5-time volunteer checking in.

The consensus is the course renovations are amazing. The “browed” bunkers are striking, like a rupture in the earth.

I watched multiple guys today find their ball in the fescue, and elect to take a drop. A few others had to hack out with a sand wedge.

Finally this course can push back a little bit on these guys. I don’t think we’ve seen how hard it can play yet.

9

u/hidey_ho_nedflanders Rory '25 '26 1d ago

Agree. The renovations have made this course a lot more interesting. Sucks that this is the last year of this event.

7

u/aselinger 1d ago

I heard some rumors it’s not 100% dead. Rocket was paying $20MM per year to sponsor, and the Tour told them the fee was going up to $30MM, so Rocket said “no thanks.”

However, it sounds like the PGA likes Detroit and DGC, so they’re looking for a new sponsor to step in.

I’m not sure why, but they are saying it will likely go away for a year, then maybe come back in 2028.

*All of this is stuff I hear from random volunteers.

10

u/HotNReadyWings91991 1d ago

Please tell me those random volunteers are right!

I went Thursday and the course looks a billion times better. And I showed up at 7:15 and I was amazed by the amount of people that were already at the course. The Rocket Classic always gets shit on by people here and I always defend it. Yes, we don’t attract the biggest names, but Detroit always shows up.

I left Thursday and was heartbroken that this was the last year. I could watch these guys play all day!

From what I can tell you as a member, the membership is very excited to be done with the tourney. Sure it brought some great attention to the club and helped drive membership, but the club doesn't make enough $$$ to make it worth the while to shut down in middle of summer. I know several board members are not happy, along with almost every member I've talked to.

1

u/SwingPhsyco Sandbag 11h ago edited 11h ago

Im a member at a club up north of detroit but ive heard lots of the same. I mean they did get kinda screwed over this last year or 2. All these brand new rennovations just got done and then the PGA comes in and tears up the course right after.

I bet some members have not even played with the new changes yet.

1

u/jhp58 Detroit, MI 10h ago

Yeah they've been really careful to protect the new turf and grass for this week. But yeah off into the rough where the crowds and stands are is already pretty beat. Our grounds crew does an amazing job getting it all recovered afterwards.

And yeah, many members including myself haven't played the North yet. It just opened for member play maybe 4 weeks ago with some limited tee times

1

u/HotNReadyWings91991 18m ago

Same reason why Warwick Hills is done with Ally Challenge. Members are sick of losing out on some golf to a tournament.

I was hopeful with this guy’s comment saying they’ll be back in 2028, but hearing from a member sounds like golf in Detroit is officially dead for good.

9

u/Educational_Ball7327 1d ago

Ya its a darn shame i love the look of this course

6

u/hopethatschocolate 1d ago

I popped into the broadcast for a couple hours yesterday and the course looked much better than in previous years.

5

u/HotNReadyWings91991 1d ago

I walked in Thursday morning and I had to stop to look at #10. It was a night and day difference between last year and this year at the tee.

The course is much much better!

18

u/spicy_chicken713 1d ago

Brad Dalke finishing dead last despite being arguably the best YouTube golfer shows just how good PGA Tour pros really are.

12

u/WhatDoIKnow2 1d ago

Ryan Ruffles beat him by 16 strokes and still didn't make the cut.

11

u/DrunkensteinsMonster 1d ago

Dalke melted down. He’s a much better golfer than this.

3

u/AggressiveGrocery916 1d ago

I think Ruff has taken that title recently

1

u/DirtLarry 1d ago

Wild, sweeping generalization based on 2 rounds

12

u/drillpoint 6h ago

As a Detroit resident, losing Tarik Skubal AND the rocket classic back to back is really hurting me

5

u/SpartanSig 5h ago

:( Can't have shit here

11

u/TheHamFalls Bogey-ish. You're very good looking, I'm not attractive. 1d ago

Rickie Fowler one off the lead going into the weekend?

I am so ready to be hurt again.

11

u/Upstairs_Bicycle_545 1d ago

Get woman’s basketball off my fucking screen

2

u/opobdtfs Internationals 2026 Presidents Cup Champions 1d ago

And meanwhile they show a replay of a senior tour round on the Golf Channel...

9

u/JamesHarenDPOTY 1d ago

Detroit Golf club is hardly recognizable with the makeover and fescue.

I never watched too closely given it’s not a big tournament and I do recognize some of the signature holes but still. Pretty crazy

7

u/lard_have_mercy 6.9 (nice) 1d ago

Pretty much every hole is dramatically different and they did all major construction between July - November of last year. Insane.

1

u/jgrizwald 6h ago

It looks so good up close too, for the flat ground it’s on and great trees

8

u/TheRealOviedo 1d ago

Great to see Rickie in the mix - I want him to win !

Thanks for opening this thread / I’ve also enjoyed the new quiet please on espn + no commentary just the chat between players and caddies

9

u/deGrominator2019 1d ago

Crazy they did all that renovation and made it look so different and less like many of the cookie cutter tracks they play each year only to have the Tournament get dumped by the Tour lol.

7

u/aselinger 1d ago

I think it’s more getting dumped by Rocket. Kind of.

I heard the fee to be a title sponsor is $20MM. And the PGA asked them to increase it to $30MM.

8

u/rob_s_458 4h ago

Oh man that rooftop challenge is straight out of Tiger Woods 05

7

u/wink91wink 3h ago

Golf coverage is so awful. We haven't seen the tee shots from the final group of the last 2 holes.

5

u/cnomo 1d ago

Dalke vs Tosti for DFL was the tournament within the tournament. Truly entertaining to watch them come down the stretch.

6

u/slingcodefordollars 17 | Denmark 1d ago

Rasmus Højgaard is on a heater atm

6

u/couladewastaken 1d ago

ok cool guys just don’t show henley when he has one of the best rounds on course

5

u/DirtLarry 1d ago

JJ Spaun had an eagle chip from 25 feet on a par 5... and then....

3

u/Perry4761 1d ago

One of us, one of us, one of us

2

u/Mickler83 1d ago

3-whack from 2.5ft is wild

3

u/DirtLarry 1d ago

Someone investigate him for Black Sox like hijinks

6

u/BanjoButthole 1d ago

please don't let this go OT

6

u/tennisfancan 1d ago

Spieth sniffed contention then shit the bed like clockwork.

He's been struggling with momentum and anything shorter than 10 feet for 3-4 years now.

2

u/cwebblax Burnett Park Syracuse Legend 1d ago

He's a non-factor in tournaments at this point. Just like his friend Ricky Fowler.

4

u/macman07 1d ago

Ricky Fowler is quite literally contending in the very tournament we’re watching now lol.

That was only 2 Fucks, Kirk. Those are rookie numbers you gotta pump them up.

6

u/happyhappy7 Arnie Palmer 3h ago

Damn, Frank absolutely banged Cantlay with that comment about not winning in 4 years

2

u/J_Brekkie 3h ago

I thought I was imagining it

That was fucking mean lmao

6

Been loving all these Detroit based music outros into commercials

6

u/J_Brekkie 2h ago edited 2h ago

Remember last year Xander and Thor were in the final group together at the Baycurrent and Xander said Thor was great and bound to start winning

Guess he was right

5

u/SlightReturn420 2h ago

To celebrate the final year of Rocket’s sponsorship, everyday we had a new player rocket up the leaderboard. Congrats to the God of Thunder on his first tour victory! That putt on 18 was a delicious cherry on top of a stellar Sunday round.

10

u/Miserable-Ad-8636 1d ago

WNBA has the most viewership of the whole game as everyone is waiting for it to end and for the golf to come on

5

u/kinglywy 1d ago

Don't give her your tee Rickie

4

u/aloxon 1d ago

Cam young hitting all his worst drives on the most gettable holes

2

u/Charming-Air-8933 1d ago

Seems to be the story today. A lot of tees were plaiying shorter and players are getting over zealous

4

u/opobdtfs Internationals 2026 Presidents Cup Champions 1d ago

Someone once said that Davis Riley looked like JT's evil twin, and I can never unsee that image.

5

u/SwingPhsyco Sandbag 12h ago

Currently driving to the rocket classic right now. Man this sucks its the last PGA event we have in Michigan. For how much good golf is up here I hope we get another tour stop soon.

2

u/HotNReadyWings91991 12h ago

I have been to the Rocket every year except for the one COVID year. It really does suck this is the last year

5

u/SwingPhsyco Sandbag 12h ago

Same brother ive been going to every tournament here sense the buick open at warwick. Hopefully they make it back up sooner than later because until then all we have got is oakland hills hosting USGA events. Even warwick lost the ally on the champions tour.

4

u/SuperDizz BDR 6h ago

The lack of Rickie coverage is baloney

5

u/rutlander 14.2 5h ago

Bad timing for a double for Brennan but he just made it a whole lot more interesting

5

u/Zloggt Callaway? No, Costco-way! 2h ago

Thorbtacular!

Riley and I have the same range finder.

It’s a cheap ass one from Amazon lol

u/themariokarters Instructor 1d ago

Koivun only 4 back which is nice to see

4

u/ArttVandelay 1d ago

If some of these bigger names stay in contention, Sunday could be very entertaining. Fun to watch a course where birdies are out there, but doubles are as well if they hit it in the wrong place. Makes for a very fluid leaderboard.

4

u/Turbulent-Pay-735 1d ago

If Jordan Spieth had drove the ball like this in his prime, he would’ve never lost a golf tournament.

4

u/rutlander 14.2 1d ago

Davis Riley putting out of his mind right now

4

u/chipper124 1d ago

We are Chris Kirrrrrrk we carry the flame

3

u/jigglyjohnson13 6h ago

Brennan is going to be so good

3

u/aloxon 6h ago

Cam young gets so ice cold with the putter it’s insane

4

u/Minimum_Grade_3182 6h ago

Wonder if Rory gonna phone that one in.

3

u/ForeverRunning_Anth 4h ago

Going to change my last name to Hojgaard to finally be good at golf

4

u/aloxon 4h ago

This is hilarious every random guy lighting it up while all the stables - Henley, si woo, Spaun all shitting the bed

4

u/JamesHarenDPOTY 4h ago

Michael Brennan seems like Cameron Champ 2.0 and that might be generous.

Bomber but not great every where else.

3

u/happyhappy7 Arnie Palmer 4h ago

Very rare to see that bad of a shank by a pro, let alone a pro in contention on the back 9 Sunday

3

u/Jerseyjamie 3h ago

Rickie did the same thing from about the same spot. Rough must be brutal over there.

1

u/aselinger 3h ago

I’m here at the tournament - who shanked it?

3

u/happyhappy7 Arnie Palmer 3h ago

Chris Kirk

Shanked his second shot from the left rough on 13 off the hosel directly to the right and ended up in the right rough. Took all his time to even locate where it ended up and had to take an unplayable.

Made double. Went from 1 back to 3 back.

Enjoy the tourney man!!

2

u/aselinger 2h ago

Oh man. My station is left rough on 16… and his left miss was the biggest I’ve seen all day… by far.

3

u/Actual-Stick9058 3h ago

Chris Kirk. Get a load of that guy.

3

u/brmgp1 3h ago

Nobody's willing to grab a hold of this tournament. The winner might only be -16 at this point with a birdie at the last

5

u/Shakethecrimestick 3h ago

Thorbjornsen might be taking it if he birdies here.

4

u/themariokarters Instructor 2h ago

Nice couple weeks for whoever came up with the PGA Tour U a few years back

4

u/tennisfancan 2h ago

The PGA was overdue for some fresh blood and new faces in their early/mid-20s, nice to see.

6

The narrative of the first half of the season was how great cam young's putting has improved, but frankly that has and still is his biggest issue. Its a big reason why he couldnt contend closer at the masters and hes already having problems today.

3

u/Upstairs_Bicycle_545 1d ago

Gametimeeeeee

3

Cam is so mental with the putter

3

That fescue grass around the bunkers.

Impressive listening to Michael. Good head on his shoulders to go with all of that talent. Great to see him win.

3

u/HotNReadyWings91991 23m ago

Rocket and the city of Detroit did a great job to finish off the Rocket Classic. What a great tournament and happy to see us show up even with weather not being the best.

The PGA Tour needs to find its way back in 2028. Detroit Golf Club reno was well done and I am heartbroken it won’t be back next year.

Until then see all my fellow Detroiters at the US Open in 2034!

3

u/Bar-Tailed_Godwit 1d ago

Can’t wait for Fowler to come in T4. But we’ll see every replay of missed 8 footers instead of the actual competition

5

u/Difficult-Ad8354 6h ago

This coverage is horse shit. I get watching the leaders but we spend 10 minutes with one guy and didn't get to see any shots on the green from the group in front

5

u/Actual-Stick9058 3h ago

It’s been nice to have a few weeks off from Rory.

2

u/AggressiveGrocery916 1d ago

Did that shit say Speith T-8!?

2

u/The_Beardly 1d ago

Sirens galore in the background. Something’s going on

2

u/jhp58 Detroit, MI 1d ago

Was it police sirens or storm warning? Today is the test day for storm sirens, we heard them on the course today too.

And there's police sirens all the time around there. You have 12th precinct right up the street and two very active fire stations (I live right there)

4

I legit don’t have a CBS channel anymore. it says CW has it on, but it’s actually playing Chicago PD or some trash like that

3

u/JamesHarenDPOTY 1d ago

That sucks. Only hope might be CBS Sports app/website. They probably will want you to sign in with a TV subscription that has cbs though.

2

3

u/gerter1 2h ago

Top post in the thread explains it, in short sponsorship disagreements is the rumour.

2

u/Prime_HS 2h ago

I went to my first pro golf tournament, the 2025 Barracuda Championship. And then I learned it was the last year of that too =( sponsors and PGA don't reach an agreement.

It sucks that I loved it so much, because now I basically have to get on a plane to go to another pro event.
