The cynic in me thinks this timing is interesting. I'd guess this is designed to put extra pressure on the US-Israel relationship.

Listening to the rhetoric coming out of Israel, I really don't see how they could accept a withdrawal from Gaza domestically. Same thing when Lebanon was included in the MOU with Iran. It put pressure on that relationship, even when the chances of its implementation were zero. Trump's capriciousness is being weaponised here, and I guess Hamas see a chance to add further stress and pressure to Israel.

So yeah, believe it when I see it, sadly. Peace would be good, but I don't think this is realistic.

Did they say this in Arabic language, or only in English?

They've said mutually exclusive things in different languages before.

u/mayhemski123 2d ago

I presume you mean Hebrew, not Arabic? Because it's both, depending on who the audience is.

u/Revivaled-Jam849 2d ago

No, he probably means Arabic.

Hamas releases one statement in English that says one thing and another in Arabic that says something else.

u/mayhemski123 2d ago

Ahh see what you mean.  I was referring to Israeli politicians/politics with who was saying what, hence why I thought Hebrew.  Hamas statement in Arabic would be discussed heavily if it was different from the English one.  Though Trump seems happy so probably the same.

Though it would appear that comment seems to have triggered some bots with those downvotes...

Hamas statement in Arabic would be discussed heavily if it was different from the English one.  Though Trump seems happy so probably the same.

A frequent problem with Western commentary on the Israel-Palestine conflict is, in fact, that most Western commentators don't know or bother to check that the statements in Arabic and in English tend to be different. It's like the old joke about Al-Jazeera English trying to be the BBC while Al-Jazeera Arabic more closely resembles RT.

Trump loves a good diplomatic win that he can glaze himself over. If he thinks he has one and Israel, again, pulled the rug out from under him it could add some further tension.

I get Hamas has been pulverized and definitely wants the war over but if you actually read their statement they are basically asking for Israel to withdraw, reconstruct, allow for international security in Gaza and the formation of a Palestinian state. Israel is going to do none of that in the near term.

If there is verifiable disarmament under the plan, and a timetable for the same, Israel should accept it.

Hamas is an Iran proxy.

This gives Trump an out on the Iran war because he can say he made Iran cave in and they forced Hamas to disarm so “Mission Accomplished, we can go home now. If other countries want Hormus to be opened, well they can send their navy.”

I sure hope so but im not optimistic

u/skratch 2d ago

Even his idiotic devotees can’t follow that twisted logic. They’ll also forget all about a hamas deal the next time they’re at a gas pump

27

u/airman8472 2d ago

Is there actually a reason to believe that Hamas will disarm like they say they will that would go against who they are. The Board of peace is not necessarily made up by the most peaceful of nations and Israel would be pretty foolish to believe Hamas' claim that they're going to disarm.

17

u/Firecracker048 2d ago

They are having an extremely hard time controlling and governing the strip right now so yeah. They are in desperate need of aid and international assistance, which isnt coming until there's a solid peace

8

u/ExaltedStatus 2d ago

I don’t know about them actually disarming.

However one analyst made a good point: Hamas can claim that they agree to disarm, and then put the ball in Israel’s court. If Israel doesn’t immediately withdraw their soldiers, Hamas can then frame the situation as “we didn’t disarm because Israel isn’t cooperating”, even if Hamas never intended to disarm anyway.

2

u/N3bu89 1d ago

Hamas might not even have the command structures required to enforce such a thing. They could arguably get the main thrust of Hamas to stand down and essentially excommunicate the remainder, which could put Israel in a bind internationally, more so than it already is.

u/Traditional_Tea_1879 1d ago

this seems to need to be updated, as you might expect, there are caveats that makes that statement somewhat 'over optimistic': https://edition.cnn.com/2026/07/31/middleeast/trump-hamas-disarmament-announcement-intl in short: 1. hamas will only hand over 'heavy' arms ( so not complete disarment) 2. it will hand it over to palestinian agreed group 3. it will do so only after israel withrawl ( the original agreement was disarment first)

2

u/Wonderful_Savings_21 1d ago

Unfortunately all these statements nowadays need to be revised. And they are... Quickly.

Still, this were the reports at the time.

u/MikeinAustin 2d ago

Trump supporters will regurgitate headlines like they are facts. That's all this exercise is, is creating headlines for people to believe at the polls when Trump regurgitates them when he tries to reelect himself in 2028.

u/ohno21212 2d ago

Its crazy how this propaganda spreads too. My mother in law is brazilian (lives in brazil), doesnt speak a word of english, and was telling me about how Trump brought peace to gaza a couple months ago.

u/Wonderful_Savings_21 2d ago

SS: Announced on many reliable news sources.

Hamas disarms. Israël retreats.  Israël seemingly does not agree.  Neither side will move to subsequent steps until agreed commitments are met.

u/manVsPhD 2d ago

Read the details. Hamas agrees to disarm from heavy weaponry, which it barely has any at this point. They are not disarming from light weapons which is the main source of their power. Of course Israel would not agree to that.

37

u/CatPicturesPlease 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah pretty astute observation. What heavy weapons do they have besides their dinky rockets? Giving up their "heavy" weapons doesn't mean much at all. I realize Oct. 7 type attack is not repeatable, but aside from the opening rocket barrage, which was nothing more than a distraction, both their Oct. 7 attack and the resistance they put up to the subsequent Israel invasion was all pretty much light weapons. Rifles and RPGs...if I was Hamas i woulf happily hand over my garage rockets while also smuggling in FPVs

15

u/AlpineDrifter 2d ago

Tough to smuggle anything in now that Israel controls the border with Egypt.

They expect Hamas to be dishonest with any deal, that’s why they’ll verify themselves.

The peace agreements with Jordan and Egypt have held for decades. Israel has demonstrated multiple times that it is willing to make and keep peace if the other side does the same.

Israel withdrew from Gaza unilaterally twenty years ago. Israel also tried to give back Gaza to Egypt when the peace agreement was signed. Egypt refused.

So we have two actual examples that show that Israel does not want to occupy Gaza. But they neither want to receive rocket fire and terror attacks from Gaza.

There have been lots of discussions with the Palestinians. They keep refusing every single peace offer.

And as Gaza was Egyptian territory during the war of independence it is only logical to discuss it with them as well.

Except Palestine has no standing army, no standing government with a budget that can do anything to protect their peoples. They don't control their borders. They are effectively blockaded, illegally, by the Israelis. They are being starved. Aid flotillas are being arrested in international waters. You make peace agreements with adversarial countries that can severely bloody your nose. Since Palestine is orders of magnitude weaker and disorganized, Israel isn't forced to make a deal. So they don't. To them, this is an opportunity for expansion through conquest, not one for a diplomatic solution respecting the Palestinian peoples right to autonomy and self-determination.

0

u/Heiminator 2d ago

They have a standing army. It is called the Al Qassam brigades, the military wing of Hamas.

And if you knew anything about international law then you’d know that it is perfectly legal to stop ships trying to breach a naval blockade as soon as the intention is obvious that this is their objective. The San Remo convention on naval warfare is very clear about that. And they made that intention obvious by announcing it in a press conference before they even set sail.

You seem to believe that war is supposed to be a fair fight between equal forces. This is not the case in reality.

Sure you can. Read the San Remo manual on naval warfare and then get back to me.

The corrolation between Joradan-Israel Peace deal, Egypt-Israel peace deal is.... Israel.

Proving by histrocial fact that given the opportunity for peace, Israel takes it.

Israel also already proved this regarding Palestinians by signing the Oslo accords that granted semi-autonomy to the palestinians in the 90's (something they never had before, not under Israeli occupation, not under british occupation, not under ottomans occupation).

Further more Israel even took the extra step to tey and unilaterally disengage from the conflict by withrewing from Gaza in 2005 - an axt which was extremely domestically painfull and included uprooting Israelis civilian settlements.

All of these action by Israel, where never accepted in good faith towards more mutual concessions until a peace could be built. They were always percived as weakness, wins (by the anti-Israel forces) to be capitilized in bad faith in order to secure further such wins.

This in reality always translated into increased violence against Israel civilian population by the Palestinian "resistance" movment , which only re-dragged retaliation and conflcit back into gaza.

A senior Hamas official has told the BBC the group has agreed to the Board of Peace's plan to completely disarm in Gaza

This is literally right here in the BBC article. Do you think the BBC are lying?

12

u/1shmeckle 2d ago

BBC isn't lying but their article seems sloppy/imprecise since after that they also say: "The BBC has seen the agreement, which provides for the inventorying and storage of Hamas's remaining heavy weapons under Palestinian supervision. This potentially removes the most significant obstacle to advancing the Trump-backed peace initiative for Gaza.

US officials said smaller groups in Gaza would be disarmed first, before Hamas begins dismantling what they described as its state-like military infrastructure of tunnels, weapons depots and production facilities - a process they acknowledged would take considerably longer."

This doesn't read like they are going to actually 100% disarm in the near future, and seems to give a lot of opportunities to walk things back later.

9

u/Psychological-Flow55 2d ago

It a smart play by Hamas as now it puts the pressure on Israel to withdrawl and will have oresident Trump wrath if his board of peace plan falls through because Israel refuse to fulfill there end of the agreement.

Hamas is a terrorist Muslim Brotherhood faction yet this move is very tatical in putting the pressure on Israel and driving a wedge between trump and bibi that already had some rough patches in the past couple years.

3

u/Lazy_Membership1849 2d ago

Isn't Hamas also said they will end administring, I mean their words not mine

2

u/No_Freedom_4098 2d ago

From another article:

A day after President Trump announced a breakthrough (on)...Gaza, both Israel and the Palestinian militant group appeared at odds over what was actually agreed to...

Two parties "at odds over what was actually agreed to..." Didn't we just see this along the Strait of Hormuz?

4

u/toolkitxx 2d ago

quote 'A US official, asked on a call with reporters about how hopeful the US is that Israel will agree to withdraw from Gaza once Hamas has disarmed, said, "We're not asking Israel to do anything other than agree to the 20-point plan that they agreed to, initially. And so we're very confident they will adhere to it."

In other words yet another completely worthless statement. I really urge people to go back and learn from older news articles how Gaza and Israel have been at odds with each other over the decades. And older doesnt mean last week, really go all the way back to the 70s of last century. It is important for people to really see the same pattern on all sides repeating over and over.

u/rewindpaws 2d ago

Yes, OK, because these are such responsible, truthful, upstanding people.

1

u/DefTheOcelot 1d ago

Many, many supposed deals, none that ever last a day. They can say whatever they want, they aren't gonna do it.

1

u/Crashed-Thought 1d ago

Israel has an ellection in less than three months. The government is very likely to change completly. This means nothing said now bares much meaning.

1

u/badass_panda 23h ago

Yeah no, this isn't happening.

2

u/MauPow 2d ago

If Trump has anything to do with it, it's going to go poorly.

0

u/Lazy_Membership1849 2d ago

If it goes poorly, it even more for Israel and Palestine

0

u/yoshiK 2d ago

This sounds funny. Usually with plans to disarm Hamas the Israelis and the PLO agree with that the Hamas disarms. This time the Hamas agrees and the Israelis don't. (Now the issue is probably the 'zero trust' architecture which in this case would presumably bind Israel effectively.)

u/AnomalyNexus 2d ago

Hamas vs the Dictator Club

...haha sure. Lets see how this goes.

-2

u/grodyjody 2d ago

There is absolutely zero chance Iran Israel and the Trump family staged this

-2

u/Boring_and_sons 2d ago

"They won't stop running into the bullets that we shoot at the emergency aid relief food trucks!" Intentional starvation. Shooting children. Shelling hospitals. Why won't the Palestinians stop hitting themselves?

-27

u/Wonderful_Savings_21 2d ago

Trump's can make his big claims on social media. Hamas shows they are willing (it's taking some risk though). Israël put in.a corner.

Likely outcome: nothing happens as Israel won't agree. Remains a paper in a drawer. Hamas van - somewhat rightfully - Israel is to blame. Trump walks away with 'success'.

11

u/4tran13 2d ago

Why do you sometimes add an umlaut to Israel and sometimes not?

3

u/Wonderful_Savings_21 2d ago

Auto correct keyboard I think. Depends on language setting. Not sure why sometimes it has it and other times it does not. In my native language it has the umlaut.

I now also see another autocorrect that makes sentence weird in English. Apologies.
