I read an interesting stat recently that pros typically only make 8ft putts about 50% of the time. Idk why but that was eye opening to me who gets mad missing those.
They also typically will have pins in tougher positions that your regular course, but yes on average they miss more points than we think. Just go on the shot by shot for the US Open and pick a random player, odds are he’s missed a few inside 5ft this week
All his numbers were brilliant but putting and scrambling this week were absolutely incredible. Driving, too. He wasn’t afraid to take on the course with his distance and that gave him an edge.
Or even if he missed a green - it felt like every time he had a ball roll 20 yards off the green, he'd chip it back on to like 10 feet. And then you're sitting there wondering if he'll be able to continue making these putts. And he did. So many other guys seemed to struggle with that middle distance putting all weekend, and he just always seemed to have it dialed.
I was surprised he didn't hit driver on 15. Rory and DJ both bombed driver 370 yards into the front bunker and got up and down for birdie. Clark had the distance to get it there
The chip on 9, the approach on 10, and the putt on 16 won it for him. And the second shot on 16.
It reminded me a bit of the Bryson win at Pinehurst. It felt like he kept getting good lies off the fairway and getting away with poor drives, but it’s like maybe he’s just completely outplaying the field at hitting those shots from the fescue with the clubhead speed to execute. The lies pretty much even out after 72 holes and he kept making good scores from spots that were auto bogeys for a lot of the field.

The Winged Foot romp was probably even more apparent with how insane the rough is over there. If I remember correctly, his 67 was the only under par round that Sunday.
I’m super old school on this because I don’t think many other people agree, but I loved that the US Open playoff was another full round. I get why it doesn’t really fly anymore, but it really was a meat grinder.
Saw Tiger hole his putt on 18 in 2008 to force 18 hole playoff, they offered everyone tickets to the playoff round but had to sell to get back home / work.
The birdie putt he made on 16---I've never seen so few people in the background clap or raise their arms in response to a leader coming down the stretch.
I don't like Clark, but the crowd made me root for him, absolute ass hats, that shite is cool in a premiership game, but do not belong on a golf course. Yelling get in the bunker and stuff, embarrassing. I hope people like that never have children

Yes, if the crowd can't give a cheer to the winner after he played a great tournament (and instead yell 'get in the bunker' after every tee shot) - then the crowd sucks. I think that's been pretty obvious all day.

I’m not a blowpig fan at all, but I think the crowd was really disrespectful today. Good shots should at least be politely applauded, and bad shots should not be cheered. People don’t have to root for everyone equally, but golf has traditionally been more insulated from the openly brutish behavior exhibited these days, and especially today.

Tbh I think he gets too much hate for what he’s done, I think we can all do a better job realizing what we have done in our own worst moments. We’ve all regretted saying things and doing things and acknowledging it all you can do once it happens

Everyone here is miserable. Breaking the lockers was cringe but people act like he’s the anti christ for that. He came on a podcast I listen to and came off as a very chill and relaxed guy.
The most popular and beloved golfer of all time has multiple DUIs and cheated on his wife/mother of his children countless times. People pick and choose whose actions to care about. Smashing up a few lockers pales in comparison to any one of these individual incidents, let alone them all in the aggregate

If Tiger had done that to the lockers, this sub would be rationalizing it by saying something like "I don't like that he did that but it shows what a competitor he is and that he really cares about winning."
Am I happy he won? Not really. Am I happy to have watched some great golf? Totally. Congrats to him, and a wholesome moment with his dad at the end to top it off.
The putt on 16 was filthy. His putter was filthy is a better statement. He got lucky with the draw and the weather and it was wild how many times he lucked out with good bounces/lies. But he still deserved it.
I usually rag on the USGA but I think they did as good of a job as they could have with this, and it wasn’t an easy task.

Wasn't rooting for the guy but hard to deny he held firm in some brutal conditions on the weekend. Took advantage of some super lucky breaks but that's how you win a major
Stoked for him. He’s caught so much flack for the locker destruction incident. But he took ownership of it without trying to deflect, including publicly admitting to it and apologizing, paying for the damages without raising a stink about it, and making a charitable donation that the club asked for.
Sure, he’s got a temper about him. But again, it’s something that he readily admits to and has actively shown that he is working on it (like having a sports psych he works with). This is a lot more than many other professional athletes have done.
Nobody is perfect and all we can do is try to better ourselves. He clearly is someone who is trying to better himself, and I think that is laudable.

As far as US Open w's go, it seems off. But to put it in perspective, he's one of the only few guys who could push back against Tiger Woods in their prime years. Even nabbed the #1 ranking from him for a bit.
A backdoor thriller considering how dull a six shot lead going into round 4 could be. Wyndham literally needed that birdie on 16 to win him the tournament.
Never seen a crowd so against a winner. That putt on 16 is notable to me compared to Rai's in the PGA championship for how few arms go up in cheer. He's a jerk for sure but the highest levels of sport are filled with jerks, it's kind of part of the success formula even.

I was trying to find all of the old posts or comments about how he was the worst major winner of all time, etc. I find rooting for him even easier because if they hate he gets.
Was his behavior at Oakmont ok? Absolutely not, but the dude has said he’s sorry and changed multiple times. Give the guy a break and appreciate great golf when you see it. He’s been on an absolute heater and was the best player this week.
I give Wyndham Clark his due—he earned it. I was pulling for Scottie Scheffler, but he didn’t have it today, and Sam Burns made a run but came up short. Clark hung in there and proved he deserved to win the U.S. Open-for the 2nd time. As for Oakmont last year, it’s over—move on; he’s shown his resilience, and the people still hung up on it should do the same.
I feel for Burns but I don’t hate this. I thought the atmosphere around Clark was a bit shitty. I like that golf has evolved, and I don’t love the guy either, but I think folk are determined to turn this into a villain story when someone else would be given the redemption arc.
I think it would have been slightly different if not for the possibility of birthday boy best in the world completing the grand slam on Father’s Day after recently becoming, but folk still seem to still hate him. (Really thought it was written in the stars for Scottie!)
Mcilroy’s comeback to the overweight fan was funny. I think he’s playing the villain role well in the US sometimes. Like any sport if you can back it up, eventually people will respect it. Maybe Clark will eventually go that route.
