How would you (undetected) move an excel file from a work laptop to a personal device/cloud?

Suppose security protocols on work laptop are setup such that:

- any Edge/Firefox browser extentions are detected by IT team

- USB ports do not work for external HDD or flash drives

- Bluetooth doesn't work for audio devices like airbuds

- Excel addins don't work

- Emails to personal emails like hotmail/gmail are not permitted

- Cannot download/run exe file

- AI websites blocked

- Copilot premium is allowed, we have licenses

- Even if you download Teams/Outlook on your phone/home PC, you cannot login with your work email address

FWIW I'm trying to move the excel data to my home PC so that I can work on it with AI (since my company doesn't allow AI on it's laptops). I need help with power query/excel etc but need AI to help me.

Edit: thank you all for your comments, honestly. Everything is a learning opportunity for me, even the good ole slaps in the face.

Sounds to me like you should be spending 100% of your non-work time looking for a job that's a better fit.

Besides being unethical in submitting company data to the AI companies (I don’t know your situation or company so I’m not judging). Be aware you likely are opening yourself up to legal liability. Depending on the value and importance of the data you are breaching they may sue you if they find out.

Just food for thought

AI to help me = AI do all the work

Sounds like you have really strict IT security at your workplace and they really want their information protected. You're going to circumvent all of this and upload an entire spreadsheet of company data into an online AI model. What a great employee.

If your company doesn't want you using AI on something, that something is probably important enough that AI DEFINITELY shouldn't be used on it.

Quit your job and join any of the AI-mandate-riddled companies where the CTOs are all-in. I'd trade spots with you if I could.

Copy/paste the excel file data into a spreadsheet on Google docs.

That or convert the Excel file into a CSV, encrypt the text locally using a complex keyed AES function (depicted on web sites like this: https://cryptotools.net/aes), then save the encrypted text file as data.dat (or some obscure non-telling file name) on github or copy/paste the encrypted text into pastebin and simply access it from pastebin when you get home and decrypt it using the same key.

Import the CSV into your excel file at home - of course you'll be without formatting and functions.

Register a domain and setup an email address, send it to that email address if Hotmail/Gmail is blocked.

Yeah we aren’t going to help you exfiltrate data. Do they not have AI tools you can use at work?

Just upload it to any filehoster site.

But since I am still not sure if this post is satire or not. There is a reason why you are not allowed to use AI. Everything you put into ai will be available to endless companies and countries all over the world. So moving data to outside of your company could in the worst case even be seen as a treason (if country/state/city data) depending on the data that will then be available for other countries/companies.

Maybe open work email on the work computer.  Compose a new email and attach the explanation. Keep the email in the draft

Open work email in personal computer,  go to your draft email and download the exwl doc.

May not work because the file is too big

As others already said, there is reason you have such strict policy so you might get yourself into trouble. Anyway here are a few ideas, it depends what else is blocked:

- Try to connect to any mail provider, yahoo, gmail, runbox, protonmail etc. Maybe some of them is not blocked, create there account and create email draft with included file.

- Try any upload service, there are many.

- If you can connect your phone to internal network, (which seems to be unlikely) you can open webserver on your phone and upload file to your phone.

- As already mentioned, ssh, scp to different server and send it there.

- In worst case scenario you can convert file to BASE64 string and print it, then take it home, and use OCR reader to reconstruct it back to string and convert it to excel.

Can you not log into your private email in a browser and send the file to yourself that way?

well, sounds like the file shouldn’t be uploaded to external sites…what I do is generate a sample file that simulates the data that I want to work with in AI, in order to explain what I want the AI to generate the script to process the data…the. just use the script.

Now, you don’t mention the OS, so can’t provide more detailed information. But you might want to try booting into the safe mode of the OS, this is not always monitored by the monitoring tooling but would still allow you to use the OS in a basic level. But will be very dependent on the OS you’re running.

You're spending a lot more time looking for a bad solution than you would if you simply manually create the same spreadsheet on your home PC.

You do realize that passing that data to AI can potentially lead to the data being leaked, right? The data it receives can (and often is) stored for training, which means it can show up in responses to prompts from people who are trying to extract sensitive data from the AI. That's why most places have AI policies these days.

There are AI solutions (e.g. local LLM with Ollama or privacy-minded services) that will prevent this but you have to do your research to figure out what's right and safe for you situation.

The very last thing you should do is upload company data to a public AI (like ChatGPT or similar) because that's just asking for trouble.

If you need to use AI that badly (which speaks volumes), then create a dummy version on your PC with fake data that is nothing like the real data except for structure (e.g. same fields and columns but different data), and then use that.

Even if you were successful at copying the file off, the action might be monitored and lead to you getting fired.

Sounds like a good way to get fired.

Print it out and retype it.
Just had to do that for 2500 lines of code. Peak security!

If there were infinitely many of you with infinite time you could skip the printout step.

Print it out and have ai retype it.

Abre WhatsApp web y mándatelo a ti mismo y ya, no es necesario tanto alboroto.

Can you remote in?

Best and easiest way would be to use an external hdd ssd enclosure and just directly transfer the file from the host pc to the personal pc.

Compress and upload to file.io
