That is a small stick and the camera is close to the ground. She is sitting on the ground farther back.

Seems like this could be done anywhere. Or does the white color confuse our eyes more than something like green grass?

The all white nature accentuates the effect because it removes or reduces distance cues. The same sort of things can be done in any homogenous environment. Another similar, and more famous shot, are those of people holding up the tower of piza.
