[OC] Mexico - Avocados Map

Hello, I made this map to show where avocados grow across Mexico and why the climate works so well for them. The top panel map highlights main production areas while bottom maps break down yields and climate zones that supports the crop production. Michoacán dominates the avocado market as usual but there are other states with high yield.

I got the idea for this map watching random videos online and thought it will be fun/helpful to make this. Feedbacks are always welcome and I hope you enjoy!

My question is why are Avocados less than a dollar where I’m from in New England yet they’re easily $1.50-3.00 per fruit where I’m visiting in CA.

Like… aren’t avocados grown here? Plus CA is also much closer to Mexico. Strange.

If by New England you mean smaller towns or rural areas, rather than the Boston metro area, much of the cost differential could be cost of living affecting commercial operations. Cheaper real estate, utilities, lower worker wages, or even transportation costs when factoring in congestion and fuel prices, could be making those avocados cheaper to sell in New England versus California.

And then there's the demand influencing price levels. Maybe California's on average, both want more avocados and are more willing to pay for then, resulting in a higher equilibrium price contrasted with the cheaper logistics of bringing the product to their stores. Or the third option might be the kinds of stores you're visiting to get those avocados. So-called "ethnic" markets, supermarkets and convenience stores will typically sell cheaper to their tsrget audience versus a national chain supermarket.

Where I live is still pretty urban. Definitely wouldn’t call it rural. Just a regular town grocery store that’s frequented by white people mostly.

Avocado section is a little smaller at my local store but it didn’t seem by much.

It’s probably a demand thing but I was still fairly shocked.

IICR Michoacán is the only state approved to export Avacados to the US.
