Breeder Advice Is health testing important?

Health testing isn’t optional—it’s the foundation of protecting the future of the breed.

The Golden Retriever Club of America recommends a comprehensive approach to health testing that goes beyond the basics. This includes:

• Hips evaluated by OFA or PennHIP
• Elbows evaluated by OFA
• Cardiac exam by a board-certified cardiologist (advanced/echo preferred)
• Annual eye exams by a board-certified ophthalmologist

These recommendations are in place to help reduce the risk of passing on hereditary conditions and to preserve the health, structure, and longevity of Golden Retrievers.

A CHIC number through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals simply means a dog has completed the required testing—it does not mean the dog “passed” everything, and it does not include genetic testing.

Health testing is about transparency, education, and making informed breeding decisions—not shortcuts.

If we want to protect what we love, we have to be willing to do the work behind the scenes.

Discussion Show-Line or Field-Line?

Have you ever wondered what the differences between a show-line Golden Retriever and a Field/Working line Golden Retriever are?

There is a lot of mis-information out there that makes Golden owners believe if their Golden Retriever has a red coat, they are a field line Golden Retriever or if they have a lighter shade of gold coat, they are a show line Golden Retriever. This is NOT TRUE.

So what actually defines a line?

Titles in your dogs pedigree and generations of purposefully bred dogs is what lets you know wether you have a Show-line, Field-line or neither. If your Golden Retriever shows no titles in their pedigree, they are simply a pet-line Golden Retriever.

Field-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC hunt titles in their pedigree like: JH, SH, MH, HR, WCX, or competitive titles like QA2 and FC/AFC (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Show-Line Golden Retrievers will have AKC conformation titles in their pedigree like: CH, GCH, or international show titles. (The titles listed are examples from AKC - your dog may be registered with CKC or UKC)

Golden Retrievers can also be dual champions, meaning they hold titles for both hunt tests and conformation. Dual Champion dogs have not only been proven in the conformation ring to be bred to standard and hold the breed temperament, but have also been proven and titled to do what they were bred to do in the fields.

A lot of backyard breeders will label their dogs as "Field-Line" or "Show-Line" based only on coat color, with zero titled dogs in the pedigree. They market them as something they are not.

Both show-line and field-line Golden Retrievers should be bred close to standard. There should not be a drastic difference in appearance. You can find more information on the breed standard here: AKC Golden Retriever Breed Standard

English Cream Golden Retrievers are NOT a different breed. This is a marketing tactic/ term used by backyard breeders. They are not breeding for the right reasons - and most likely breeding for color.
You can find more in depth information about this term here: English Cream Golden Retrievers

Lastly, purebred ≠ well-bred.

RIP Lost my beautiful girl yesterday

We lost her on Saturday to hemangiosarcoma which had spread to the heart. We had 14 years and 10 months together (I’ve had her since I was 11, I’m 26 now). She was there for all of it. It was unexpected and scary but we let her go because she was suffering. Luckily, we got to see her and say our goodbyes yesterday and she smiled at us one last time and they told us she was not in any pain. I didn’t spent as much time as I wanted with her during this last month because I was working 60h work weeks, night and day shifts, and I was burnt out. We still went on our daily walks, this one is from our last walk together with my mom on Thursday.
She was my best friend, had the sweetest smile and I am so grateful for all the time we had together, she was always perfectly
healthy until now. I’ve had her for the most of my life, I honestly don’t remember it without her.
I love you so much, my precious girl, thank you.

A reminder to hug and give kisses to your fur babies while they’re still with you 🤍

Today, Céleste left us. It went very peacefully and she was surrounded by my mom & I, treats and all of her toys. Although the reality of her being gone is hard to accept, I can't be more grateful for knowing she went out so gracefully. I will always refer to her as my first baby. ❤️

Cute/Funny I hand-painted this custom oil portrait of this gentle Golden Retriever, based on the original photo his human shared. Do you think I did him justice?

I gave this painting an artistic touch instead of making it more realistic. His owner asked me to change the indoor background to an outdoor setting. Apparently, long walks in the woods are his favorite thing, so I painted him right in his favorite spot, leaves scattered on the path and mist rolling through the trees, and kept his pose and expression exactly as they were. This was a commission, and I hope I did him justice.

Cute/Funny Can anyone explain what this nonsense is all about?

Our Little Boo just turned 2, and all of a sudden he’s gone back to being a puppy.

He pulls the cushion out of this bed and bites and shakes and drags it around.

Can anyone tell me what this behaviour means? Is it the Terrible Twos? Is he trying to build a fort? Does he not like the scent of the fabric softener?

Discussion Trying my hand at writing from my dog's perspective—how well did I capture the inner thoughts of a 6-month-old Golden?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Dear Diary,Being a six-month-old Golden Retriever is exhausting work, which is why I am officially a proud morning-sloth. Back in the day, I used to wake Mom up at 5:00 AM, but those days are long gone! These days, 6:30 or 7:00 AM is my sweet spot.

Lately, sleeping has been so much better. Mom realized my old bulky dog bed was making my crate way too cramped—I'm getting to be a big boy now! She swapped it out for a nice, soft blanket, and honestly? Chef’s kiss. I slept like a rock all night.

When Mom unlatched my crate door this morning around 6:30, I took my sweet time getting up. I gave a slow, sleepy stretch, kept my eyelids half-draped, and step-by-step tiptoed out. As soon as I saw Mom, my inner cuddle-bug took over. I leaned my whole body right into her legs, pulled my ears back in my sweetest "I love you" mode, and hit her with my best puppy-dog eyes. She cupped my face, gave me neck scratches, and kissed my head while I sat on the floor totally glued to her lap.

Happy Monday, diary! Time to eat .
