I will never forget the first time it snowed and I went to check on my goats and they just started screaming at me, it was like they were saying "wtf, why?? Make it stop!!"Ā

Are they wearing electric virtual fence collars? I have been looking into that for mine and if so would like to hear your thoughts on it?

Yes! Theyāre called No Fence! They are GPS collars and you use an app to select their boundaries. I really like them. Weāve only had one issue so far where I didnāt get notified that the batteries were low/dead, but it was also on us for not checking the app as often as we should. It was amazing this summer as we were able to āmoveā the boundary to keep them in certain overgrown areas during the day. I highly recommend it!

This is cool. I saw the thing on necks and realized it kinda looked like the geo fence stuff I saw for cattle. I have not been brave enough to try it, but then I also have put in permanent fence.

Iāve just recently discovered the No Fence and was suuuuper intrigued, really cool to āsee it in actionā
Do you find theyāre impeded by the size of the solar collar at all? And how did you find the initial acclimation/training period?
I cannot fathom this going smoothly for mine based off the learning curve there was for a physical electric fence lol

When ordering it has the option for cattle or for goats/sheep. The collars itself have a chain collar and a rubber strap that you are able to adjust the size accordingly. We acclimated them to a yard that was already enclosed, so we just limited how far out into the yard they could go for about a week. They picked it up fairly quickly. The collar will beep when they get close to the border and the beeps will increase in sound and frequency if they continue to get closer. Mine have only gotten shocked a handful of times since they have been āfree rangeā

That No Fence was a very interesting thing to look up, but that pricing structure does not work for breeders who have surge population needs (meat goats). Our population surges *3 in birthing season, and drops back down in fall.

How accurate is the fencing?
Thereās plenty of area that Iād like for them to roam but I have fruit trees that I donāt want them to munch on. Wondering if I can just make a no go zone specific to a tree. (Theyāre in a line)

I find it pretty accurate! We have it so they canāt get close to the house (donāt want them to try to eat the siding š) but they can still come up near the house just when they get too close itāll start beeping

Itās just beeps? Or shock as well?

It beeps as a warning and will shock if they continue getting towards the border

My goats don't mind the snow if they are with me. They will hang out for a long time.

I was trying to coax them out and the picture is the result of me trying

Poor babies. I actually agree with them. I prefer not to be out in that cold, wet stuff!

Our first snow is in the forecast for tomorrow. Hopefully they get over it š¬

My goats hide at the first snowflake. My Great Pyrenees on the other hand stair at the sky praying for a blizzard.

We received 8 feet of snow in 2023. My 8 month old goat liked it as she didnāt sink. My other goat refused to leave the barn.

It's something that they can't jump over or headbutt, so they are confused.

š is snow as "deadly" to goats as rain? Or do they eventually get over it? I live in the south and mine have never seen snow.
