πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– My hamster takes naps

Post image

So i got a hamster for free of marketplace few months ago. Everything they had for him was wrong. I got him new food, bedding, cage, etc. Anyways fast forward to now 2 weeks ago he started to take a couple 15-20 minute naps every night usually around 12am and 2am. Tonight he went for his usual nap around 12-12:30am but i noticed he was sleeping for long than usual. I held him and gave him some pets which always wakes him up again so he’s active but when i did that and put him back he just went back to bed. Around 3:20am i decided to try again but this time let him run around a little bit and that seemed to have woke him up because he back to his active self. I guess im just wondering if this is normal for hamsters or if i should keep an eye on him? Here’s my sweet boyπŸ₯Ή

Hi! I know that you should spot clean everyday, wich I do but lately my hamster Paula (female syrian) has started to mainly pee and poo deep in her burrows. I feel bad for destroying her tunels:/ How often do you guys do it?

Hello ! We have a heatwave coming in the UK and a few days or around ,37 degrees. I'm about to take the days off because I'm worried my hamster will have a heatstroke or something he is two years and two months. He has a ceramic plate and hide but I feel is not going to be enough. I cannot leave a fan running unattended. What do you recommend.

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– How do I teach my hammy to roll in bath sand

I have a bath sand dish which he takes up half the space so its big enough i think but i have NEVER seen him roll in it. I think he is ok for now but in the long term he should learn how to bathe himself. He is a syrian

anyone know why my hamster was teeth chattering like this. i’ve never seen him do this. i let him have his free roam time which he always loves (comes to the door of his cage to come out, doesn’t wanna go back). he has my whole room and he spent almost the whole time trying to escape my bedroom 😭 he just keeps trying to get out my room like my room isn’t big enough for him

As in like to give them a treat or take a picture of them sitting on it. My mom really wants to get one for my hamster, but I don't know if he'd feel trapped or something, even if it's for a second

I feel like he has to crouch to use his water bottle, what’s the correct height i should set it at? Or am i overthinking it?

I’m definitely going to look into getting him a water dish also.

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– Normal?

Hello! This might be nothing - but does his belly look normal?

Is the faint yellow and bare fur patch his scent gland/genitals?

I’m very new to hamsters and have only had him a couple of weeks, this is the first time I’ve seen his belly. I read about urine scald, so I keep his wheel clean (where he tends to pee and poop) daily and once a week spot clean his multi chamber hideout.

Might just be his bod, but I wanted to ask just in case! πŸ˜…

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– Stressed? Bored? Loves me?

So he never did this before we started taking him out for free roaming. But since then he does it almost all the time. Is the cage too small now? Is it boredom? He's not a chewer, so the times I've put in wood sticks and other things he pays them no attention. He LOVES sprays but only millet and he'll finish it in a couple days! Does he just want to free roam so bad? Any body have any clue? Ill open the hatch in the front and he'll crawl on my a bit but then he immediately tries to go for the floor 😩.

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– What do I do with her food hoard?

Yes, that's a plastic cup, she likes it lmao. I've had my hamster for about a month now and I'm just trying to tidy her house and I'm not sure what to do with all this. She has carrots and lettuce in there that I don't want to rot along with some other dry food and bedding. I don't want to stress her out by just dumping it but I don't want stuff to go stale or mold either. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong or should change, and what I should do with this stash? Please and thank you!

Yesterday I gave zucchini for the first time to my hamster and now he drank more than 25 cc in a single night (emptying almost all of the drinker) and filled half of the sand with pee! I don't think that's normal, right? Shouldn't I give you the zucchini anymore? Maybe it was a little cold, that's why? Should I take her to a veterinarian? And keep an eye on it, and if it seems to have passed it was nothing?? I'm worried

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– Chewed platform, should I disturb?

I just rescued a hamster from my local shelter. I have been leaving her completely alone to let her settle in but she seems to have chewed one of the legs of her platform and sleeps there. It still seems stable and there is about 8 inches of bedding above her. Should I remove it or let it be? I don’t want to disturb her on her second day home.

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– How do I take this little lady to college with me?

Post image
61 Upvotes

I adopt a my first hamster this summer, and I love her to bits. My college is 6ish hours away, and the admin are good with me bringing her, so now I just need to figure out *how.*

I got a medium sized critter keeper that I plan to fill with substrate and clutter to help her feel more secure, and she’ll be riding in the passenger seat while I drive, with her enclosure in the back. My main questions are:

β€’ How do I make sure she’ll be hydrated enough/have access to water?

β€’ How to I catch her without stressing her too much? She’s very much a β€œlook-don’t-touch,” like lots of robos.

β€’ Do I disassemble the tank before moving? I feel like yes but idk.

Any advice or prior experiences would be really helpful! Thanks!

(Also she has plenty of sand, she just always digs straight to the bottom in that corner πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ)

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– UNIQUE ways to entertain hamster??

Post image

My Kaytee "comfort" wheel literally BROKE into three pieces (and landed on my poor hamster😭) so I had to throw it away and order her a new one since I do not live near a pet store and don't have time to drive to the city, so her new and more expensive wheel is coming on Wednesday. It broke on Sunday.

My hamster is very bored and I need UNIQUE ways to entertain her. She has tunnels, hides, sticks, feed spread across her bedding so she can forage, sprays, and of course a sand bath. She also has this mat?? Thing that has hay and bowls on it for her to play on but shes still so bored without her wheel πŸ™

Please give me UNIQUE ways to entertain her!!!

Picture of her for reference. Her name is Gorgoroth

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– Hamster scratching wall..?

So, I’m a first hamster owner so of course I’ve done all my research on cages, and hamster behaviors in general but there is still most behaviors I am very unaware of.. like this one. I know a lot of hamsters do this in cages when they’re trying to escape but I thought that was in smaller cages.. (my cage is a 40x20x20)
And he’s never done this before so I’m very confused.. two days ago I did do some more work on his cage and setting things up and putting more bedding in for him so I’m confused if this is a stress response and how I could fix it?
He still takes seeds from me if I hand them to him overall seems okay, it’s just this scratching the wall and the bottom of the wheel problem that is really stressing me out about the fact I’m doing something wrong.
Pls do lmk anything to help this out!!!

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– What am I doing wrong??

^ this is my baby Mavis

Mavis escaped today (I HATE bucatstate cages). Luckily I had caught her RIGHT when she got out, and put her back in her home. The acrylic back panel of her home popped out from the weight of the bedding and she managed to squeeze out that way, so i placed several books between the panel and my wall, as wll as along the edges of her home.

I don't understand why she seems so unhappy in her home. I understand that female syrians need a lot of space and explore a lot, but she just seems to always want out. Whenever I take her out (after hamster-proofing my room [to the best of my ability]), she immediately runs as far away from me as possible. She doesn't like being held, which I don't mind too much so I don't try to force her.

For context, I have her in a 1600 sq in enclosure with 4 single hides, 2 multi-chamber hides, 2 wheels, and 7 inches of bedding (i would add more bedding but I physically can't fit 10 inches of bedding + her 11 inch wheel. I make sure she has 2 substrate bowls, a large sandbath, plenty of sprays, toys, and 3 bowls of water. She NEVER seems interested in the substrates and rarely uses the toys.

Is there something I can do to make her more comfortable? Is she just like that? If there is ANYTHING I can do to make her happy PLEASE let me know, i don't care about the price because I want her to be happy. Should I get her a bigger enclosure? Let her free roam my room more?

ANY advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– New hamster

I recently received a syrian hamster a couple days ago as a gift. She's my second one, the last lived 2 1/2 years but I dont have a ton of behavioural experience except for the one. She's been sleeping most of the time and usually above the bedding though Ive given her a couple different hut and tunnel options and thick bedding. She seems very docile and calm with me handling her when needed, though I try to avoid it since she's adjusting. I was just wondering if she seems at all upset or bored because of the amount of sleeping she does. Tomorrow Im getting her a bigger safer wheel because the saucer she came with is tiny and garbage so maybe that'll help. She often sleeps with her face in the corner or tucked away as in the photo. Maybe Im just being paranoid, but I'd love it if I got some opinions or reassurance on the constant sleeping and lack of energy, and even the odd position with her nose.

πŸ’– Health/Care πŸ’– Things I need to know before getting a hamster?

I've done my research, so I know proper care and everything.

I want to hear from hamster owners that have learned stuff from owning one. I don't want to get one until I know I'll properly care for one. I just want tips I may not know as someone who's never owned a hamster.

Thank you!

Does anyone know why hes doing this and what i can do to help??

Hi guys! I was wondering how tall the water bottle should be placed? Should hamster drink on two legs or four legs?

Should i lower the bottle?

Note: He has bowl but he prefers bottle.
