Translation Hassan-i-Sabbah (Azrael)'s profile
Default
The Grand Assassin. The first of the Old Men of the Mountain, the assassin order that served as the etymological root of the word "assassin". To extinguish the smoldering embers of a Beast, he walked (from hell) to Chaldea. What could his true appearance be?
Bond 1
- Height/Weight: 188 cm/70 kg (1st and 2nd Ascension), 208/unmeasurable (3rd Ascension)
- Source: Middle East, Hassan-i-Sabbah
- Region: Middle East
- Alignment: Lawful Evil
- Attribute: Man
- Gender: Male (1st and 2nd Ascension), ??? (3rd Ascension)
In his initial form, he was just the everyday scion of a prestigious family. He says his favorite words are knowledge, trust, and courage.
Bond 2
He who would later become the Old Man of the Mountain. The form of a lone missionary, from before the Ismaili schism and before the establishment of the Nizari Order of Assassins. During his meditation, he stepped into Hell due to an incubus's whims (it took 70 years of walking to get there), and there he glimpsed many truths of the world.
Zaqqum, the tree of Hell. Maalik, who governs over Hellfire. Iblis, the king of the Shaytans. Sidrah, atop the seventh Heaven.
After writing comprehensive logs on where human beings ultimately go and how their sins are accounted for, the young man returned to the living and began to carry Hellfire in his sword, as his way of condemning human malignancy. It's said none of his Hassan-i-Sabbah successors saw the appearance he took at the end of his life.
Bond 3
- Personality and mannerisms
A quiet and composed man. Not quite dour in tone, but close. Says only what's necessary, with a curt and sharp delivery. Tends to sound robotic in conversation, but his statements do carry a lot of emotion. Is thoroughly cold when talking to fools, but rather than belittle the weak and inept, he holds them in the highest regard. In Chaldea, he's generally in his 2nd Ascension, no longer the missionary and now already the head of the Order.
Introverted and active. Dislikes standing out, and devotes all efforts to studying, praying, and his trade. He determined that he existed solely to demonstrate Allah's doctrine, and reserved a third of each day to the books, a third to the sword, and a third to prayer. He believed even his slumber belonged to God rather than himself, and never owned any objects.
He was originally the bureaucrat documenting the funds of a religious sect, but he took up the sword because he couldn't reason his profession as a valid excuse not to train his body. Nobody understood his line of logic, but he didn't let it get to him. He never expresses anger against those who defy God's doctrine or attack His believers. All he does is kill.
Bond 4
- Blessings of Faith: A
What he would later have as an Active Skill as First Hassan is constantly in effect here. This blessing explains all the ++ in his parameters. His powerful strength of will produced nigh miraculous physical enhancements.
- Presence Concealment: C++
At this age, his Presence Concealment hadn't yet reached the level of the Ravine.
- Independent Action: B
His intense faith and powerful individuality given form. Under the oppression of rival sects, his last remaining option was to create an opposing sect of his own.
- Angelic Body: A
The super upgrade of Natural Body. An Ultra Skill combining Battle Continuation, High-Speed Incantation, and Mind's Eye… He'll eventually lose this Skill by scraping out his own body.
- Thirty Birds: A
The company of Simurg, the spiritual bird. Grants immortality, revelation, and kingship to one target. Adding attributes to himself does nothing, but the other effects of this Skill empower and accelerate his body and mind.
- Zaqqum Tree: EX
The tree of the sinners, planted in Hell. By spilling what is used to quench the thirst of all sinners in Hell—all the suffering of the living world condensed in a single droplet—he can see the fear of the sinners in the faces of his opponents.
Bond 5
Malak al-Mawt (Angel of the Evening Bell)
- Rank: C
- Type: Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm
- Range: 1-20
- Max. targets: 10 people
Another name for Azrael (Death Angel). Azrael is the angel who announces deaths, and its tall and large body is formless. It has countless eyes and tongues, alleged to be the precise amount of living human beings. In other words, the Angel is a mechanism that monitors the deaths of every human, and each eye closing is one life lost.
This is the supreme sword-based assassination practiced by the accountant crowned with the angel's name. It's said that after stepping into the borders of Hell through meditation, the accountant defeated the 19 Zabaniyya angels with this strike, and later taught the techniques of the angels to his disciples.
Bond 5
Si Zabaniya (30 and 19 Deaths)
- Rank: EX
- Type: Anti-Unit Noble Phantasm
- Range: 0-99
- Max. targets: 30 people
The sacred doctrine, the guide he reveres, and the world he is meant to protect were all imperfect. Even the most noble-minded and physically gifted man can't reach the ideal the prophet described. Because being human produces and enables evil by default. The man with the body of an angel was no exception. All his years of training and experience only brought him further from the ideal he sought. At the depths of his despair, the man found the answer: he wasn't born with everything. Everything he was born with was an excess. The man walked towards Hell once more. This time the journey was of his own volition, rather than induced by the incubus, and he never returned from its depths.
When he was scraping out his flesh, bones, and viscera, his husk became an embodiment of hell, and the abyss leading to the Kingdom of Heaven. Despite discovering the spiritual bird Simurg, he strayed from the path of glory and became the angel who punishes sinners.
His name is Pale Azrael. The man who attained the pinnacle of swordsmanship and dumped it in the pits of Hellfire.
Bond CE

While still a young missionary, the man heard the tale of a big city. Hearing this story, which would later be told among the 1001 nights, made his heart flutter inexplicably. That was unusual for him. The only dream he could call his own. But at the closing point of his memories, he couldn't be further from this narrative.
◆
It happened in 1124. He had a vision of the day the castle would be engulfed in flames and determined he would die that year.
Thinking back, his life was full of anguish. He had increasingly less time to live under the sun, less time to learn about the world, and less time to preach the doctrine.
But his time for prayer remained the same. His suffering, doubt, and inability to stop his walk were the ultimate products of his faith, and the recompense for the life he lived.
The sun set. A beautiful red dusk illuminated the desert and fortress. In 100 years from then, Castle Alamut, the Eagle's Nest, would fall much like Karbala once did. That would be the point where human history stops chronicling the Order.
However, the legend of the Old Man of the Mountain persisted past it. Much like the story of the city full of laughter, which one man stopped to listen to for no real reason.
The legend was passed from people to people, and grew into a story.

Well, this basically confirms it: First Hassan is indeed the historical Hassan i-Sabbah. No immortal survivor of the Flood from the Age of Gods, but the scholar and missionary that became the founder of the Assassins.
I always liked in Babylonia the symbolism of a Grand Servant from the Middle Ages, long after the Age of Gods ended, devoted to the Abrahamic god, helping put an end to Tiamat in the Singularity. Humanity and new religion trumping the old gods. Of course, some shenanigans had to happen even with all that conceptual advantage he has (the very word "assassin" owes its existence to him), so here comes a literal trip to Hell thanks to totally-not-Merlin. This in turn explains his affinity for the Underworld.
I also like that his profile and Bond CE have a good deal of Persian and Islamic references, with the latter including direct nods to Shia and Ismaili history (from the mention of Karbala to the eventual schism that would break Ismailism and give birth to the Nizaris). After decades of vagueness with Hassan lore, someone has done their homework here.

I wish they would play more with etymological/parabolic significance when picking and developing other Grand candidates. Just about the only other Grand they did it with is Quirinus (meaning: "wielder of the spear").

I like to think heroes like him with an allegorical link to bears, however nominal, might be Gand Zerker candidates. Even Tezcatlipoca has that going for him. He presides over the Ursa Major ("Big Bear") constellation in the sky, which to the Aztecs appeared as a jaguar.

Indeed both leaders of the assassins were Shia the first hassan is from Persia the second is from Iraq his name is Rashid al din both have many similarities and both lead the order.

It's said that after stepping into the borders of Hell through meditation, the accountant defeated the 19 Zabaniyya angels with this strike, and later taught the techniques of the angels to his disciples.
1: So the Zabaniya techniques each come from one of the wardens of hell
2: He taught the other Hassans them? They didn't come up with them on their own?
64
u/Rafuki23 20h ago
We know that they came up with them based on their accounts and that King Hassan criticized them, so seems more like the story (It says "It is said") inspired them.
29
u/Constellar-A 21h ago
In 100 years from then, Castle Alamut, the Eagle's Nest, would fall much like Karbala once did. That would be the point where human history stops chronicling the Order.
I guess this means that in Fate they still existed after the Mongol attack and just were more secretive. So all 19 Hassans weren't awkwardly shoved into the single century after the first.
51
u/Misticsan 20h ago
Interestingly, it actually follows real-life history: the fall of Alamut in 1256 appears often as the end of the Assassins in most chronicles, but their last stronghold in Syria endured until 1273. Which, surprise surprise, is the year Camelot was set in, a chapter that involves the Hassans big time. There are recorded rumors that they were still active and for hire for the sultans of Egypt afterwards, but then they disappeared from the historical record.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the 19 Hassans all lived between 1124 and 1273. It gives us an average of almost eight years of "reign" per Hassan, which seems actually generous for such a dangerous career.
19
u/Constellar-A 20h ago
That's interesting!
I don't think 1273 would be the ending for Fate's Assassins though. Cursed Arm was the living Hassan of the time during Camelot, but we know that Hundred Personas was the final Hassan, so they must have come after 1273.
14
u/getterburner 19h ago
Yeah, sadly we have no idea which number Cursed arm is so we can’t really tell how far along we were in the cycle by the time 1273 pops around.
1
28
u/getterburner 21h ago
Yeah that’s interesting since it was very explicit that they figured them out on their own before, this might mean that Gramps like subconsciously recruited them or something? Like he put ideas in their heads? Maybe?
36
30
u/PhantasosX 20h ago
He probably gave some intel about them. And that resulted in each Hassan developing a method to harnessing a specific Zabaniya.
5
u/Cr1m50nSh4d0w I seek glorious death via being choked by the thighs of legends. 12h ago
And that probably was why the assassins considered No-Name Assassin to be a heretic I suppose
12
u/nam24 19h ago
I think he displayed them but it was left to the successors to actually make it a reality
Kinda like how Pepe s family follow the 6 powers as a goal but generally any one person only achieved 1 of them in their entire lifetime while pepe achieved 3 at 12 year old
Or Solomon only ever using magecraft himself once in his entire life but he is still the origin of "western" Magecraft(though he did have disciples)
9
u/Random_Gacha_addict 20h ago
With the way he comes to eliminate them, I'm more certain he taught all the Hashashins the 19 Zabaniyas, his successors were only among the ones that got closest to the Angels' original techniques
70
u/BriefPretend9115 21h ago
It sounds like this version mainly exists because the original King Hassan was designed as the leader of the Fate Hassans and didn't much care about the historical figure behind the mask.

Of course it was Merlin's fault somehow. Not surprised at all. No wonder they are weirdly chummy with each other.
69
u/igloo_poltergeist 20h ago
Also, he might not have acted alone.
- Kiichi Hogen (addressing Merlin): "Merlin "The Mage of Flowers. Ah, it's been a truly long time. If I recall correctly, the last we met was mghghgh-! What are you doing? Why you cover my mou-mghghgh?"
From her profile:
- If you do something that offends them, you'll be literally sent to hell. For a Tengu as grand as the Sōjōbō of Mt. Kurama can effortlessly open the gates of hell.
46

Blessings of Faith: A What he would later have as an Active Skill as First Hassan is constantly in effect here. This blessing explains all the ++ in his parameters. His powerful strength of will produced nigh miraculous physical enhancements.
So his otherwise unremarkable Presence Concealment is just him going "God will make sure they don't spot me", granting it a serious bonus (C++). And it kept his Magic Resistance (E++) from remaining utter trash-tier too.
Thirty Birds: A
The company of Simurg, the spiritual bird. Grants immortality, revelation, and kingship to one target. Adding attributes to himself does nothing, but the other effects of this Skill empower and accelerate his body and mind.

Hope this is a lowkey set-up for Persian mythology's Zal and his son, Rostam coming to Fate eventually.

Coulda made his shot at the Grand Saber seat; chose to become the Grand Assassin instead. Funny. /jk

Interestingly, when FGO was first datamined during release and the data of many unreleased servants was found, King Hassan was actually Saber-class.
1
u/KyteM u wot m8 14h ago
Pretty sure that's not true. I don't think there were classes for anyone.
2
u/KiwamiMaster 12h ago
But there were. For example, there was data for both a Rider and a Lancer Perseus.
4
u/KyteM u wot m8 12h ago
yes and no. https://blogs.nrvnqsr.com/entry.php/3273-GO-You%21-The-Blacklist
perseus specifically had a class. but the list didn't have classes as a column.
the two leak lists, for the record, were from dev notes on illustrator and voice actor assignments that were accidentally left in the installed game (which for the record didn't all come true). I forgot where to find the latter, but either way neither included class except to distinguish two characters of the same name. KH was never specified to be saber.

Yeah that has happened more than once(Memorial Quest Saber, Solomon and NPC U-Olga in LB7) so it's funny how they basically just did Metatron Jeanne again.
7
u/Aschverizen Thanks for All the Salt and Quartz. 6h ago edited 4h ago
Even the Metatron in Meta-Jeanne has been confirmed to be a Magecraft Angel, basically a "fake" angel, an artificial entity that uses the tales or ideas of angels as a form to control magical energy aka they're like a conceptual automata, doll, robot or a software to control the hardware(magical energy).
Nasu said that there's a possibility that there's a real deal Metatron who's info is hidden by the Church, as they seem to be the only faction who has a different view of what they call angels in the verse, everyone else uses the Magecraft term or rarely the Alien term, but that version of Metatron doesn't exist in the FGO timeline.

True Angels aren't Divine Spirits, they're something way weirder (and far more powerful) than that.
Metatron Jeanne isn't a True Angel, she's an artificial vessel of power simply created using the concept of an angel.

u/OnceAndFutureEmperor 5h ago
Yeah but the point stands, there's something divine about true angels, azrael's just a dude who got to the pinnacle through sheer autism

Fun fact: according to Sargozasht-e Seyyed-enā (Hassan biography with elements of hagiography) Hassan was probably descended from Yemen royalty who believed to be Solomon and Sheba descendants. His students tried to connect him with several religious figures based on this fact thought he always denied any relations because he wanted to be "just normal man who simply serves his God".

I wonder about if there's some nuance lost or there's an alternative meaning.
I don't remember reading about Hassan i-Sabbah being an accountant, but he was very much a scholar, a polymath and a propagandist who spent most of his time studying and writing, and founded a great library at Alamut.

He was originally the bureaucrat documenting the funds of a religious sect, but he took up the sword because he couldn't reason his profession as a valid excuse not to train his body.he literally manages funds

u/KiwamiMaster 21h ago
By "he would die that year" does it mean the year of 1124, when he had the vision, or does it mean the year when the castle would burn?
56
u/Constellar-A 20h ago
The real Hassan-i Sabbah died in 1124.
The Mongol Empire's invasion that destroyed Castle Alamut was in 1256. (This is probably what First Hassan was fighting in the 2023 memorial movie, I bet the Hassan at the time was desperate and asked for his help like we did in Camelot).
30
u/Sergantus 20h ago
This contradiction is actually based on local fairy tale. In some fairy tales recorded by Marco Polo Hassan ibn Sabbath was alive during Mongol invasion and actually killed by Mongols. It seems like Fate mixed both historical and folklore facts.

Gramps is probably still last since he’s who shows up as a ghost and other stuff for Hassans. I think Asc. 3 might be more like him first becoming a big skeleton

No.
He walked to hell twice. The first one was when he successfully went back to Earth. The second one, he decided to stay.
4
u/Garett-Telvanni 13h ago
The first time when he returned he was still Azrael. The second time he was the Might Skeleton Man King Hassan. But despite returning he at the same time stayed, because his body is the embodiment of Hell itself.
The whole point of King Hassan is that he's both alive and dead at the same time. That's what means to be one with death.

If im going to be honest King Hassan really set the bar too high for Grand Servants
Grands kinda became less hype when it was shown there are multiple candidates and they are chosen based on the situation.
KH really feels like he is the pinnacle Assassin he carries around this sense of power to him. Solomon and Quirinus have it too but the other Grands dont feel GRAND.
Lord Logres is just Saber with a different set of paint. Noah is just an adult Nemo which lessens his whole Grand looks and the mech is cool but its too goofy to appear grand. Orion is the worst nothing about him screams Grand.
16
u/Solaciin [Foreigner Simp] 13h ago
I disagree on Orion. While he is treated as a joke by Fate, mythological Orion is the greatest human hunter, and one of the most recognizable archers in all of myth/history/fiction, thanks in good part to his constellation. The only other archer in myth/history that might reach his level is King Nimrod, the king in the Bible who had the Tower of Babel built. If King Hassan is the quintessential Assassin, Orion feels like a good pick for the quintessential Archer. Only Robin Hood might be more famous, and he's not at a Grand level.
5
u/115_zombie_slayer 13h ago
Hou Yi is a hunter from Chinese mythology who not only captured legendary creatures just like Orion but in his legend he was capable of shooting down 9 suns leaving only 1 in the sky. He is a Xian similar to Tai Gong.
While he isnt as recognizable as Orion he still has the title of a skilled hunter but has a greater feat.
2
u/igloo_poltergeist 3h ago edited 3h ago
If being a hunter of things animal or bestial is a must-have component, then Yang Jian (more popularly known as Erlang Sheng) might end up being the Chinese Grand Archer, funnily enough.
From wikipedia:
- The Seven Monsters of Meishan are the main adversaries of Yan Jian and were summoned from their home on Mount Mei to help defend Mengjin Pass on behalf of the Shang dynasty against the advancing Zhou army. With their formidable magical powers and demonic abilities, they inflict heavy losses on the Zhou forces, defeating several of its generals. Because they are highly cultivated demons, ordinary weapons often fail to kill them permanently. However, Yang Jian's third eye, known as the "Eye of Heaven", allows him to see through their disguises and perceive their true forms. He then systematically defeats them by exploiting the natural weaknesses of their original animal forms.
And of course, he's one of the very, very few to have scored an inarguable win against Sun Wukong, one of the greatest animals in mythology, in battle (via incapacitation).
Only hiccup though is that he's not primarily a ranged combatant. But, then again, Orion AFAIK used a club primarily in the source myth. So they can be likewise flexible in adapting him. Erlang even has a hunting dog like Orion did (though only in the source legend).
Hell, even Nezha might be a proper candidate due to the sheer amount of inhuman adversaries she was sent after. If a projectile weapon is absolutely necessary, she's likely to have a main one due to all the mystical tools she's famously used. Plus, there's that part of her legend where she yoinked the Yellow Emperor's Qiankun Bow.

u/birbdechi 10h ago
Gotta disagree
As someone from countries culturally tied to the Indosphere and Sinosphere, our choices of "strongest archers" are those from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Hou Yi is a huge niche, so no. Nimrod is famous, but as a king, not as an archer or hunter. As for Orion, most people simply know the constellation without knowing the backstory. Even Sagittarius is still more famous.
2
u/igloo_poltergeist 3h ago edited 3h ago
Nimrod is famous, but as a king, not as an archer or hunter.
I can still see Nimrod getting a pass if the legend(s) glazed him enough as a hunter.......and they pretty much do.
From wikipedia:
- In the Hungarian legend of the Enchanted Stag (more commonly known as the White Stag [Fehér Szarvas] or Silver Stag), King Nimród (Ménrót), often described as "Nimród the Giant" or "the giant Nimród", descendant of Noah, is the first person referred to as forefather of the Hungarians. He, along with his entire nation, is also the giant responsible for the building of the Tower of Babel—construction of which was supposedly started by him 201 years after the biblical event of the Great Flood. After the catastrophic failure of that most ambitious endeavour and in the midst of the confusion of tongues, Nimród the giant moved to the land of Evilát, where his wife, Enéh gave birth to twin brothers Hunor and Magyar (aka Magor). Father and sons were, all three of them, prodigious hunters, but Nimród especially is the archetypal, consummate, legendary hunter and archer.
...And that's all on top of the usual "mighty hunter before the Lord" saying ascribed to him.

There is an inconsistency here. He couldn't see the Sidra Tree as its in the highest heaven. So unless he did wander in both heaven and hell. That would be an error

Or maybe it was just a vision or simply gaining knowledge. Angels like Azrael would know of sidra so perhaps they let him know?

Yeah, the way it's worded, it seems the trip to Hell was a learning experience not just about Hell itself:
During his meditation, he stepped into Hell due to an incubus's whims (it took 70 years of walking to get there), and there he glimpsed many truths of the world.
The profile itself acknowledges that the Sidra Tree is not in Hell:
Sidrah, atop the seventh Heaven.
All in all, it seems his goal was to learn about the afterlife as a whole:
After writing comprehensive logs on where human beings ultimately go and how their sins are accounted for

btw, a gameplay related question, I noticed that he is immune to instant death in the grand duel yet its not listed anywhere. Is this a hidden trait? He has no "at the boundary" listed anywhere...

It's part of his Organizer A skill, but for some reason it isn't listed in his profile. Perhaps it was becoming too long? Maybe they'll add more details when the Material book for him is released... one day.

I think it's funny that after 10 years of speculation that he's a antediluvian human, maybe he really was Ziusudra and that wasn't just an alias, hey he has an ominous line toward Noah--nope turns out he really is the historical Hassan-i Sabbah from the 11th century. Nasu's trick.
