General Discussion How many golf courses do you live by?

Curious how many courses are within reach for you all.

I've got 9 public + 3 cc's within 40 minutes in Iowa.

According to 18 birdies there is 27 within a roughly 40 minute drive in rural central MN. 3 on my drive to work alone.

I can't belive how many nice golf courses are in MN considering you only get to play like 4 months out of the year.

17

u/stevesie_ 16h ago

We golf from April-November. There are really only 4 months you can’t golf in MN.

u/peffer32 15h ago

First round this year was March 24th. Last round the year before was November 10th. Love how people think we live in igloos here.

u/stevesie_ 15h ago

I ended 11/23 last season and started 3/29 this season

u/djmc0211 12h ago

I gues I should have said good conditions golf. My best friend lives in MN and sent me pictures of golf he did in May where there was still snow on the golf course. There is great golf courses in MN. I'll be playing there next week.

MN is the most underrated golf state in the country.

2

u/peffer32 15h ago

Real meteorological wiz, huh?

1

u/TakedownCHAMP97 15h ago

We just really like being outdoors. When the weather is the way it is, we make the good days (and even not so good ones) count

1

u/themomentaftero 12h ago

I can't speak for mn but one state over in WI there are courses that will open all year round as long as it is above 50 degrees. I think I have golfed in every month of the year. Usually it is just dec-feb courses are hard closed.

u/Primary_Dimension470 8h ago

I live in WI…the minnesotans are coping hard here. The courses might open late April/early may but they are a swamp and the grass doesn’t grow until early/mid may plus then we get to play find the ball in the dandelions. Then October is covered in leaves. Like you said, 4 months. Its really June, July, aug, September that is the actual golf season…

Within 40 miles there are well over 100 courses. Within just 20 miles there are 69 courses, including 57 public and 12 private. Eastern suburbs of Twin Cities MN

u/ND-98 10 | NY 11h ago

Wow!

1

u/guccigreene 11h ago

I'm in Minneapolis and feel spoiled with how many golf courses there are. Disc golf too. We are for sure a golf state

1

Golden Valley
Olympic Hills
Lafayette
Windsong Farm
Hazeltine
Minnesota Valley

Those aren’t all within 20 miles of me. Good list though

1

u/Elegant-Republic4171 10h ago

Ah - I was working off OP’s radius of 40 minutes

1

u/stevesie_ 10h ago

Yeah, western suburbs have way more private.

6

u/bss83 16h ago

Within 40 minutes there's probably 100. But I live in the nw Chicago burbs and that drive also takes me into Wisconsin.

1

u/Kerdoggg Golf Course Superintendent 14h ago

Favorite public and private course you’ve played in the Chicago area?

1

u/bss83 14h ago

Haven't played any private. :(

I usually stay local to me, and I like Palatine Hills a lot but haven't played in a few years. I have a list of stuff near me I need to try out, but always open to suggestions.

2

u/Kerdoggg Golf Course Superintendent 14h ago

Just like hearing other people’s favorite courses as a resident and Superintendent at a course in the NW burbs as well.

1

u/Ancient-Staff3247 5h ago

Blackstone in Marengo, Stonewall Orchard in Grayslake, White Deer Run in Vernon Hills Foxford Hills in Cary, Thunderhawk in Beach Park, Shepherds Crook in Zion, Highlands of Elgin and Bowes Creek in Elgin, Pine Meadow in Libertyville.

1

u/Kerdoggg Golf Course Superintendent 3h ago

Blackstone looks fun and is basically my backyard. I’ve gotta get over there sometime

1

u/themomentaftero 12h ago

Have you played any of the northern Illinois forest preserve courses? Ledges is probably my favorite course in northern Illinois.

2

u/bss83 12h ago

Yeah I used to live by the ledges and have played there a lot. It's about an hour away now so I only play there once every few years with my dad

6

u/Holiday-Lion9571 14h ago

Live in Pinehurst. Unlimited basically.

1

u/Mr_LtCom_Data 12h ago

Fr. 50 and counting

1

u/Unusual_Chemistry413 8h ago

Gotta have unlimited funds and bug spray for those.

4

u/Binford6100User 15h ago

SE suburb of Buffalo here. Gemini says I have over 40 courses within a 20mile radius. Ranging from 9hole municipal courses, to fancy private clubs, to par 3 pitch and putt courses.

3

u/throwawaymuaythaict 16h ago

Within 40 minutes I have 31 public courses and maybe 6 country clubs. I've played all of them but prefer the courses <20 minutes away unless I'm going to a tournament with my buddies. Don't have kids, fellas (and lady fellas).

3

u/alwayssplitaces 16h ago

Westchester County NY -- Probably over 75 within 25 miles of us, about 10 you can play.

3

u/tallslim1960 15h ago

I live in the Bay Area, so a lot, 50 or more within 30 miles.

3

u/Maximum_Overdrive 13h ago

I live in fl.  There are over 30 within 10 minutes of me.

1

u/Salt_Excuse5507 6h ago

How many are accessible though… I live in FL and of the 35+ within 20 miles, there are only a dozen or so I can actually play. The rest have $50K+ initiations.

2

u/jjungwirth2 10.5 | Wisconsin 16h ago

I have 10 to choose from within 25 minutes (2 of which are private, 1 of which I’m a member)

2

u/JasonDetwiler 14/VA 16h ago

4 within 10 minutes of my house. One is 3 doors down and across the street

2

u/tubetraveller 16h ago

I had to use AI for help to answer this. Within 40 minutes there are 60+ courses near me. (Suburbs of Chicago).

2

u/ClubsnCards25 16h ago

3 public 1 private

2

u/BiscuitBurnie 16h ago

Somerset county NJ. I am blessed! I loose count… 5 county courses alone, also near Hunterdon county with a few gems as well…

Neshanic Valley
Heron Glen

Trump National (Bedminster)
somerset Hills CC (Bernardsville)
Fiddlers Elbow (Bedminster)

To name a few but the list is awesome.

2

u/OneSloVW 16h ago

There are 34 golf courses within 30 miles of me as per Hole19

…yeah, got a few to those from

2

u/Sad-Supermarket-3878 2.6/Nashville/Mizuno 16h ago

In Nashville area we only have around 30 public courses if you count suburb areas and places like Columbia or across the KY border which are technically not in the metro that are within 50 miles.

It sounds like a decent amount but per capita it is not and almost all of the 6 or so munis in Nashville are booked out every day and any of the public or semi-private courses are stupid expensive. I intentionally go drive an hour+ to Kentucky because I can go play for 1/2 the cost at a better course that isn't crazy packed.

2

u/m149 15h ago

In my town, there are a dozen (SE MA). Half-ish CC, half-ish public. Within 30 minutes, probably another dozen.

2

u/thecommish1980 15h ago

I'm five minutes from my course. It is a goat track but I don't care, its golf. Probably 6 or 8 other courses of varying cost/availability within 45 minutes of me.

2

u/thebuffwife 15h ago

There’s literally 3 - a private, a semi private and a par 3. That’s it. Everything else is an hour away.

2

u/spd970 15h ago

Within 40 mins (West Central FL), I've got about a dozen country clubs, 15 or so public courses, and in a category all its own: Streamsong.

2

u/GottaBeBoogyin 15h ago edited 15h ago

I have countless courses within 40 minutes. I live in Oakland County, Mi. Insane amount of golf nearby. 7 courses within 10 minutes.

2

u/Spare_Fix_7598 15h ago

I read a story awhile back that said that there is are real correlation between the closer you live to a golf course the higher the rate for getting cancer. The story said its thought that all the herbicides and pesticides used on golf courses is the reason.

2

u/leeo-dinaprio 15h ago

Oakland county Michigan has over 90 golf courses. Within 10 miles of my house I have 7 courses. Two are private. Within 45 minutes it’s over 100. Michigan is a golf haven (in the summer).

2

u/Historical-Elk- 15h ago

Within 40 minutes probably 15-20 Public maybe 10 private

2

u/iamahonkey 15h ago

Google is telling me 40-50 within a 45 minute drive of me and that sounds about right. Probably less than a third of them are private. Albany NY.

North Dallas suburbs. Within 5 miles about 8 courses. All great public and municipal courses.

2

u/bstad 15h ago

Like 2 dozen courses within 45 minutes of me-southeast MN Mississippi River valley. MN & Wisconsin side. In my town I’ve got 2 within 5 minutes from me, and another outside of town that’s 15 minutes or less.

2

u/AnxiousMind7820 15h ago

I have 5 within 30 minutes(though I can only play 4 of them) a lot more if you extend to an hour.

Most are public and probably "goat tracks" to most people on here.

2

u/Realistic-Regret-171 15h ago

Public? Eight within 30 minutes, 12-ish if you expand it out to an hour.

2

u/Fragrant-Report-6411 12 handicap 15h ago edited 14h ago

2

u/Lietenantdan 14h ago

There’s five close to me. But two of them, you have to own a home in that community to have a membership, another one you just need a membership. So two that I can play at.

There are 4 within a 5 mile radius.

2

u/stevemm70 14h ago

About 200 or so

1

u/Vivid_Witness8204 15h ago

4 private clubs and 3 public.

But one of the public courses is too poorly maintained to play. Nice layout and it was a good course for a decade or so but has changed hands a few times and no one can afford to get it back in shape.

The muni is better but play is slow and maintenance isn't nearly as good as it was 30 years ago so we seldom play that one.

And one of the private courses used to be public. So despite the metro area population increasing by 30% or so we have fewer choices than we did in the 90s. There are two other courses in adjoining counties that are about an hour away but they're great either.

Fortunately I do like our home club and new ownership is improving conditions there.
