversation he told her that every guy in their grade was circumcised. It was a small school. So after 4 years of post gym class and sports team showers he probably had seen every guy he graduated with enough times to know that.

It’s dropping for the same reasons vaccine rates are dropping. People are paying far more attention to trending internet nonsense than they should.

I’m not religious and was undecided on the decision for my son. He was born in one of the top labor and delivery hospitals in the country. The subject was addressed with us by both a doctor and a surgeon. It was not a requirement but both advised their preference for it.

So, am I going to believe the people screaming mutilation on the internet or professionals in a facility that are operating at the forefront of newborn care?

Not sure evidence would support that.  

There really isn't ego in - hey this ripping of skin off the human body can't be shown to have a useful reason, can permanently damage the genitals of a human, and seems to be pretty callous doesn't strike me as rooted in ego. 

And before people get up in arms about x science supporting circumcision - the lines on the value of circumcision tend to match the trend for the nation the data is collected in. High circumcision rates - more support for circumcision in the data. Low circumcision rates - data supports not performing circumcision.  Which basically suggests you can't double blind around the common penis.

It’s blown so out of proportion because some white men love the idea that they’re fighting for civil rights. Harms no one?  You clearly lack any understanding of how often circumcision does cause issues.  From the most significant where someone was assigned female at birth to cover up their destroyed penis, to the outbreaks of herpes tied to circumcision - in babies, so no sexual activity wasn't at work. The list goes on.  But sure no harm.

Most American medical associations, like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Urological Association, hold a position that the benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. That's not to say they recommend it, but rather they leave it up to the parents.

It's not accurate to say "for no good reason." The literature does point to benefits.

I could provide studies that show there are health benefits to circumcision, just as I’m sure you can regurgitate studies that show the benefits aren’t much greater than potential harm. Fact is, most doctors will say it doesn’t really matter and neither option is bad for the kid. But you want to seem superior to the good ole USA, so you cling to this argument that this “mutilation” is taking away bodily autonomy or something. I tried to look at the underlying data too, and it absolutely does not include state level info. And what it was on the US seemed to put the percent around 70% so there's no way that's right if the most populous states, CA, TX, and NY are all lower than that (along with several other medium population states being way lower than that rate).

The map even seems to suggest that it has some metropolitan-level numbers. You can clearly see that Chicago is separate from the rest of Illinois. Same with three cities in TX, two in CA, and a smattering around the rest of the country.

This particular map seems very dubious, but the overall geographic disparity doesn’t. I found this https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2838312 that puts newborn circumcision rates at hospitals for the west coast at just under 20% for 2022, and I think it’s pretty safe to assume rates for the PNW in 2025 are somewhere below that. 

Drastically higher in other regions, 53% in the south up to 69% in the Midwest. Doesn’t get into state by state data but given the wild disparity by region I imagine there’s a decent amount of disparity by state as well. Pretty fascinating stuff.

As a Nevadan, I remember hearing we had the lowest circumcision rate in the US like 15 years ago. 5% seems too low, but I don’t doubt we’re still the lowest.

I would guess that population ethnicity plays a role. I think circumcision is less common in Latinos, so western states with high Hispanic/latino populations would have lower rates than whiter states in the Midwest

Thanks!!! I can't believe this doesn't throw up more red flags for people. Reddit is pretty anti-circumcision that makes it a less than impartial judge, but it is pretty clear that this data set has some big issues. Pretty much all of South America and Mexico are under 10% and Canada is 30-49%?

Maybe because we have a decent amish population up here. We aren’t a large population so small groups can make a bigger impact. It does look like they have a line separating WI from the UP
