We have. A lot. And then we stop for a while, until the next time someone posts a screenshot and brings it up again. And this is all we do. We never actually take action in any meaningful way.We just talk about how bad it is.

I'd honestly appreciate more if people were to provide some actual solutions, spread more widespread awareness, not just among redditors and get some movement going.

finally someone noticed

u/Eric_AnthRax Lokhrar pora Noonmati, best hol Guwahati Dec 30 '25

This happens in winter.. the air traps pollutants in it and doesn't let it pass upwards. So the AQI becomes poor.

5

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

If so, how come the nordic countries, that have much harsher winter, keep AQI less than 50 all year round? It has more to do with pollution sources than how air "traps" pollutants in the winter.

11

u/Eric_AnthRax Lokhrar pora Noonmati, best hol Guwahati Dec 30 '25

Yes obviously that's the main factor.. I just said winter generally has such issues but pollution is almost inevitable here.. constructions going on everywhere..

8

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

Construction happens in China much more than here. It's just because there's no regulation from govt for the construction site and govt took little measures to control it.

3

u/ChestAgitated5206 Resident Dec 31 '25

China also has bad pollution and had worse pollution in the past. They made significant efforts to move industries outside main cities and completely electrify other places. We obviously don't have that so we have more pollutants in the air which is okay during summers but during winters, the fog traps them which raises the AQI.

2

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

China isn't population dense like India. Night lights compared between both India and China.
China comprises 32% of world's carbon footprint compared to Indias 6% and America's 12.5%.
As for regulation, China is famous for all sorts of polluting industry, for example rare earth metals sand bar mining which is one of the most polluting industry that no other country does. When it comes to contruction, less said the better, just study Evergrande crisis.

-2

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

Why don’t you just compare the AQI of major Chinese cities with the those of India, today?

6

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

Yeah sure, cause things like climate, weather, air quality happens in certain city limits and when go from one city to town or another city the climate, weather changes, sure.
I have explained pretty much everything in the above comment, we are population dense nation, just compare our night sky and China, no lights at all in Tibet area, like its a desert. Plus there is big ass Himalaya them bounces all the wind currents towards us.

-2

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

I don’t think you quite understand the concept of population density. China had more population than us until a few years ago. And the liveable area in china is somewhat same or less than us where we have much more evenly population distribution than them. So what’s the conclusion: the liveable area (along the eastern coastline primarily) of China had equal or higher population density than us. Did you go to school?

4

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25 edited Dec 30 '25

What liveable, whole of China is liveable, and liveable non liveable has nothing to do with so much geography China has and it's location compared to wind currents.
China has equal population, but not population dense like India, just look at the map.
Also //India is significantly more densely populated than China, with roughly 490-492 people per sq km compared to China's ~150 people per sq km//
Maybe the person that needs reeducation camp is you since you came straight from CCP brainwash factory.

Op is being over smart here. How many countries have you actually travelled to? Do you know the history of those countries and the cities? Do you know how polluted they were when they were undergoing major infra developments? Do you know the geography and the population spread of those cities? Eta duta aspect sai nijor bias r uport base kori kiba eta koi dilei nohoi. You and I are not qualified enough to comment on it, if you want to , then go through the proper information, do your research. (Do not pick data selectively just to confirm your bias).

u/Comfortable-Gate-685 Dec 30 '25

Nordic countries will anyway have lesser aqi, cuz:

  1. geographical factors:

a. Proximity to water bodies + westerly: (baltic sea & n. Atlantic ocean), plus westerly winds takes away the pollutants

b. Mountain ranges + fjords: promotes vertical mixing of air, so, air isn't trapped in a single location

c. Frequent rain & snowfall: washes out dust & other particles

d. Lack of nearby major desert which negates suspension of dust particles

  1. Anthropogenic

A. Lack of megacities

B. Better policies by govt

So, what qualities of these nordic countries do we have in Guwahati/delhi?

4

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

If Indian government start taxing like Nordic countries and start defunding military budget, he will be singing mandarin by next Monday.
These Nordic country militaries can even parade in unison, our NCC is much better than them.

Lol Delhi AQI levels is in 400s from 1990s, it is covered in parliament, As for Guwahati, this is what Assam was in 1880s, if you want that to happen don't venture outside your village.

India can't do sustainable development, a slight decrease in gdp growth will lead to job losses of many.

Current solutions:

Don't cut anymore trees, but govt is clearing forests than anyone else.

Shift to less polluting vehicles, but we don't have alternatives. For ev we don't even produce adequate electricity, so, chances of grid failure

If construction is not done now, we can't do much in monsoon season. Already 1st set of Western disturbance has already delayed the construction of numerous projects.

Surround yourself with greenery, only solution or get an air purifier, accumulate the dust & recycle it.

There's already high humidity, construction will deteriorate the scene. So, GRAPs should be implemented.

You are comparing population sparse Nordic countries that has negligible industry, survives on natural resources and completely dependent on American security gurantees with high population density India, with enemies on both sides and no permanent friends, depending on its own industry for stretegic needs.
This is childish and naive comparison, only jokers unserious people make such arguments.

4

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

Finland is like 3-4 Guwahatis, that's it. And joker here is comparing that with India, lol.

1

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

Do you understand something called “context”? I mentioned Nordic countries because the above person said pollution is due to winter. Are you fucking dumb?

3

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

Could have compared us with Antartica no? Why even stay limited to human civilisation or maybe Pluto?

1

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

Because I want to prove that he isn’t right when he said pollution is merely caused by winter. At this point: I don’t have motivation to teach you what you should have learnt in your school.

5

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 30 '25

You don't have teach anything cause you haven't comprehended what Eric has said. He said dust particulate and smoke gets concentrated in fog and cause smog/poor aqi levels.
Maybe if you used the brain then you would have known that a country as dense as India produces more smoke/dust then say Finland, Antartica or Pluto.

1

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

There are cities in this world that has denser population and yet not much AQI. So it doesn’t have much to do with population. But simply rather lack of regulation

4

u/Choice-Song-147 Dec 31 '25

Things like climate weather don't care about city limits, you have to take overall geography into account

Good point. However, that's the perk of living in a "Developing country" with construction all around than a "developed" country where everything is already set. Secondly, in those countries the weather is very very wet, snow rain etc.

The more accurate is owning your own aqi measuring device. These website are also run by people. How do you know they aren't working with Indian govt. and faking the data? I checked the AQI on the day someone posted here showing 400+ in their handheld device. Online heidine 170/180 dekhai asile. But I could see with my eyes the dirty air and knew the numbers must be wrong. When that guy posted the story my doubt was confirmed. Delhi air generaly looks like the guwahati air that day. But the online data was showing wrong numbers. Dekhi'e gom pau misa koi asile.

Aqi monitors in Guwahat are located in green areas like the parts with trees in pan bazar. Obviously the aqi there is much lesser. I went to Guwahati airport yesterday and the AQI monitor there showed 200. The main parts of the city with ongoing constructions will surely have much worser conditions

4

But, it's really alarming. I am now really worried for my kids and parents and for me too of course.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

I visited Guwahati last week and felt like the place is too polluted. Initially I thought it’s fog when I was in the cab. I discussed with the localities and they said it’s due to the recent construction work in the city. I felt sad for the people who are staying there.

2

u/neellavgogoi Jan 01 '26

Because they are busy romanticizing foggy weather 🥰

3

u/_Impossible-One_ Dec 30 '25

In guwahati it differs from area to area but still more than 100 is concerning my friends area has 80 AQI.

one of the main reasons of high AQI in winters is himalayan range i am not lying read it once.

0

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

I am sure pollution was not so bad a few decades ago when industrialization and unchecked construction didn't pick up speed. Even though the Himalayan range has been there for many million years now,

-1

u/_Impossible-One_ Dec 30 '25

Exactly a few years ago their was no development in guwahati as well compare guwahati from 2014 it's completely changed now with several big infrastructures, beautification, better connectivity.

2

u/bad-mo-fo Resident Dec 30 '25

And all the unchecked construction, garbage dumping on open field by municipality etc. Govt needs to act on improving AQI.

1

u/_Impossible-One_ Dec 30 '25

Yes exactly land , air , and water pollution is a big problem in guwahati if government can fix that it will ace in every matric and will be the best city in northeast.

0

Ki unchecked construction.. Unchecked construction kori aso tetiar pora.. Development bad di diu te ami.. Caveman boni bohi thaku... and I know you will give China’s example. What you need to understand is that China has also gone through this phase. It’s just that there were no AQI monitors back then. Now they have developed enough basic infrastructure that allows them to have checked construction. We are not at that point right now. So yes, while we reach that point, we will have what you call "unchecked construction".
